Living Room / Re: Google Ends Privacy

Since when was it a problem for companies who provide you with multiple services to know what services they provide you with and use/consolidate that information in their efforts to provide you service? It's actually quite convenient e.g. for my bank to let me access information about all my accounts at once, including facilitating transfers from one of my accounts to another.

Do you feel the same way about Google providing you with different search results based on what they think you're looking for - or more accurately, what they think you should look at first?

Because that's what they now do.

 :)

If I have a problem with the search results I get from Google it isn't hard to use Bing or Scroogle or Yahoo! or DuckDuckGo or a slew of other search engines. In the meantime, I can enjoy the convenience of many consolidated services that integrate information I have willingly given them to make my experience better.

e.g. If I receive an e-mail about an event happening on a certain date at a certain time, then it is convenient when Google offers to add it to my calendar, since I also use Google Calendar.

Hmm... Might be a good place to install Steam and all the GiBs of games I've got.

Sounds like it's basically a networked drive (of infinite storage size) to the cloud.

I don't get it...I was just reading some Obama stuff...he's saying all the right things, but nothing is moving in that direction.  I don't know...I have a hard time trusting any of these guys, even when they're saying the right things.  How f-d up is that?

What he says and what he does are two separate things that often contradict.

I wished a friend a happy b-day on FB, and he replied that he'd totally forgotten about it. That tends to happen once you no longer love turning another year older. :D

I'm not that old (or so I keep insisting) and I've long since lost the love of turning another year older. I don't usually completely space my birthday but perhaps that's because, like your friend, someone will remind me. I'll tell you though, I've had a hard time keeping track of my age since I was 19.

I haven't put much thought into this (which should be obvious) but for sites that don't limit you, you could just do something simple like:

donationcoderisthesiteiamlogginginto

Of course, to increase security you'd want to use mixed case and symbols and numbers. That could lead to something like this:

DonationCoderIsThe$ite!AmLoggingInto2Day

Easy to remember, long, and different for every site.

But the problem is that the pattern is too easy to see, so if anyone ever gets your password for any other site they will know it for every site.

I don't see what the problem is.

If you use more than one service with Google, you want Google to pretend they don't know that you use those other Google services?

Since when was it a problem for companies who provide you with multiple services to know what services they provide you with and use/consolidate that information in their efforts to provide you service? It's actually quite convenient e.g. for my bank to let me access information about all my accounts at once, including facilitating transfers from one of my accounts to another.

But it seems you'd prefer your bank to only allow you to log into one account at a time and for each account to not know any details about any other accounts you have or even the fact that you have other accounts with the same bank at all.

Wait a minute. . .

If anybody, any time, any where, can be Anonymous, then who are Anonymous to say it's a fake? :-\

As I understand it, if someone claims to be Anonymous, they are. Therefore anybody can speak as Anonymous to announce that Anonymous are going to do something.

Did you guys hear about MegaBox yet? Perhaps the "real" reason why MegaUpload was taken down?

In December of 2011, just weeks before the takedown, Digital Music News reported on something new that the creators of Megaupload were about to unroll. Something that would rock the music industry to its core. (http://goo.gl/A7wUZ)

I present to you... MegaBox. MegaBox was going to be an alternative music store that was entirely cloud-based and offered artists a better money-making opportunity than they would get with any record label.

[...]

Not only did they plan on allowing artists to keep 90% of their earnings on songs that they sold, they wanted to pay them for songs they let users download for free.

I've got some feedback.

I was just playing with the Habanero License Manager. I filled out some various information and checked some boxes and then suddenly a prompt popped up with a message something like:

"New Version detected, do you want to save it?"

Did that mean that it detected a new version of Habanero and it's asking me if I want to update to it? I had just created the Product Secret, was it talking about a new Product Secret? I had no idea what it was talking about but I clicked yes just to be safe. Then nothing happened. Or if something happened, it appeared as though nothing happened. I now see a LicenseManager.lic in the LicenseManager folder. I'm guessing that's the file it saved to? Is that even what happened due to this dialog prompt?

I hadn't previously saved the file, so I was expecting a prompt for what to name the license file.

I played around with the Manager some more and found out the dialog prompt in the first place was talking about the Product Version I entered in. Perhaps that dialog could be made clearer by saying something like "You added a new Product Version. Would you like to save these changes?"

It's not too late to try this instead! I would actually be very interested in knowing if this works in Mono, it should do but you just never know...

I don't yet know how to import DLLs into mono projects, so this isn't something I could just quickly try. I'll probably take some time to try it out though, but not today. :)

I'm talking about videos where the preview looks like some girl about to take her top off or something, but it's actually a blurry skateboard video shot on iPhone.
Since it's only one frame, you'll never see it, but it's at the right spot for the thumbnail.

Yeah. I understood what you were talking about. I just meant that the preview image that I saw for that "Cat Fight Dog Win" video before watching it the first time was an image of a funny looking dog. The funny looking dog did not appear in the video, which I thought was strange. But it was even more strange when I posted the video here and now the preview image is (I think) of Casey Anthony on trial. Not only is the preview image not visible while watching the video, but it's different from the one I saw only moments earlier when I watched the video for the first time.

I received my mug today but it is damaged :( so now I'm awaiting the replacement.

CafePress were very quick and easy to deal with. They're replacing it free of charge and not even making me ship the damaged mug back to them.

pr0n.free  ;D

That means the lack of pr0n. Surely you wanted pr0n4.free ?

I'm not sure why the thumbnail/preview image thingy shows a picture of a woman
It's a common embed trick; youtube pulls certain frames for the preview, and if you know which one it's going to be, replace that frame with something more interesting or risqué.
Works real well on adolescent boys. ;)

What's interesting about it is that the preview image that got me interested in the video in the first place was another one that doesn't actually appear in the video. But it was just of a funny looking dog.

« Last post by Deozaan on January 20, 2012, 11:16 AM »
I don't know if I'm being misunderstood or if I'm the one misunderstanding, but I feel I need to clarify that I'm not saying that protests in general are bad or useless. What I am trying to say is this:

In the specific case of using HTTP Error 404/503 to protest SOPA/PIPA, I disagree with the method of protest because I think it is not an effective form of protest.

In the case of many of the big-name "blackouts" from sites like Wikipedia, Google, or Reddit, I was not impressed with the follow-through used. Google turned their logo black. Wikipedia's blackout was only for the English site and easily overridden with (or due to lack of) javascript. Reddit only did it for half of the day.

IMO those are examples of half-hearted protests. If you're going to protest something you should first come up with an effective form of protest and then commit to follow through with the protest.

No need to guess. It's in my profile. ;)

Deozaan that would have been a clever image for a protest to mimic, but a true 404/etc in protest would have been "too thin of a message" and even savvy users wouldn't know it's not just one more site that didn't keep their site up.

Some sites actually did return HTTP Error 503, which as I understand is something Google suggested (so that page ranking in search results wouldn't be affected like they would by Error 404, or something). The only one I know of specifically that did this is http://imgur.com/.

To anyone who tried to visit imgur.com, all they saw was an actual HTTP Error 503 and no information about SOPA/PIPA. If you didn't know it was SOPA Blackout Day, you might have thought imgur was just having problems that day.

That's exactly the "form of protest"  I disagreed with and thought was completely ineffective and pointless.

That said, if I'm being totally honest, I also wasn't completely impressed with the blackouts that did involve (links to) information about SOPA/PIPA.

That would be like opposing a war by signing up to join the military. Or showing your disapproval of McDonald's by having everybody buy a Big Mac with fries and a shake. It just doesn't make sense to me.

No, it's not like that at all.

[snip]

It's a form of civil disobedience, a way to make your point and be heard, a way to make sure every visitor to your website is made aware of the issue.

Why do workers picket in front of a business when they go on strike? Isn't the act of not working good enough to make their point? Why carry signs and chant?

At the time I expressed my disapproval, I thought sites were essentially going to 404 (or 503) rather than post information about SOPA/PIPA. So it didn't seem a useful form of protest to me. It would have been, to use your example, like the workers just not showing up to work. Or actually, it would have been more like workers showing up and working for free to protest potential future pay reductions.

The IRC channel will still be open for anyone who wants to chat. Grab yourself an IRC client (like mirc) and join the efnet network, channel #donationcoder.

So it's kind of like leaving civilization and going camping for a day. ;) Let's all gather around the campfire and tell stories.
