Asus Padfone: (phone+tablet)

http://www.engadget....s-announced-padfone/

That looks decently interesting and similar to the one from AT&T.  But more interesting is the attractive woman with stickers directly on her artfully exposed flesh (?)

The pictures indicate that the tablet can be used independently from the phone. So what does putting the phone into the tablet give you?

A larger interface and more real-estate, I'd guess.  Sort of like the Motorola ATRIX, the first that had me looking at possibly ditching my iPhone.  In my dream world, you'd have one device and several bodies for it, to let you always carry the guts of the device with you, and consume it in multiple ways.

I thought that's what the cloud is for ;)

A tattoo instead of a sticker would show real dedication!

… the 10.1 is not available (at least not in Europe).
Should be available in the UK pretty soon, so it's getting closer.  ;)
In Holland, Vodafone has the 10.1v (branded for Vodafone, but the 'fat' 10.9 mm version) available (isn't that available in all the Vodafone countries?), but the new (and thinner, 8.6 mm) 10.1 will only be available somewhere around August/September, AFAIR.
Big disadvantage of the 10.1 is it has a mere 3 mpx camera, opposed to the 10.1v 8 mpx camera. That is going to save you some storage, but cost you image quality I presume.

Same in Switzerland. Current estimation for the 32 and 64 GB Models is end of August. But in what quantities?

Concerning the camera: In a tablet I'll go with an inferior camera in favour of a thinner and lighter device.

I'm actually holding out for HP's webOS and TouchPad.

Primarily because of what they're doing to make life as easy and profitable as possible for developers. They have understandable and sane developer's licensing, good software tools, support for OpenSource partnering, and a very fair (70% to developer) revenue sharing schedule. Details here.

Best of all, just about anybody who wants in can do so easily - and for free. Compare that to what you need to go through (and put up with) to be an iOS developer.

I guess that's the only way to ever have a chance of motivating enough developers to develop for the platform. Without apps, the platform will have a tough job no matter how good webOS and its 'native' applications are.

You know how it goes. The first 3 each shop gets go to the first of the 59 pre-orders. The next shipment with the next 10 is then due one month later. The first deliveries will also be the 16 GB ones only. Then, after another 6 months, when the 32 GB ones get available, the far superior successor has already been announced for 3 months and delivery is *imminent*. Damn, I'm so sick of it. >:(

How many years since the original iPad was launched? And still there is no tablet available comparable in form factor, weight, performance and price running Android :(

Huh? The first 3 Android tablets in that article are comparable to iPad 1/2. . .

The Transformer and the Xoom are heavier, the 10.1 is not available (at least not in Europe).

(so, well, yeah, ok, they are comparable ;) )

It seems you guys don't consider email to be a cloud service?

You can, after all, access it from anywhere. Your data is primarily stored on a server you don't have under your control. Actually, today, it is still surprisingly hard to have your email data stored (that is just a claim, for I don't really know) and communicated in an encrypted form.

@40hz You're welcome

There aren't that many that are in very active development, part of the market has been taken away by online, sync with smart phone type services.

And with good reason I think. The storage of personally-relevant information looks like a prime candidate for such a service. Something which you want to have always available, no matter where you are, and fast, without first having to go to a PC, boot it, start and application, etc.

I just tried verification via audio, because I couldn't read the words MS asked me to enter on their web site. The instructions were: please type every word you hear. don't worry if you don't understand some words. just enter your best guess. Guess what: I did not understand a single word!

Attached is the respective audio file so you can give it a try ;)

The main annoying thing about increasing FF version numbers is the plugin compatibility problem.

I don't know about any general Boost book other than "Beyond the C++ Standard Library" which Eóin already mentioned. There are some about specific libraries, like "The Boost Graph Library".

Beyond the C++ Standard Library is a very good book. I wouldn't even consider it to be much out of date. It does cover only a selection of libraries though. It's more like an overview to make yourself familiar with some of the more often used libraries. To learn about specific libraries, I think the online documentation does an excellent job.

Didn't know about "The Boost C++ Libraries", so thanks for point that out.

Lately I'm noticing the displayed time being sooner later than what seems correct -- and it seems to get worse over time.

Installed ClockSync (root required) and am hoping for an improvement.

Has anyone else had similar problems?

Not me. I think my phone synchs it's time with a reference supplied via the phone network. Under Settings - Date & Time, there's an option 'Automatic' which I have ticked.

One of the things that I wonder is, how is DRM different from traditional software licensing? They're so similar... A lock via DRM vs a lock via a license/key/whatever. I can see some differences, but in other ways, they are so similar...

What is relevant to my concern is that while I can install some piece of PC-SW I have 'licensed' on a PC of any vendor, I can read the ebooks I have bought (or licensed, or whatever) only on a kindle ebook reader device (if I want to read them on an ebook reader instead of a phone or PC).

...

Anyway, I will be looking at MyLifeOrganized due to the new Android app and liking the way it approaches things. Unfortunately like so many things, properly getting an organized approach to life working in your own life takes *time* that most of us don't have. I will be trying to take a few *days* to get my life into MLO and then see if it can successfully keep me on track for a couple weeks thereafter. I'll try to report on my experience.

Yes, please do that.

I'm less concerned about DRM that doesn't let me print or lend or copy my books (although that sucks too), but I find the fact the when I buy a book for my kindle, I'll never be able (without hacks) to read it on a different e-reader (should I decide to buy one) rather annoying.

You can read it on other devices, as long as that device supports the Kindle Software.  Still limiting, but not as much as that statement makes it seem...

Agreed. I was specifically thinking about ebook-readers though.

General Software Discussion / Re: Sticking to TODO software
« Last post by phitsc on July 05, 2011, 03:31 PM »
I was thinking about Todo programs and why I can never really stick to them - I have tried nearly everything from ActionLists for iPhone (great software) to writing my own JustToDoIt but I cannot get it to become part of my daily workflow.

Yeah, it's weird, isn't it. I'm in the same boat really. Eventually, I always end up using pen and paper for todos. Terrible organizability, unusable searchability, painful adding and editing, I can probably type faster than I write. Nevertheless, I naturally seem to prefer pen and paper. Maybe it's because I always have a piece of paper or a small notebook and a pen in front of me, typically between me and the keyboard, or right beside it. That makes it easy to take notes / add todos without interrupting what is on the screen. I keep trying new electronic todo solutions, but it just never works out.

I'd maybe buy the argument that I've only licensed (instead of bought) the book, and therefore can only read it on kindle, if it was substantially cheaper than buying a real-paper one. But, at least in Europe, that doesn't seem to be the case.
