Can someone please help me find a good free spam filter for Outlook 2007?  I'd really appreciate it.  Thanks.
4727
Thanks Jim, that was informative.  To be honest, the reason I asked in the first place was due to the way The Bat handles signatures.  I've already started another thread about that.  i've gone thread crazy today!

I have so many questions about the use of templates in The Bat!  I'd really appreciate if someone here can help me figure it all out.

I know The Bat has their own forums and mailing list, but frankly, they are not that helpful.  It's not that there isn't a lot of information there, I'm sure it's all there, but finding it is so hard.  And I personally prefer the help of the people here instead because you always tend to be very clear and informative.  Thanks!

Questions:
How can i create Common templates to be shared across accounts?  I see checkboxes and sections for it in the program, but they don't work the way i'm assuming they work, so i must be misunderstanding something.

How to create signatures?
4729
Yeah, i suppose you're right.  The formatting is controlled in so many ways now, you can't just have one standard for it.
4730
Before the days of email clients and webmail with beautiful interfaces and intelligent features, people were a lot more anal about how to compose, write, and reply to emails.  Since the pretty formatting that we are used to now were not there yet, it was only text, and it had to be done right to not become a nuisance.

So, my question is, today, when I reply to emails, what is the proper way to do so?

Back in the day, it was common "netiquette" to quote the material you were replying to first and then the response below.  You were also supposed to only quote what was necessary and not the whole thing if it was not relevant.  if you were responding to multiple items, then you would do so in multiple blocks of quote--response, quote--response, etc...

So, should we still abide by this?  I ask because programs now (like Outlook) have their own way of keeping track of threads and such.

Lately, i broke away from this and I just write my reply, and all the quoted material appears below my response.  It's just easier.

?????!  I don't see the correlation at all. Poweruser programs use usenet and mailing lists?   ;D ;D ;D   I think not! Has nothing to do with whether a program is for, (Ahem!) "powerusers". To me it just indiciates that the developer of the program has probably been around computers for a long time and is accustomed to/more familiar and comfortable with such media.

Jim
Yeah, I know...I've used all the different kinds of support methods over the years like mailing lists, forums, simple emails to the author.  The best BY FAR is an active forum as far as quickly finding information and resolving issues.  And for that matter, this DC forum is the best as far as interface and searching options and organization.  But I also know mouser has put in a lot of custom tweaks and effort to make it that way.

Mailing lists are a pain in the butt.  Sure, there's a lot of information in there, but it's hard to find something when you need it.  And because of that, it forces you to read a whole bunch of stuff you don't really care about.  Remember the days (about 10 years ago)?  I was on several mailing lists and it was just ridiculous.  I was in college and didn't have as many responsibilities so i had the tiime, but man, I had to read so much garbage every day.  No, forums are definitely the way to go.

But Jim, seriously, the Bat as a program is excellent.  I don't know what client I would use if it did not exist.  I used to use pegasus for years which is still pretty good.  but DC made me change.

Best E-mail Client / Re: Seriously, what is MicroEd good for?

i also hate the free cursor positioning -- but it's an OPTION in microed, you can choose to disable that.
Whoa!  I never caught this.  Can you use MicroEd WITHOUT the free caret?  I never saw that option.  I always switched the editor to "Plain Windows".  Where is this option?

Forget it...I found it.  Cool!
4733
That's totally ridiculous if they banned you from the forum.. maybe you just triggered something that prevents one user from posting too many posts on the day they sign up, to prevent spammers?
That shouldn't be the case, since I signed up two years ago.  But maybe I posted twice in a few minutes and that triggered it.  But that still leaves me to wonder why no one responded.

On a related note, I was able to access their newsgroup/mailing list and it is VERY active.  Seems like all the important discussions happen in there.  A bit antiquated in my opinion, but it is a poweruser email program so i can understand why they gravitate towards using mailing lists and newsgroups.
4734
Yeah, no warning or anything!  It wouldn't prevent me from buying the program, it's just annoying.  I like great software too much to not get it just to make a point.  At the end of the day, it's a good program.  But many people take into account these things before buying a program, so if I were them, I'd relax a little.
4735
Wow - posted the above and then noted your latest post about being banned from the Bat! forums - how do you know/what makes you think you've been banned? The two posts you linked to are very innocuous
I've been banned because now I can't create a new thread, reply to any threads, or even modify my own threads...with a message in red saying I don't have enough permission to do so.  I've been banned.

Then i saw their forum "rules":
http://www.ritlabs.c...p?FID=4&TID=6975

Which are really stupid rules to have for a support forum.  Don't talk about bugs?!  That's just a dumb rule.

As far as Dopus, yes, it is rather intimidating.  But with them, at least they have a really nice forum where you can find answers relatively quickly.
4736
Unbelievable...I think I was banned from the Bat forum!  All I did was start these threads:
http://www.ritlabs.c...p?FID=4&TID=7223
http://www.ritlabs.c...p?FID=4&TID=7222

I don't think I've ever been banned before from a forum!  Either I did something terribly wrong, or they are terribly sensitive to something i have no idea about.  Now I know why there is no good documentation in their forums...you're not allowed to ask anything.
4737
Do you mean you see TB!'s forum online, as per DC?  I take it as a mailing list.  My main problem with it is the sheer volume: not surprising, I suppose, for a program of TB!'s power and complexity.
Yeah, I was talking about their online forum.  I didn't know they had a mailing list.  I hate mailing lists.  but they also have the option to read it through a newsreader.
I'm trying to setup the gmane server in my newsreader, but it's not working.  Can someone walk me through this?
4738
I love the Bat as a client, I really do.  But it has terrible documentation for the most part, and a pretty unhelpful forum.

First of all, I think most people know that the help manual that comes with the program is just ok at best.  Yeah, most everything is in there, but for being such a poweruser program, it needs more details on all the options.  Every word that is defined in the program or options should be explained somewhere.

The forums.  Again, they're ok, but not good enough for a program of this complexity.  Mouser has done an unbelievable job with this forum, and I feel it's hands-down the best forum interface I've ever used.  The bat is mediocre.  Whatever.

Also, it seems to me that The Bat is quite slow in fixing little bugs or adding features.  I gladly paid for the recent upgrade, but didn't find it different at all.  Maybe it's all behind the scenes stuff (yes I know i can read the history).  Still, it's an awesome program.  I'm just saying, most poweruser programs like this have either very active forums with a lot of helpful people, and/or a manual that is very detailed and complete.

Wow, Steven.  I nominate you for poster of the month!  That is good info there.  Thanks.

By the way, you can get yahoo pop/forward access for free with this secret workaround.  Pretty cool!
4741
That's cool...now I can add my parents without worrying.
4742
Thanks Steven.  I'm curious about the comparisons also.  WinPatrol seems like a solid piece of software.  I've never used a startup manager except for a short time a couple of years ago, and I never really understood why I needed one.  To me, as long as I have a pretty fast computer, I don't need the manager.  But I don't know, I haven't thought about it too much.

Hmm...I like the idea Deozaan.  But it seems like a lot of work.  I don't know.  I already have like 5 accounts for various things.  I'm fine with using one permanently for spam stuff as long as it is all coming into my client.  Let me think about all this.  I've already been tweaking my file/folder organization methods because of mouser, and it's taking a long time for me to setup and get used to.  i don't know if i can handle changing the way I do email right now.  Too much!!

erm...forgive my ignorance, but how do I get my own email server?  It sounds expensive.  If you point me in the right direction, I'll give it a go.

General Software Discussion / Moving from yahoo mail to gmail
« Last post by superboyac on March 10, 2009, 12:43 PM »
I, as many of you, have several email addresses.  I have one yahoo address that I've used for ages simply for spam and for all those signup things you run into constantly on the internet.  I would like to move this to a gmail account as painlessly as possible.  If any of you have interesting recommendations for this, let me know.  Of course, the reason for this is because gmail is so much better than yahoo (duh) and it allows for POP access so I can use my client to check it.
Here are my thoughts so far:

--I realize I will have to change one by one all the registered sites where I've used the yahoo address.  That is the most painful part.  Or I can pay yahoo to use mail forwarding, but that defeats the purpose because if I wanted to pay them, I could just use their pop access anyway.

--I ran across a blog somewhere that suggested I buy a forwarding address so nothing like this happens again.  So let's say I buy [email protected] as a forward for any free service I use whether it's yahoo or gmail, then I never have to worry again about this stuff.  That's fine, but I don't want to pay for a spam address.  And, I know it's not 100%, but I'm not that worried about google stopping their free service.  If they do, many, many people will be pissed.  Besides, I already use a paid service for my important account.

So that's what I'm thinking.  Advice anyone?

You know, it must have been a fluke thing because it never happened again.  Everything is working perfectly.

Just released Linkman 7.60 (Freeware and Shareware versions available).
-Outertech Support (November 10, 2008, 01:09 AM)

Another PowerMarks user here; been using it for years...

I am just trying Linkman (pro 7.7.1.15) and though it is really pretty great I'd like to offer a couple of suggestions to the developer regarding the query search:

1) Linkman's defaulting to a substring search is very inefficient. When I type in at (say for "attorney" or "atlas" or "athlon", etc.) I don't also want "battery", "rattle", "collimator", "estate", "matthey", and every other keyword that has at somewhere in the string. That just means I will have to type in additional keywords to narrow the search, or else backspace and re-enter my search term as a literal string with quote marks. On the rare occasion that I do want to perform a substring search I would be very happy to add wildcard asterisks to the query: *at*; but this should not be the default search pattern.

Here is a practical example: A search query of at b narrows my 2,000+ bookmarks to just four using PowerMarks. Linkman yields nearly 300 bookmarks for the same query, requiring additional typing or literal string quoting. at bo narrows to 2 for Powermarks, but there still remain 54 for Linkman... too many to glance through. Linkman consistently requires a lot more typing to narrow a search, due to the default substring interpretation of queries.

2) I also don't care for autocompletion when I'm typing in a search query. More often than not I end up having to delete the autocompleted part. I think people who are good typists generally find autocompletion to be annoying. For those who do like it perhaps it could be made an option.

I hope these suggestions are useful. I'll keep an eye on Linkman but in the meantime, still using PowerMarks...
Drew, I agree with #2.  I'd like an option to turn off autocompletion.
I disagree with #1, but to satisfy both sides, again, maybe an option to toggle one or the other.

Nice!  My custom line says "Aram's bitchin' Menu".
As for the toolbar docking options they work decent enough, i suppose.  i don't really use them, so someone else will have to comment.  I use the system tray toolbar + hotkey mouse-popup toolbar, which is perfection for me.

Actually, this latest beta has backtracked somewhat in the visual stability of the docking window when accessed from the system tray.  it was perfect before, but now when the menu pops up and there's another window in the way, it kind of flickers back and forth from behind the window/front of window randomly.  It worked better before.

I've found a couple of macros online that can help this problem.  I'm experimenting with them to see if it really works.  I would kill for the opportunity to use The Bat at work.

I f---ing hate this sorting on Outlook 2007 for contacts and addresses.  It's insane.  I've set everything I could possibly find to sort by first name, and when I go to type in a name in the email, it doesn't return any results unless I type the last name.  I even copied our Exchange global address book into my own contacts, so that I can control how it sorts, because our administration has decided last name is the way that's better (even though no one agrees).  I'm going to post a bunch of screenshots below and maybe someone can help me with what's happening:

First, since I can't f-ing sort the network global address list, I copied all the freaking address to my own local contacts folder and called it "gal-copy", see below:
Screenshot_20090305-165707.png  Screenshot_20090305-165934.png

Next, I made sure all the available options for sorting in the program were set to first/last (not last/first).  What the f-ck these options do is beyond me because they don't quite work right:
Screenshot_20090305-170732.png

Then, I changed the autocomplete option so that it checks my local addresses first and then goes to the network GAL.  At least that's what I think this option does.  I'll be f-cked if that works decently either:
Screenshot_20090305-165608.png

So, everything should be setup correctly, right?  Sure, but nothing works right.  Let's give it a shot.  My coworker's name is "Crystal Lee".  So, I send her an email:
Screenshot_20090305-172339.png
First of all the name appears Last, First even though I just did all the stuff above.  That's because when the name was made, even though there are separate fields for "First Name" and "Last Name", there are also motherf---ing fields for "File as" and "Full Name".  See how "FUll Name" shows last name first?  You can't change that unless you manually go into each name and change the order.  Very lame.  You'd think with all these options, you'd be able to tweak the display and sorting to your heart's content, but no, that's not true at all.  And with all the options, it seems to be obsessed with the "full name" field and uses it for everything, despite all my settings:
Screenshot_20090305-172734.png

Well, now that I've sent that email, any subsequent email to her should autocomplete after the first couple of letters.  Let's try it.  I type the first couple of letters, and NOTHING!
Screenshot_20090305-173304.png

Of course, if you use the last name, it works fine:
Screenshot_20090305-173606.png

As you can tell, the contacts/addressbook system in Outlook is nonsense.  Coupled with the fact that our admin decided to change the sorting order results in a useless autocomplete feature.  Imagine if you didn't have autocomplete anymore, so lame.  It's like going backwards in time 15 years.  If any of you can find a solution for this, please, please tell me.
