So I should not tell anybody from the UK that my student loan was from "Fannie Mae"  ;D ;D

Gasp! Certainly not!

No real arguments from me, Dirhael. They seem to have made it more stable and I haven't encountered anything that it won't show, but ultimately I simply don't care that much about being able to view my open apps like this. The default alt-tab coupled with the taskbar is all that I need.

Just to clarify, I don't think Actual Tools' prices are that bad - I just don't have any burning need/desire for any of the functionality that they offer as I have other solutions in place. I was quite enamoured of Actual Window Manager but *knew* that I wouldn't wind up using it that much and, as noted, already have Object Desktop, which offers much of the same functionality.

Curt - in case I miss it - Happy Birthday! I was simply referring to the fact that you are only as old as you feel and you come across as someone young at heart  :)

PS obviously, the Live Preview option significantly increases Reflex Vision's RAM usage, but only when you're actually invoking it. It's VM usage is pretty steady at about 22 MB.

Ha, ha... can't say I disagree, Curt. You'll note that I've never made the jump either (though at the 50% off offer, I was tempted). Like you, I don't need these features enough to warrant the price...
4706
Hmm.. Thanks for that Dirhael. Interestingly, this is a feature of Reflex Vision (and Entbloess before that): Live Preview. I've reinstalled the latest version and when using alt-tab the thumbnails are live - I can watch a download progress indicator complete the download and change to "download complete", for example. Just verified that this works under XP Pro.

Sorry cybernetnews, I'm not really following what you're saying about the Aero interface (I don't have access to Vista). What does Aero offer above and beyond what these various options listed running under XP offer? You may have answered this in your post above, but as a teacher it is my perogative to encourage my students to read carefully without actually practising what I preach!

Well, young Curt, all I can say is try the Actual demo for Actual Window Guard. As I mentioned, if you install it and uninstall it you should be offered a significant discount on purchasing it. Hang on, I'll check the current discount if using this method... 20%. I saved the link  8) on the off-chance that I ever decided to buy afterall. Note, though, that the amount does vary - I saved it at a time when they were offering a 50% discount (since then - about a year ago - I've not seen it higher than 20% but have certainly seen it as low as 10%). As I have WindowBlinds and ObjectDesktop I've never really been too tempted to buy. The developer is good and responsive - I had quite an exchange with him regarding resource usage issues that I was seeing. He's very courteous and open to suggestions.

Two points, first the second one... Thanks for the link to TitleChanger, nite_monkey. I'd forgotten about that one. Armando, try installing the demo of whichever flavour of Actual tool you are interested in and then uninstall. In the past they have offered as much as 50% off to purhcase it then and there! It usually runs at a more pedestrian 10-20%, but it might make a difference in your decision making process!

BTW (Off-topic Alert! Code Red!): How's the PhD coming? I think we need to form a support network...!

I know that various of the Actual tools can do this (but they're not free!). Other than that, I'd be interested in a simple solution to this as well.

It's the rain that does it. C&P, spend three months in constant a drizzle and you'll have had an English summer!

No wonder everyone talks about Victoria and Vancouver Island as being more British than Britain...

Over the last couple of days, the gemx website has dropped off the face of the, er, internet. This is either a good thing, meaning that they're busy tweaking things or it is a bad thing, indicating that they are closing up shop. Personally, I'd be very surprised if the latter were the case, so fingers crossed for the former!

BTW- There are American equivalents to 'wanker' 'bugger' etc. but I hesitate to expound in such good company...

Yes, of course you are right. Like you, I would hate to compromise anyone by revealing these depravities on this board. Having said that, it is worth noting that the equivalents aren't nearly as common in terms of usage as they are on the sceptered isle. Seriously, you want to hear creative use of foul language (to the point that the creativity exists in making the mundane/innocuous FOUL) spend some time in the UK. There is far more range, depth and sophistication to uttering oaths there... Or perhaps I say that because it is novel. I don't know.

I will say this, in closing: app mentioned that her daughter came up with fanny cranny as an alternative swear word. I would strenuously urge everyone from NA to AVOID referring to their bottom as their fanny. Likewise the fanny pack - avoid it like the plague when conversing with anyone from the UK (or really, from an English speaking region outside of NA). Fanny has a more gender specific (though I misappropriate the term gender as it is a social construct and, unbeknownst to the NA portion of our audience, we are dealing with biology here...) meaning and is quite crude. When I referred to "my fanny pack" during my first visit there I was met with consternation, concern, surprise, etc. as I was assured that as a male it is a physical impossibility for me to have a fanny to pack... I've said too much, gone too far. Gentle readers, forgive me...

Unless roboform is supported, I have no intent to swap to this anytime soon. Sorry, but opera needs to realize that users want to be able to expand their browser if they so desire to.

Hear! Hear! Couldn't agree more. The biggest barrier for me is the lack of plug-in support as well - particularly Roboform. Other than that, I LOVE Opera.

MrPostman is an open-source Outlook add-in (Open source) that allows you to access US based Yahoo accounts from a mail client. However, it's utility comes and goes and while it works consistently for some people, never works for others. FWIW it worked for me for years and then stopped. Always works for my wife! YMMV...

Well... Outlook 2003 handles all three brilliantly. I'm sure some of the other options will as well - Thunderbird (free), the Bat, Eudora (also free - just went OS), Pegasus, you could also look at Do-Organizer (won't do Hotmail though, AFAIK).

Sadly, Armando the thesis writing is far from over... What this last month represents is more a last gasp for summer - I had a house full (literally!) of in-laws with whom I could not really communicate (they're all Korean) and spent a lot time on DC. I actually got a lot of PhD work done, too, but it is more planning and writing the skeleton - I still have to flesh it out. As of tomorrow, I will be teaching three classes again so will have to organise my time better. Hopefully, I'll be able to participate here as well.

Wreckcarzz and others: if you are a student or teacher you can use openoffice.org's big brother (Star Office) for free. This is worth it if you are looking for more fonts, expanded dictionary and thesaurus and Adabas, which is their Access clone (database). Just FYI... It is very good (as is openoffice.org, of course).

Mouser removes e-mail addresses from the mailing list if e-mails get bounced, so if your spam trap is empty, contact mouser and ask if you can have it reinstated as this is likely what has happened at some point in the past. Then be sure to add DC to your whitelist!
