Found Deals and Discounts / TextPipe Pro on BitsduJour Today - 35% off
« Last post by Darwin on September 10, 2007, 07:25 AM »
BitdsuJour is featuring Datamystic's TextPipe Pro today at a 35% discount. That's the good news, the bad news is that it is still $256.75  :( I've always been tempted by this programme but the price is a real stumbling block, particularly with upgrades at $99 a year... Of course, there are two, feature limited, versions that are $199 and $29.95 resepctively (with upgrades priced appropriately) but they are feature reduced... Feature comparison matrix here.

General Software Discussion / Re: Stay Away From Microsoft VISTA
« Last post by Darwin on September 09, 2007, 05:25 PM »
I'm sorry I can't remember for the life of me where I read it, but one blog writer summed up the disaster which is Vista perfectly. He stated that the United States started from scratch at ground zero and put a man on the moon in the same amount of time that Microsoft took to release Vista & they (MS) were starting with a solid base (XP) that had nothing really serious flaws to begin with.

This is a bit confusing - I've worked it through, I think, but stating the "US started from scratch at ground zero and put a man on the moon"... made me first think of the US War of Independence as starting from scratch. Then "ground zero" made me think of September 11th and the World Trade Centre. Finally I arrived a this: the US implemented a plan to land a person on the moon and saw the plan from realization through to completion in the same amount of time as M$ took to roll out Vista. Makes sense. Have I got it right?

I have a non-functioning link to DM in my SoftMaker Office 2006 apps toolbars. I've never been able to find out anything about it - is there a version already that is in beta?

Just thought of another alternative (that I have never used...) that I don't see in niefer's original list: the spreadsheet component of Wordperfect Office.

PS I'm running the beta of Presentations as well - very impressive. I'm going to try it in a class for the first time tomorrow!

General Software Discussion / Re: Quotes organiser?
« Last post by Darwin on September 09, 2007, 02:33 PM »
Well, GemX has something that will allow you to do this... You can go for a standalone called WizQuotes - which I have not tried - or purchase the base of Do-Organizer which features a quotes component. It *might* be too rudimentary for your needs.I hesitate to recommend them at the moment, though...

Anyway, here's a screenshot of Do-organizer.

Do-organizer Quotes.png

An alternative that might be worth looking at is Evernote - the free version will allow you to organize and tag your quotes to your hearts content.

Finally, a FARR plug-in would be cool

(Hmmm, tabs overload reminds me of something...)
]

Your webbrowser at the moment?  :P

I agree WRT tabs and checkboxes. I guess I'm a victim of being so used to BRU that I am oblivious to its shortcomings... At any rate, I am familiar enough with its interface that I just check off what I want and off I go!
4662
I dunno... what I LIKE about BRU is that everything is right there in front of you. I actually find the interface to be extremely intuitive. It's one of its strengths in my (not so) humble opinion. Anyway, to each his or her own.

my favorite is Bulk Rename Utility

http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/

+1 for Bulk Rename Utility  I've tried a number of renamers (including PFrank, The Rename, Oscars Renamer, etc.) and BRU is by far the best, in my (ever so humble) opinion. Jim Wilsher, the developer is constantly tweaking it. He accepts donations so if you like the app, consider donating.

General Software Discussion / Re: FileZilla 3 gets released
« Last post by Darwin on September 09, 2007, 01:01 PM »
Looks interesting Lashiec - thanks for posting this. I'm off to read the wiki and the linux reiview (though I am on Windows). I'll ask anyway - is FileZilla a big advance over similar apps such as Get Right and StarDownloader (available in both free and Pro versions, though evidently abandoned)?
4665
Good idea, ak_. I'm amazed - I've just visited the map and apparently the only person within a couple of thousand kilometres of me is Free, in Arizona (who has all of the USA west of Louisiana and Montana). I have Canada to myself (details -where and when - of my inauguration as King will be posted shortly) while PhilB66 OWNS all of Asia! Amazing, where are Renegadge, Sri, biox, and ska? Those are just the users I can think of off the top of my head that I *know* are in Asia, I dimly recall there being a regular contributor based in Japan as well... but have forgotten his or her nickname. C'mon cranialscopical, nighted, and Aramando, don't leave me dangling up here all by myself!

General Software Discussion / Re: GemX - missing in action
« Last post by Darwin on September 09, 2007, 12:35 PM »
Ah yes, good memories! I really appreciated your comments on TexNotes in particular (remember the debate about whether or not it should be shelved in deference to Do-Organizer's Scribe?) - always very insightful and balanced.

Like you, I wonder what the other regular contributors to the GemX boards are thinking. I wish there were some way to reach them. That desire is, in part, what led me to start this thread - the hope that some of them would happen upon it and post.

Hi BethUK!

Fantastic - I remember you from the GemX forums and had no idea that you are a member here. Welcome to DonationcCoder (almost a year late  :-[)!

I'm on the same page about GemX at the moment - quite shocked about how things are playing out, actually. I really hope that I'm just being paranoid but i am disappointed, having only just purchased the upgrade to Do-Organizer from TexNotes Pro. I'm not using either, either (!), at them moment. For a host of reasons incuding those you've detailed above. For now, I'm just watching and waiting. It will be interesting to see what happens; hopefully at the very least some sort of an explanation will be forthcoming.

Ah, I see where I made my error WRT the xls file - it wasn't actually intended to be opened in Excel! Oops....

Curt, in both PlanMaker 2006 and Excel 2003 I get three worksheets labelled Ark1, Ark2, and Ark3. Only Ark1 contains anything and that is "50" in cell A:1. Is this what you posted? If so, what is the purpose? Loki, is this what you are getting as well, in openoffice.org? Spreadsheet should handle an Excel 2003 file no problem...

I guess I'll have to download it and give it a try... sigh, and I only just weaned myself off Firefox and Opera. Oh well, what is life if not enhanced by variety?

Living Room / Re: Change title bar name (in any application)
« Last post by Darwin on September 08, 2007, 05:26 PM »
Cool, justice! Despite the fact that I don't have Actual Tools (of any flavour) installed, I would like the option to re-title applications. This is because I have some bizarre settings problem that I've never been able to track down to source (and I do not want to format my computer and reinstall windows): for some dratted reason Paint, ArcGis, Notepad and a few other apps display their windows titles, dialogue text and taskbar titles in Korean! I can read them but would be happier with a consistent interface - all English as I am at best fluent in English and barely passable in French in Korean... Anyway, will watch TitleChanger with interest.
