Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: AcroLiminator 1.0
« Last post by Darwin on September 03, 2007, 06:59 PM »
Hey Curt - just FYI I was going to post about the discount here, so that Wales could take advantage of it. When I went to paste in the shortcut to the offer, I realised that it includes your e-mail address and other identifying info about you (you might therefore want to edit it out).

Cool, Curt! Hadn't noticed this offer coming around again. This is the exact same software as the $69.99 SoftMaker Office 2006 and is well worth the money!

Living Room / Re: New Nick for Darwin
« Last post by Darwin on September 03, 2007, 06:35 PM »
Aaugh! I just edited my last post to add Crusader to it! We'll see if anything can top it. I would just respectfully remind you that a nick has to be one word (and of course has a 9 char limit on Efnet).

Dang! That's no fun... I'll have to stick with "Crusader" then, and forget my dreams of internet notoriety as "The Corpulent Curmudgeon" (as both Curmudgeon and FatBastard are ten letters!).

Wow! This is a great thread. Particularly for those of us with dependants. I'll be working through the suggestions and will get some of this implemented so that if anything happens to me, my wife isn't left beating her head against the wall because she doesn't know the password to access our credit card online, when the house insurance is due, etc. Thanks johnfdelcua and laughinlizard

I think that "Caped Crusader" has a nice ring to it...

Thanks, Ken - that made me laugh  :-*

Living Room / Re: Mac OS X Leopard - All show and no go, or is it worth a try?

Dual booting would be my personal preference, but if I could make it a vitrual machine, that would be even better.

If Apple has a problem with me doing so I have no problem with simply sticking with Windows :)

Yeah, no doubt! There were a couple of hacks last fall that let you dual-boot a PC, and a few VM solutions, and then of course there is PearPC (which doesn't look to be actively developed anymore). Too bad as at one point I had high hopes for it...

General Software Discussion / Re: GemX - missing in action
« Last post by Darwin on September 03, 2007, 06:02 PM »
Thanks for posting your story, Josh. Just to add to it (or really to add neglected details from my own post) I first e-mailed them about their forums being down around the 17th of August. I followed this up, after a week without a response, with a D.S.M. To them on 24th August. Both these messages remain unanswered. They have a really vibrant, and loyal, user base who are very active on the forums. I wish I knew of a way to communicate with them. Hopefully there are more active DC'ers who are also members of the GemX forum and will see this thread.

Interresting. Never thought about the connection between Gollum and Golem.

Smarty-pants. OK, I give. I apologize for being so wretchedly off-topic! (Incidentally, I wasn't drawing a connection between the two, rather as Josh notes, I can't type/spell!).

With that out of the way, I too am curious about the possibility of alt-tab functionality being added to FARR - perhaps as a plug-in? Armando - it's a nice idea, maybe you should post it on the FARR board as well?

Or... you can lead a horticulture but you can't make her think?

That's only true of the common-whore-garden variety.

General Software Discussion / GemX - missing in action
« Last post by Darwin on September 03, 2007, 05:47 PM »
GemX prides itself on its customer support - claiming that it's "probably the support service in the industry". Since I bought my first GemX product, TexNotes Pro a year or so ago, I've generally found that they live up to the claim. Lately, however, they seemed to have dropped the ball. E-mails and D.S.M. (Direct Support Messaging) requests go unanswered and their users forum - which have been excellent for a variety of reasons (user particiaption, developer's participation, tips, etc.) - has now been down for over two weeks.

Development of their products seems to have ceased as well. For about 8 weeks prior to the forum going off-line, there was a note at the head of it advising visitors that the development team was VERY hard at work on bug fixes and updates to Do-Organizer. These have never materialized and the bugs remain. TexNotes Pro is slated for update as well but hasn't been updated since October of last year. Finally, their blog is still linked to from the GemX home page and yet it hasn't been updated in almost a year as well (last post September 17, 2006).

Worrying. Out of curiosity, how many GemX users are here?

Hi Darwin,

Congratulations for the excellent job with the newsletter. Can I pinpoint something that need to be corrected? It's only a tiny thing... nothing that scratch the beauty of the whole  :).

The problem is with the URL in the link "yearbook of supporting members". It should be "https://www.donation....php?action=yearbook". The "?" is missing after ".php".

I told you that was tiny...

Doh! Thanks for pointing it out, Muadib. And thanks for the quick correction, Josh.

One app to rule them all...

OK, Golem, I hear you...  :P

I like the FARR idea - neglected to mention that in my previous post

Thanks Josh. I still have a lot to think about (actually, with my system running just fine, I'm not overly motivated to mess with anything at the moment). As I threatened to do so earlier, I've started a new thread to discuss this hack. It can be found here.

One of the funnier oathes I've heard, was a friend of mine back in high school getting stung by a wasp in front of another friend, my dad, and I. He came out with "communist". This is an indicator of how far we've come since about 1985... which is to say, how far we've degenerated: I can't imagine a lot of teens (and this friend was actually a bit rough) bothering to modify their language in front of an adult these days...
4740
The subject line says it all. In another thread this hack is exposed as being the "secret" being sold by a software distributor for $7.50 as a downloadable, password protected pdf. I'm wondering what the pros and cons of implementing such a hack are...? I'll be researching this myself and will post back here, but don't know how soon I'll be able to do so as I've a full teaching schedule to prepare for!

Justice - your post came in as I was writing mine above - I haven't read the pdf very carefully; in fact, I plan on thoroughly researching  this hack elsewhere before I even consider using it. Might as well start another thread to solicit opinions   ;)

Good luck, Josh, I hope you get a refund. Somehow I suspect they're going to be a bit "shirty" about it, but you never know - if you make your case as you have here, they'll really have to be self-delusional not to admit that you're right.
4743
In the same vein as TaskswitchXP, there is also M$' own alt-tab replacement powertoy. I've tried both and they offer similar functionality, but as always at a greater resource cost than I am willing to pay for the functionality returned...
4744
Hi justice, I was referring to Inteillicomplete's code... but no worries!
4745
I've been through shutdown/boot (not just restart) cycle and all is wel. Admittedly, I still don't have Startup Cop set to run at startup and it has not been set to modify anything... It opens up fine, though... I like the feature set but will be uninstalling as I have never found delaying apps starting up to help and my computer is running fine the way it is!
4746
No - it doesn't! I haven't used it in any meaningful way yet (ie haven't disabled, delayed, or queued any of my apps) and have not rebooted since I installed it. As I use The Ultimate Troubleshooter and am very happy with it (replaced WinPatrol 2007 Plus a while back) I really don't have much need for it and I doubt I'll be keeping it around for long.

I am so sorry I started this thread !  Really,  I am ashamed !

Distrix claims all of their products come with a 30-days refund if one is not satisfied.  I guess that's the case here ?

Nice one! Josh - give it a try! Keep the credits, though... you deserve them for going through this with them.

R-I-P-O-F-F. I sort of feel like I've participated in a Mythbusters or Consumer Reports "sting". Now, how do we "out" these turds without getting slapped silly by a copyright lawyer?
4750
Hmm, too bad urlwolf! We'll just have to keep trying to find a solution for you. Hopefully, you'll get a taker on your recoding intellicomplete idea. Have you tried contacting the author to find out if they'd be willing to release the code, given that it's not longer actively developed/supported? I guess it's still a money maker for them thought, so the answer would probably be a curt "NO!"...
