Living Room / Re: Newly coined term, "internet fury"? A sad article...

As defined by who exactly?
-Stephen66515 (April 14, 2013, 02:24 PM)

That's about right, one person complains and the next thing you know everyone is in a frenzy. Sound familiar?   It's no secret that occasionally I drop the F bomb, but I try not to do this in the Living Room since it's an open forum.  With that being said, if there is no swearing allowed in this forum, then the filter should be set so.  If no such filtering is available, then it should be known that such post will be deleted.  Problem instantly solved.....

The government won't allow hack-backs because they're afraid you'll find confidential information they stole from the U.S.. [sarcasm on] Can't have that information in the hands of the average citizen, now can we?  [sarcasm off]

I remember when spam started becoming a problem way back when.  There were companies that hired marketing companies to place ads for them.  Little did they know that these marketing companies were spamming their ads, a few of them put apology letters on their website stating that they did not approve of their marketing company spamming.

The BEST thing to do when you receive spam is to report it so it will be shut down.  Of course the spammers have to constantly move around once they're identified and shut down, but if you do nothing they're free to keep spamming from their site.
You can report it to your ISP, usually something like "abuse@your ISP.com".  Then you can also report it by sending the entire email, including headers to "[email protected]".  There are others as well, but for the best spam reporting "How To" site with all kinds of information and apps, go to http://spam.abuse.net/userhelp/#report .

^^ Yes, people seem to be waking up to this, albeit belatedly.
For example: CISPA Amendment Proves Everyone's Fears Were Justified While Failing To Assuage Them

The government has a knack for the "small print" and how they word things that leaves the door wide open for the government spooks to do their thing, all while sharing with local law enforcement and tech companies that benefit from private information.  Most likely it's also another one of those "follow the money" bills.

No matter how you look at it, it's Orwellian.

As far as search engines, DuckDuckGo, Blekko, BlackBoxSearch and DogPile are some good ones that don't track you.   8)

Nice list. I have been using Startpage but I'm not so thrilled with their results. I'll have to try a couple of those.

I normally use DuckDuckGo.  It's fast and has absolutely NO ADS!  Blekko is really good too, and only has ONE AD, and it's at the bottom of the page.  lol

I've been using RTPO (Ready To Print Organizer) since 1998 and have never had an issue.  It only cost $19.95, and doesn't have any crapware, at least the last time I downloaded it.  lol  It really has a lot of bells and whistles for such a small program.  It loads up in a blink of the eye and switches screens just as fast....

I took offence to something? News to me...When the hell do I take offence to ANYTHING  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Tinman, I know you didn't aim it specifically at me :)

-Stephen66515 (April 11, 2013, 09:50 PM)
Another bad joke:
Do you really have to aim specifically with a 12-gauge?  :P

Well every now and then I use other things.  Just today I eradicated a baby-factory tree rat (female red squirrel) with a .22 Long rifle at approx 120 yards away from my house.  They like to chew up insulation from under the house and wiring from under the hoods of cars, so I keep them in check every year about this time....

April, I understood how you thought I might have taken that comment as something aimed directly at me

Mouser...Shut up.

lol!  Hell, even I was wondering what was going on.  Not to worry, I've been accused of worse.   :o

« Last post by Tinman57 on April 12, 2013, 07:29 PM »

So the lesson here is, don't use Bing and don't use GoOgle.  I have software and secure DNS servers that has prevented me from going to infected websites on several occasions, and I'm talking about some well known websites.  Once I was blocked from going to an infected page on PcWorld, and a few days later PcWorld announced that some of their pages were hacked with malware.  Nowwhodathunkit?   ;D

No... the proper response is to ban cell phones from airplanes, of course!  :-\

From what I understand, it can be done while safely on the ground to an aircraft flying close by, so outlawing phones on the aircraft won't make any difference.  Wait! Ohhhhhh!  I get it!  lol.

Living Room / Internet Freedom Bill
« Last post by Tinman57 on April 12, 2013, 07:10 PM »

Personally, I think by the time both sides are done hacking this bill, it won't be worth the paper it's printed on and be full of loopholes the government can conveniently abuse....

Congressional panel approves Internet freedom bill
A U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee has voted to approve a bill that would make it official U.S. policy to promote an Internet "free from government control," with promises that the Republican majority would work with critics of the bill's wording.
http://www.pcworld.c...et-freedom-bill.html

Critics question wording of Internet freedom bill
Legislation that would make it official U.S. policy to promote a global Internet “free from government control” could restrict the U.S. Federal Communications Commission from using its authority and prevent law enforcement agencies from taking action against cybercriminals, some critics have said.

Am I the only one that can't find any hint of Stephen being offended by the term "tard" in this post, as claimed by Tinman, here, and has no clue why he told Stephen to "get over it"?

He wasn't telling stephen to get over the term... he was pre-emptively telling anyone that complained about it to do so.  Seemed pretty straightforward to me.

Thanks Wraith, I thought it was pretty straight forward myself...  ;D

Really hard to believe that the aircraft manufacturers let this one go like that.  Perhaps the FAA will come down on them and make them fix these vulnerabilities.  They should have thought of this before they even installed the equipment in an aircraft, it's not like it's a big secret that hackers try to get into anything.  And for terrorist hackers, this would be the golden ticket, destroying an aircraft without having to take their own life.

Seriously though...are we playing the "Who is offended by what" card, in a thread marked as NSFW/Adult Content?

If ya don't like it...don't look at it...

Don't make me get the fucking hose out people.

I'm still waiting on the "Crystal Drives" they've been working on.  Like a thumb drive but it has memory crystals that is supposed to hold a huge amount of data all while doing it quite swiftly.  But they will probably wait until they've milked today's technology for all it's worth before it becomes available.
I read about these crystal memory chips a couple years back, I think it was IBM that was exploring the technology, but I'm not positive.

Good tip.
Doesn't always work, but it appears to on this giveaway.
On weekends GAOTD has a free game too (see link in upper-right).  Sometimes the tip works on the games as well.

RE this particular giveaway....  I'm not sure I'd call it an "editor."  Many so called editors don't actually *change* the pdf in any way...  They just add to it.  Even the eraser function doesn't change the pdf--it just paints virtual whiteout over parts of the document.

So your saying that's what this particular editor does (or doesn't do) as well?

Congress Wants to Make CFAA Penalities Worse -- We Need to Stop Them
Last week, Congress put forth a bill that would dangerously expand computer crime law to double or even triple the penalties prosecutors could use to threaten computer users -- people like digital rights activist Aaron Swartz. We've got to stop them and tell them this law needs real reform to protect visionary, talented, justice-driven individuals like Aaron. We're pulling out all the stops this week, and we need your help. We need the Internet to speak out with a voice so loud legislators have no choice but to listen.

Here's the game plan:

We have built a Twitter tool  https://cfaa.eff.org/ that helps you to tweet at legislators. Staffers count these messages, so please tweet lots.
Call the House Judiciary Committee. We've collected their numbers and prepared an easy-to-follow script https://www.eff.org/...eform-and-aarons-law for the phone call. If you've never called your legislators before, today is the day to start.
Change your Twitter icon to reflect that you're taking part in this cause. We've created an image https://www.eff.org/...n-demanding-congress that can help spread the word.
Finally, if you haven't yet, please take our action alert https://eff.org/aarons-law to e-mail Congress about the specific changes we'd like to see in a reformed CFAA.
Congress can't get this right unless they hear from you. Please join us in taking action today.

If you have to go through all that, then it ain't free!  And what do they do with all this new email information they get from you?  Sell to a spamming marketer?  Add you to some UCE email list?
The way I look at it, if it's free, you shouldn't have to give them your details just to use it.

Well....I'm no financial genius or stock market expert, but I think I'll just keep my cash in a money market account, even if the interest rates are for crap.  Thanks once again Uncle Sam.   >:(

But I do know that I just popped open a bottle of Samual Adams Alpine Springs Ale, and it's just soooooo good it very well may lead to another.  If nothing else it will at least make me forget all about this head cold I have and the for-crap finances the U.S. is sweltering under.  But then again, this isn't the forum for that.....   :beerchug:
