^ah okay, I thought ye were comparing with Photoshop (just in case not clear: I was talking about Photoshop's capabilities when exporting *paths* - not pixels).

I havent heard much positive about Corel unfortunately over the years. I do know of people who were using it professionally but not for publication.

FWIW when creating PDF's, I've also had trouble *with certain fills* with the supposedly dream combination Illustrator and Acrobat/distiller (CS4 & CS3 respectively). My solution was to (successfully) use the free PDFCreator (which is also unfortunately included in the "Contest" - The most difficult Opt Out screens on installs!? thread).

I dont often get stuff published/offset-printed but have had no problems with the PDFCreator PDF's.

CheckVist looks nice and friendly - but it only has English :(

(shows on right of working outline page)

when I think about it I could also use a German-language-only site (if one exists)

General Software Discussion / Collaborative online outliner recommendation?
« Last post by tomos on May 07, 2013, 03:47 AM »
[edit] the project this was planned for has fallen through so I wont be spending too much time testing - but feel free to still contribute suggestions [/edit]
Looking for help here - I cant find a clear recommendation myself.

Need to be:

  • a collaborative online outliner
  • user-friendly (working with some people who are fairly basic users)
  • show each person (individually) what is new since their last visit (*important*)
  • each user can set their choice of language for interface - choice of English and German would be enough (or even just German is such a site exists)
  • preferably free, or not requiring payments for each user (but this at the bottom of the list cause it isnt so important!)

If a spreadsheet meets all requirements apart from outliner, I would consider

THanks in advance :-*

Checkvist sounds good so I'll get an account there and check it out myself:

... and being able to open/save vectors in a format that is acceptable for professional use ...

I assume you mean .pdf or .ps ? Or am I wrong?

I could well be wrong as I havent used more recent versions, but I thought that Photoshop only exported paths to illustrator, i.e. in .ai/illustrator format.
I guess like the doc format for word-processors, any serious graphic software has to be able to open that though :-\

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: CHS: Links to Review and Comments - Add yours
« Last post by tomos on May 04, 2013, 07:57 PM »
Can you put the link in for us? Did PCWorld smash it into one of those infested installer packages or is it a direct link to here?

their download link is a pcworld one, but I dont know what exactly the download is.

New PCWorld review:

In truth, most Clipboard Help+Spell users probably won't scratch the surface of this complex and powerful beast. But even if you only use 10% of what it has to offer, you'll still end up with a more powerful and flexible, clipboard. Try it out.

« Last post by tomos on May 04, 2013, 02:01 PM »
thanks mouser! that was just what I needed now :)

I remember being puzzled why so many (majority?) Russians have dash-cams on their cars during this year's meteor event, which was captured by dash-cams from multiple angles.

The story of why it's almost necessary to have dash-cams isn't as heart-warming obviously, but they certainly do increase the chance of capturing positive moments as well.

(my emphasis:) it's a great way of bringing about change though

Screenshot Captor / Re: Strange Behavior With Picasa
« Last post by tomos on May 04, 2013, 01:51 PM »
The real question is, what's the option to turn off this behavior, and if there is no option for it? Surely they would have an option for it.

at the time when I installed Picasa (Nov. 2011) there was no option. Which was pretty bad (I found the permissions-workaround via search at the time). I havent updated Picasa since (never use it) so dont know current situation...

Where is Picasa getting the file from?  Some temp directory?

I presume it steals the printscreen key, and either makes the screenshot itself, or uses wiondow's screenshot capability (probably the latter, which makes a bmp and places it on the clipboard).

Why do you ask?

This is Picassa being helpful ;) whether you want that help or not...

On my older Picasa install is made the folder under My Pics. There's no related settings in Options. I forget how I stopped it, and I dont have the most recent Picasa version - best do a search about how to stop it.
(I think I had to completely stop access to the folder - I see Folder Properties>Security/Permissions is set to 'deny')

I'm sorry to be just negative, but the only way this can be made acceptable imo, is, if the warning were to have a bigger font and a better colour than the download button (red preferably):

In the video on that page they very sensibly start by defining their terms. I was a bit suprised at the definition though:

Screenshot - 2013-05-01 , 14_56_33.png

"The use of cognitive SKILLS and STRATEGIES to increase the likelihood of a desirable outcome"

It gives the impression of it being more about manipulation than about objectivity.

Did a search (duckduckgo) -
here was the first result (www.criticalthinking.com):

Critical thinking is the identification and evaluation of evidence to guide decision making. A critical thinker uses broad in-depth analysis of evidence to make decisions and communicate his/her beliefs [..]
-
in this definition the objectivity comes first and the decision (desirable outcome?) comes after.

Not saying anything against the site or anything - just suprised.

General Software Discussion / Re: Raymond.cc compares antivirus memory usage
« Last post by tomos on April 30, 2013, 05:09 PM »
My biggest problems with AV's are when downloading - they tend to not only check the download but also the contents of the download folder which tends to be over-full - or simply when navigating within any file dialogue (save/open).
I guess those two overlap.

MSE used to really slow things down as per above, but it has improved and stabilised the last few months.

I like this track and the video (I tend to forget this thread is "music videos")
track is from 1971, probably most of the footage too (some is slightly and briefly NSFW I guess).
Video made/edited by the uploader.
