Living Room / Re: Recommend to me the BEST USB stick to get
« Last post by superboyac on April 19, 2009, 06:09 AM »
Find me a USB Stick with a cap that isn't integrated into the design that is?  They all last about 2-3 months before they end up missing/lost/falling off/etc.  The best I found for this so far is SanDisk, and they are still easy to loose.  If that is the biggest issue, get one that swings out like my PNY XLR8.
 (see attachment in previous post)
(Actually that was one of my requirements when I was looking.  I hated the caps)
I like it...the only problem is that it's at least twice the price of other sticks of the same capacity!

Interesting info...

Yes, I definitely want the speed.  But I also would like to avoid the cap.  If I keep it in my pocket, I can see the cap coming off.  Hmm...maybe the cap is the dealbreaker.

OK, so what's the fastest attached-cap drive?  Is it steeladept's PNy above?

Living Room / Recommend to me the BEST USB stick to get
« Last post by superboyac on April 19, 2009, 03:11 AM »
I'm finally going to try to make a portable system to carry around with me.  Can anyone recommend to me the absolute best USB stick to buy?  I don't really care about looks or price, more for reliability, speed, quality.

usually, I'll just whatever USB stick is around, i don't care.  But I was kind of wondering if there actually are differences in quality among sticks, and not just aesthetic.

Looking forward to the responses!

Oh yeah, thanks Carol!!

cranio, the monitors were a great bargain.  they were literally half the price of comparable 24" monitors from Dell and other brands.  So i got two for the price of one. And I doubt I can tell the difference in quality much.

MonitorBenQG2400WD (x2)$610.17NCIXUS

how are you getting on with these two :) ?
I'm very happy with them!!  Mouser was exactly right about the benefits of having two monitors, it makes everything better.
My only very minor complaints are that the monitors are not height adjustable.  But the height works in my case.  Also, occasionally, when the two monitors wake up from a sleep mode, sometimes the primary one won't turn back on until you turn it off and then back on.  This happens one time out of 20 or so.  But I think it's an issue with the ATi card than the monitors.

I open evernote 3, and my information is there.  If I enter a password it syncs.  If  I don't, it lets me edit what I have locally.  Even if I do sync, my information is not publicly available, but secured by a password.  I can also create a local notebook that never syncs, but I haven't used that facility.  *shrugs*

I could do things another way as far as syncing my information, but tools like dropbox, evernote, and google documents make it so I don't have to.  As far as features, it does support nested tagging, attributes, and multiple notebooks, but beyond that I couldn't tell you if it was dumbed down as I never used it very much before 3, even though I had a license.   Now with version 3, I use it all the time.
Cool, thanks.  Well, looks like I oughta give it a try!

i could have sworn evernote 3 stores the information online, and not locally.  Is there anywhere that talks about the details of all of this?  And I agree 100% with tranglos about online anything.  i don't want anything of mine stored online.  i went through great efforts to setup a multiple hard-drive backup/syncing/imaging solution on my computer because i want complete control of my data.  if i need to share my personal data online, I'll do it through very specific file-sharing methods connected to my main computer that i set up myself.  But most people will not go to these extents or even know how to do all this, which is why online methods work for a lot of non-computer-geek people.

It's not web only... I use the desktop app, and love that everything is synced up between my work, home, iPhone, and web...
I know you can USE it on the desktop, but isn't everything stored online?

superboyac, just a tag here since I just now read your review.  Nice job!

One thing about Evernote (not the web version out now, but the one you had to download and install) that is not documented is its ability to save in real time

I have never lost any keystroke when the screen went the BSOD-ish shade of blue! :)  So, if one needs to have the assurance that what is being typed will not be lost, then Evernote is the ticket.  I just wish it could copy down music notation too!

Ah yes!  Evernote 2.2...it was a great application.  i still use it.  I wish they never went web only.

http://www.bluebeam.com/

I've been using this as my preferred PDF editor for years now.  I've always been surprised by how little I hear around the web about this program.  So, yesterday, while talking to a support staff member, I asked why so little is heard about it.  Basically, they don't do any advertising and rely on word of mouth.  And they do fine like that, so they're happy.  Also, he said the application initially was geared towards the architectural industry needs (CAD drawings, designs, etc.).  However, that was a long time ago.  I think the program is fantastic for any kind of serious editing of pdf's.

I've tried many Acrobat Pro alternatives, but Bluebeam is the best by far.  First of all, it's on version 7 now, and it's VERY polished.  They're really ironed out any rough edges over the years.  It's not that it can do anything than Acrobat can't, it's just that it does it far easier, and everything is accessible a lot more intuitively.  I'm in love with this program.

But it is kind of expensive, like Acrobat.  So a lot of individual users would find it out of their price range.  I'm very thankful my company continues to upgrade the licensing...I actually think it gets charged automatically without them knowing because i think I'm the only one using it!  Everyone is using Acrobat 9 here now.  But I'm not saying anything because i don't want them thinking they're spending a lot of money on two redundant applications.  Then i'd have to convince them to keep Bluebeam, but I'd be the only one, blah blah.

Anyway, for anybody that spends a lot of time editing pdfs, importing/exporting, creating pdfs, it's really the best application I've seen for that.
Below is my screenshot of it:

Cianoc,
would it not be possible to get another copy of Evernote out there somewhere ? (then again, if you want something in development)

I'm not in no way a heavy user of these apps but I'm using IQ/SQLNotes for work, web-clipping, and now am organising my notes from evernote in there too.
I'm still using Evernote as a "scratchpad"
I have a copy of it if anyone needs it.  Evernote gave it to me themselves when i asked.

Coding Snacks / IDEA: Basketball playbook animator
« Last post by superboyac on April 10, 2009, 03:34 PM »
There is an individual known as "Wilt" at the Lakers forum I go to who has provided insanely detailed and accurate plays that the Lakers use.  It is amazing information.
Anyway, someone told him that his stuff would be even more of a hit if it were animated.  Apparently, there are and have been programs that do this:
jes-soft
"coach's edge" [extinct]

The guy used to use coaches edge, but it doesn't exist anymore.  he said it was the best.  He doesn't like jes-soft.

So, I was wondering if anyone here would like to create a software like this, based on his input?  You know, try to make th ultimate, most perfect playbook software?  Just an idea.  I'll invite the guy to this thread.

Steven, your posts deserve their own blog...I'm tempted to make a special section for them on my website!

OMG SB.

That case full of stuff looks like the 'Arm & Launch' box for a missile intercept system.

Do the house lights dim when you fire it up? ;D
Yeah!  I love that case.  It's huge and quiet and has plenty of room for everything.  I'm a pretty tall guy, 6'3", and I was shocked at the size of the case.  Now I know the meaning of a full-size tower.  I think I always thought my mid-towers were considered full, but I was very wrong.

Two months later...and I think I'm enjoying it now.  That first month was exhausting.  I'm still not "settled" with it yet.  I'm still ironing everything out.
I still haven't cleaned my house yet.  I gave away a lot of junk in my place to a couple of garage sales my friends were having.  If you read my article on my website, i talk about how I really hate this whole process.  People think I like it because I'm a computer geek, but i don't.  I like HAVING an awesome computer...doesn't mean I like building one.

« Last post by superboyac on April 05, 2009, 06:34 PM »
Since I'm not finding time to finish up the articles about building my computer, I will put up the pictures here for now.  These are a bunch of before and after shots of my new computer process.  It made the upstairs rooms of my home a mess, but worth it in the end.  I gave away a useless, and ugly shelf I had before.  Setting it up and working through all the issues took a while also.  The longest thing (and I'm still working on it little by little) was restructuring my file organizational methods.  If you know how particular I am about this, it was really difficult to change.  I picked mouser's brain in great detail and used most of his advice.  Now, everything is as systematic as can possibly be.  Here are the pics:

Living Room / Re: Stupid Question: File Type Change: Icons
« Last post by superboyac on April 02, 2009, 01:55 PM »
I am, however, having a hard time finding the correct icon for FLV files though. It's nowhere to be seen in the Program Files>Adobe directory. I think it's one of the problems I'm having that is forcing me to reinstall Windows, as I've discussed in another thread.
now, now, don't be ridiculous.  Worst case scenario, just pick any icon you like and use that for the flv icon.  i'm sure if you google for any icon you're looking for, you'll find it rather quickly.  Then, just go into Types and set it up.

PS.  My flv icons are also imageless.  I'll change it tonight.
