Hmm.

I personally didn't find those funny - and I think it's pretty lame that they use Win9x BSODs considering the PC is running XP. That was perhaps the funniest part, though :P

Time Machine is very impressive.

I also suspect it's just Subversion VCS tricked out with one of those stunningly beautiful front-ends Mr. Jobs & Co. do so well. Apple actually made version control look pretty. That's gotta be some sort of breakthrough right there.
Nah, nothing to do with subversion - simply a bunch of hardlinks.

rsnapshot works similarly for lunix systems.

General Software Discussion / Re: What are your opinions on fan-editing?
« Last post by f0dder on September 27, 2008, 12:38 PM »
i'm very impressed that someone has put together a thoughtful fan edit of David Lynch's Dune - that has been crying out for some serious re-editing since it's release.
Or rather: it has made Dune fans cry out to get Lynch lynched.

One thing is adapting a story for another platform (ie, book->movie) - I'm all for that. But making changes that make no sense? No thank you. One of the cool things about the fremen is that they're mad elite with their Krys knives, and can take on the Sardaukar troops just using their knives. Wtf did Lynch add those "weirding modules"? And why is baron Harkonnen depicted as a raving lunatic, when he in fact is a stone-cold calculating psychopath? And why is he flying madly around, when he's (in the book) just using the lifters to reduce his body mass so he can walk?

Iirc there were also some other things that pissed me off, but it's been some years since I saw the movie. It's really a shame that Lynch messed up several aspects, as I like the visual style (I absolute adore the visual effect used for the Holzmann shields), and a bunch of the actors were decently cast.

FireFox3 + AdBlockPlus + NoScript + DropMyRights (or a limited user account)... that ought to keep you safe.

I wouldn't use a thing like "hostfile", a thing like that just can't get updated fast enough to be really efficient, and considering how often the hostfile is consulted... I don't want it having a zillion entries.

How lame - sounds like they totally ruined the game.

Then again, it was all about camping and grinding... they could've done better from the start.

I did make 58, but dunno 59.

I'm pretty sure I never went with them to MC though. I should've remembered that. Unless it was one of those "beer raids", if you get what I mean :-[

f0dder, you did get to level 60, it was me who got to 56 or so
Eh... I'm pretty sure I didn't :-s

I got a mount and stuff, but don't you get that already at 50 or so? I'm preeeetty sure I only got to 50-something, because my guild was about to take on Molten Core, where you needed to be lvl ~60 with decent gear in order to stand a chance (at least back then), and I wasn't there.

Played up to level ~56 or something like that, tried a friend's homemade fishing bot, stopped using it, got banned 3 months later, shrugged and moved on. Was fun enough, but never got me really addicted... unlike some of my friends who I hardly saw for at least a year.

I don't really regret not making it to 60, from what I've heard there's way too much grinding after that... as if it wasn't bad enough already :)

Haha, yeah. I was just kidding around. Still wouldn't you have rather seen Gordon Freeman wielding the Painkiller rather than some cheap crowbar to kill the aliens?
Not really, no - one of the nice things about Half-Life is that you feel like a (mostly :P) ordinary Joe who's put In Medias Res. Worked really well for me :)

Paul Keith: oh, I'm a fan of Alien & Aliens alright. Pretty impressive that the first was done two years before I was born, but still rocks so much today (sure, having very dark lighting helps with mood and making things not look sucky, and of course design by Gieger tends to always be a success).

But not every alien has to be like that one :)

I really do not understand how being ignorant of what the firewall is up to makes it dangerous.  Seems to me that for even the most novice user then a firewall like the windows one is a little piece of security you can have which takes no work on your part.
Exactly. The Windows Firewall generally "just works". If a normal user is presented with all kinds of prompts to add firewall rules, bad things happen.

nosh: outbound blocking of the type you want is a false sense of security - and it tends to make people lazy. To the point where you probably don't realize you've got a piece of malware because it's hijacking an internet explorer connection and sending out whatever as a perfectly legitimately-looking HTTP connection on port 80. If you want outbound filtering that works, we're talking a completely different level of sophistication, and fascist-tightened firewall rules.

Otherwise, you're far better off with simple a NATing router without DMZ, Windows Firewall to protect against LAN/WIFI attacks, and possibly a decent pro-active/behavioral-blocking antivirus app.

Spot on the sugar, Carol!

Imho outbound filtering is pretty useless for a software firewall. When you reach the point where you need it, your system is already compromised and you're SOL. As soon as untrusted code is running on your computer, that untrusted code can bypass the firewall... sure, limited user accounts etc. help mitigate this problem, but the trick is not getting untrusted code on your system in the first place. OK, if you're paranoid you can use a software firewall to check if apps "phone home", but frankly I've more or less stopped caring.

Windows Firewall does the trick of filtering incoming connections. And yes, you probably do need this even when you're behind a NAT'ing router without DMZ (which has nothing to do with firewall, btw, even if the end effects are somewhat the same). Why do you need this? In case a friend brings over an infected computer, or you have a significant other on your LAN that might get catch something nasty.

End-users generally don't need to mess with the firewall, especially since most proper apps these days add exceptions during install or config time. Putting a firewall with outbound filtering on a regular Joe's computer is a pretty insane thing to do, and would probably result in worse security since they'd just click yes to all those "omg, something happened I don't have a rule for!" popups.

The Windows Firewall is quite adequate, it's stable, and it's light on resources. The bad things said about it has mostly been out of ignorance, FUD, or marketing interests from the various software firewall vendors. If you need outbound filtering, you need a proper firewall box, not a software firewall on client machines.

Wordpad must be the most useless app in Windows. There, a completely useless remark, but I just felt like it. 8)
Have you tried Windows Firewall for XP?  ;D
I hope that was joke?
What if I was serious?  8)
Then I'd have to ask 'why?'.

The Windows firewall protects against incoming attacks, which is what a software firewall should be doing. It's pretty light on resources, doesn't generally get in your way, doesn't cause stability problems, and works out of the box.

Reason 4 - there was a nice offer including the MIDI-keyboard at the same price you normally pay for just Reason. He already had a keyboard with MIDI interface, but it had pretty bad latency (dunno why, really) - the new keyboard is MIDI-only, and connects via USB rather than the old-style MIDI port - and has much better latency

I hated Half-Life like the pit of Hades but it could be because I never got past the reality that I could dominate the early opponents with a crowbar. I mean a crowbar?! A freaking crowbar against aliens!!!???
A crowbar would be quite effective against humans, so why not aliens as well?

I loved half-life and half-life 2 + the extra episodes. Decent graphics (but not over-the-top, runs great even on older hardware), nice storyline, etc.

something for the podcast maybe?
Could be cool.

I'm sure Ebbe would like to hear *any* feedback whatsoever, and he certainly wouldn't mind doing something with/for donationcoder. After all, he already got one of those "get well soon!" mugs efter the whole "people throwing stuff from highway brdiges" incident.

(Sorta shameless advertising, but I hope that's OK with you guys since it's my brother, no money is involved, etc.)

One of my younger brothers (well, in a sense actually "the other" since we have p3lb0x on board but not "the other one") has been dabbling with music creation for a while, and has finally found the courage to upload some of his creations to youtube. So if you like electronic/technoi-ish music (or if you're just plain curious), check out the following two tracks and let me hear what you think :)

It was moderately funny the first year they did it. But it's become nothing but an annoyance now, with everybody and their little sister cow running around talking like pirates, wearing pirate costumes, and generally being silly idiots >_<
