General Software Discussion / Re: a programs last used date in xp

I am not sure.  I was thinking about something that would scan the system and then report it

General Software Discussion / a programs last used date in xp
« Last post by techidave on November 13, 2010, 04:40 PM »
Not sure if this is doable or not.  But is there a way to find the last used date of installed software on my xp machine?

the default add/remove progrmas in XP doesn't give you this information.  I doubt that the info is accurate anyway.  I have also looked at Revo Uninstaller but it gives installation date but not last used.

it sounds like this may not be possible in XP like it is in Vista/7.

anyone have an idea?

The problem with copying that file to the local machine is when I sync my laptop with the network at school, that file won't get copied over automatically.

Is it possible for some program or coding snack to override the network polices and pin a file to the start menu from my docs?

Ok here is the low down on my network.

A school network with Windows 2003 Server, Active Directory, and yes we are redirecting my documents to the server.  All machines are running XP Pro SP 3.  While most machines are also redirecting the desktop, mine is not.  Which further complicated things.

Because early on, I did move and also created a shortcut from my documents to the desktop but was unsuccessful in pinning it to the start menu.  So I thought, must not be the folder redirection that is causing the problem.

I also was running on my desktop with 3 monitors,  Monitor switch and z bar and since they do some flaky stuff once in a while... maybe.  NOT!

All the time though I could pin an executable file but it was in C:\downloads and not my documents.

Now my laptop is also joined to our domain and has the same polices, etc., on it as my work desktop does.  But it is usually at home.  But trying it in the relaxed atmosphere of my house allowed me to think about it more.  I also tried gdv suggestion with the ctrl+shft+rightclick on some other files and was able to see the pin to start menu option.  So that helped in the troubleshooting also.

I was just trying to pin a excel spreadsheet to the start menu...a xls format.

I was hoping like Deozaan in reply #11 for a simple program to:
Something that would be useful is something that adds to the context Menu

Send To -> Start Menu (create Shortcut) would be awesome in XP.

I did try each and every suggestion as it was explained.  I had already tried April's suggestion about using Explorer and actually tried it again in case I missed a step.

Thanks to all for the help!

Yes it is and on the laptop too.  I wondered if that was it or not.

Tried it on my work computer and it works!     But I wonder why it doesn't work from my documents?  oh well.

thanks for all the suggestions in helping me figure this out!

Yeah, it works! (on my laptop)  Ended up copying the file to the root of the C drive.  Then the pin to start menu and drag and dropped worked.  I tried to pin a shortcut but that didn't work which would be nice  but ...

I think someone suggested copying it to the c drive.  Now I will try it tomorrow at work.

Ctrl-RightButtonDrag to start button, and then up to desired position, then release works in the XP start menu non-classic mode.
In classic mode you get the option to create a shortcut when the rmbutton is released.

Nope, that doesn't work either.  Have also tried it with different key combinations like ctrl, shift, alt and that didn't work either.

Also uninstalled anything dealing with mulltiple monitors and taskbars but to no avail.

Sorry my bad again.  I have the default start menu as shown in Joker's image above and not the classic one.  I was confused yesterday.

I did try the Ctrl+Shift+Right-Click as mentioned by gdv22 but there was no pin to showing up.  But it does work with a .exe file.

i will uninstall my multiple monitors/ taskbars software and see what that does.

First of all, I do have the classic menu as shown in Joker's post.  I have tried using just explorer and not just the drag and drop on to the start menu.  I have tried a shortcut and also the actual 40 kb xls file.   sorry I really thought that I had said it was an excel file in the original post but after re-reading I see that i didn't.  My bad!

Since this is on my work computer, i will try uninstalling and not just disabling the multi monitor and taskbar software to see what happens (tomorrow).

Oops, I found them when I goto Start>all programs> and at the very top just under windows update.  But I would like them on the start menu without going this deep.

just on a hunch i have disabled all my multi monitor software but without success.

I just tried disabling it and re-enabling it but that didn't work either.

Maybe I am just going to have to live without it.   :(

You know, I just happened to think  :-[  Maybe it is because I have mulitple monitors and some software like Z-Bar and Monitor Switch installed?

Also in XP I believe you could make a shortcut to the document on the desktop.  Drag that to the Quick Launch Bar.  Then delete the desktop shortcut.  One click on the Quick Launch icon would bring it up.

Tried that Miles as that was one of the suggestions from Google.  It didn't work either.

Right clikc and pin to start menu is not an option for me.  It wasn't in my recently used list but it is now and still doesn't show up.  I have tried to drag it to the start menu and it doesn't work either even if it is a shortcut.

What i found on google were the same suggestions that you have given.  I know I have done this before and I think I just dragged it there but doesn't work now.

I have been trying various ways to pin or place a document or even the shortcut to the document on my start menu.  this is one that I use almost every day and looking for a way.  I have googled, search these forums to no avail.

Is it possible to do this in XP?  Maybe with a coding snack?

I take that back, it looks like Karen Kenworthy's Net Monitor can do just what you want.

That sounds like a wonderful app to have.  I have seen software that will ping a certain intervals but it didn't log anything other than what you might see on screen at that moment.

I will have to give the networx a whirl and see what happens.

So if I was understanding you correctly, then 10 users each streaming at 128 kilobits per second would then take up 1 meg per second??

499
I wasn't really looking for something like that Andy but that is good all the same.  I was trying to figure out if a radio station was streaming at 128 kbps, then is there a way to figure that is going to use say... 2mb of my pipe?  That is for just one user on my network.

sorry that I wasn't very clear.   :-[

Some of my users and i are having a discussion about whether or not listening to online radio stations take up of our available internet pipe?

our pipe at school is a 6m ASDL line.  It is 6mb up and down if that makes a difference.  So if I have one user listening to a radio station, how do I determine how much of that 6mb they are using?  The same would hold true of video, youtube videos, etc.

I have been doing a google search but am having problems coming up with something in clear and simple language.  Also, we are not sending any streams, just receiving them.

I maintain that streaming anything actually opens up multiple connections to the internet and that is what uses up the pipe.  If so, then how do you figure out how many connections you have open?

Most of the articles i can find on the web are to techincal for my brain,  :'( so I figured someone here can translate this for me!

thanks
