Nothing - it is a full version as far as I can tell - and they even supply some free graphics files to get you started. Version 6 has a few new features (and doesn't need full screen mode). I can't remember exactly what was new in version 6 though.

From the Bryce 6 help files:

What's new in Bryce 6
What's New in Bryce 6?

Bryce 6 introduces the following new features:

          o Random Replicate

o Main Working Window color scheme changed from blue to green

Other items updated/fixed:

o Proximity bug with metaballs and trees fixed for Bryce 6 metaballs (Bryce 5 metaballs cannot inherit the fix)
o Top file menu no longer permanently hidden
o Grouped trees added to the Objects Library no longer crash Bryce when imported into the library or loaded into the scene
          o Macintosh permissions problems fixed
          o Multi-Processor support completed

          o Stability increased
          o Mac Intel compatibility added
          o Nano-Preview reflects IBL settings
o Mac now imports textures from DAZ|Studio correctly and imports in general improved
          o Can now keyframe Materials
o Collision Detection added in the Multi-Replicate feature
o Library titles and descriptions now allow additional text to be added to accommodate the larger library preview size

General Software Discussion / Re: Download Managers
« Last post by Carol Haynes on June 15, 2007, 03:37 AM »
Except for not seeing anything onscreen you can achieve both of these (well nearly) for almost any download manager you choose by simply installing something like FileBox Extender (doesn't work on Vista). Then you can set up a list of folders and quickly choose the right folder from the usual save dialogue (they are all in a single drop down menu).

I think it is the wave of porn related spam of recent weeks ... the internet is drwoning in the crap  and ISPs are struggling to deal with it.

Everytime I open my email account I have about 40 emails of porn to delete manually (spam blocking seems to be getting circumvented a lot recently!)

If one of the bastards comes near me I'll show them how to get a bigger penis!

Argh... that didn't take long. 1 bad freeze, numerous odd behaviors, and for the frigging love of god: for some reason when you zoom with the mouse it doesn't zoom toward the cursor!

Looks like PhotoFiltre is next...
you're using vista arent you? maybe it's not ready yet ...

PS which version did you try?

I am using XP and the three times I ran GIMPshop it crashed! Doesn't look like a Vista issue.

If you don't want PhotoShop then Paintshop Pro is a good alternative.

If you want something dead simple to fix red-eye etc. howabout ACDSee Editor ?

Carol, check out GIMPShop as a transitional app, because it shares the exact same menus and toolbars as Photoshop. Also, here are some Gimp Tutorials, most of them pretty fundamental tasks.

Well they have tried to make it a bit similar - but it isn't really similar at all. The menus are not the same and even after running the compatible shortcuts links batch file the keyboard shortcuts don't work in the same way.

It was interesting to install and look at (and it does load fast) but I don't think I will keep it on my system.

Sounds like a good solution.

Maybe you could implement the single license key (we talked about this a couple of years ago) for all apps via a centrally held ini file (say in C:\Program Files\DonationCoder\donationcoderapps.ini or C:\Windows\donationcoderapps.ini) which could also keep a list of installed applications (registered in the ini file as such when installed) and unzipped applications (the applications could register when they run each time). Then the update could use the installer or just unzip as appropriate.

If the unzipped application folder is not present when the update is run then either a download could be offered or simply a warning that the application folder is missing - and optionally deleted from the registration file.

The ini file approach would be quite useful because then if you have multiple copies of unzipped applications they could all be monitored during the update process.

It would also have the advantage of having a single central license - so if you install a new app you don't have to find the universal key again.

Users who get free individual app temporary keys could stick to the old key system and not get the automatic updates! (Could be an advantage to making a small donation).

Well, I'm swearing off PhotoShop. I hate Adobe and I hate all their programs. Not to mention the planned obsolescence (new model every year even if they've made very little changes), the insane prices, or Adobe's fondness of proprietary file formats.

Bit harsh ... yes they do come out with new versions regularly but they generally do include a lot of new features asked for by users and are well written and stable applications aimed squarely at the professional graphics market (hence the price) though they do consumer level versions at competitive prices.

I have used Photoshop 6, 7 and CS2 - I don't upgrade every year but the jump from PS 6 to CS2 is quite large in terms of new features etc. I haven't tried CS3 yet and will probably skip a year.

Proprietary formats ??? As far as I can tell Photoshop supports just about every format out there (both reading and writing). True it uses PSD formats for its own native files - but what format would you suggest that can store all the editing information?

I've tried The GIMP before, but I think I dismissed it pretty quickly.

That was pretty much my reaction when I tried it on both Windows and Linux. IMHO it makes PS look easy to use.

If you want a freebie why not give PhotFiltre a try.

Note that not all USB drives are compatible - which is why it is disabled by default! Though how you are supposed to know ....

FWIW My Seagate external drive seems OK with it.

I have licenses for both Spyware Doctore and Webroot Spy Sweeper.

They both seem pretty effective at what they do but both are resource hogs. I have finally settled on Spy Sweeper for day to day use because it is marginally less heavy on resources.

I just really wish we could have some giant scum filter in the internet that sucks up the crappy idiots who force everyone to buy these applications and degrade systems this much just to feel safe online.

Sometimes it makes you wonder who gains by internet scumware - strikes me all the companies producing firewalls, spyware, trojans, rootkits and viruses have a vested interest in making sure the level of attack is maintained on the web. But I am probably just a bit paranoid.

Nope - this is Bryce 5.5 (the next version with a slightly tweaked interface) and they seem to have passed it to Download.com without any download time limit (as far as I can see).

Originally I got Bryce 5 fro free when they ran a promo and upgraded to 5.5. Then version 6 came out.

This is a really good offer - even if you only have a passing interest in 3D graphic creation.

Great idea - the Mouser catches another one (you must be getting fat these days)

Will this only work for 'installed' software or will it also work for software that is run from a folder directly?

I'm still scratching my head why Linux users now get an open source version for free and there is no equivalent on other platforms?

Thank you, Madam, you were very nice with me I will try to remember that you helped me much several times

Much appreciated ...

Don't forget you may be paranoid about your English - there is no need. You speak (well type - I haven't heard your accent) very good English and far batter than I can attempt in any other language!

It does seem to work a bit with Firefox 2.0.0.4 if you simply over ride compatability checking.

To save you the hassle I have updated the extension and attached a copy (you'll need to unzip it) so that it thinks it works up to version 4.5 !!!

I have to say it ain't impressive!

Just highlight what you want on a page, right click on it and clip to OneNote.

Nothing apparently happens but when you open a not you can simply paste what you clipped.

Effectively it seems to be a substitute for copy - unless it did something significantly different in Firefox pre. 1.5

Update ... actually it does slightly more than copy it to the clipboard - id adds the page URL

eg. sc.gif

Further update ... There is a setting for the extension in Firefox - you need to set the location of OneNote. On my system it is at:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\ONENOTE.EXE

Once you have entered the correct path using the clipper add-on automatically adds it to a new note and opens it onscreen.

See: sc.gif

in my Firefox I get there by Tools > Add-ons

Hopefully it is the same in your version but I know I have an extension which modifies how all my add-ons appear.

I'm glad that I'm not alone in feeling this way - the talkgraphics board looks to be split about 50/50 on the issue - there's a pretty vocal group decrying the paid upgrade and pointing out that there's not enough there to warrant it. Current users of Xara 3D are also EXTREMELY annoyed that there is no further discount available to them.

Ditto ... I have bought (and upgraded) Xara 3D since version 4 and am a bit pissed off they are now treating it as a filler. I'm also annoyed that if they consider this a paid upgrade why is there insufficient change to warrant an updated manual?

I'll just keep using Pro, watch from the sidelines, and hope my fears are groundless.

Same here but I am not holding my breath ... I have emailed them telling them that I no longer wish to keep my 'affiliated' status (whereby I get a little commission on sales). I haven't said why - it'll be interesting if they need to ask ...

PS: For what it is worth here is a list of what's new int he current version:

http://www.xara.com/.../xtreme/whatsnew.asp

There look like to be some useful additions lower down the list: import/export options, text handling improvements etc.  - but most of it is pure window dressing and bug fixes in all but name (smoother scrolling, rotation and more keyboard shortcuts are hardly a .2 upgrade worth $50 ... and Vista compatibility doesn't make a big selling points to my mind). Embedded linking to edit bitmaps is useful - but hardly revolutionary. The price they are charging now for new purchases will make Adobe Creative Suite 3 standard seem attractive - given that they suggest Photoshop as the editor of choice!

It is probably worth noting that there is also a new Xtreme 3.2 (not Pro) which can be got for $79 (full price) - which isn't bad value.

Upgrade prices for Xtreme Pro 3.2 (includes download and unlock code followed by retail package with printed manual) are:

From Xtreme Pro $49
From Xtreme and X1 $170
From Xara XS, Xara X, CorelXARA, ArtWorks, Xara Studio or Webster 2 $199

I'm sure I was told recently that the upgrade from Pro was going to be $39 - so that is a bit disappointing.

[Edit]
The upgrade versions from Xtreme Pro to Xtreme Pro 3.2 do not included printed manuals - these have not changed since version 3.0 !!!
[/Edit]

4623
I emailed Xara awhile back about this and they pretty candidly told me not to bother upgrading from Xtreme Pro unless there is something really compelling I want in the Magix version.

I can't help feeling that the days of a fast, clean, efficient and brilliantly designed package at a reasonable price are coming to an end - looks like we are heading for price hikes and a bloatfest - in which case I am sticking with Xtreme Pro  as long as I can and after that I will make the effort to learn Adobe Illustrator properly (it's on my system but I still find myself drawn to Xara's products because they are quicker, more intuitive and just  plain cool to use).

Carol (sobbing into a large hanky .... in  mourning)

PS: I am now going to remove the Xara link from my sig as I don't really like the way things are developing.

Why would that youtube video be fake? It's simply the parallels virtual machine and some fancy desktop switcher working together. And it's not running at native performance.

It doesn't say they are running in virtual machines - and the comments below are obviously a bit confused. It seems to imply that by pressing a key it is possible to switch between native installations - which obviously isn't possible which I why I think it is faked.

If someone wants that on a PC (apart from MacOS because of the copyright and ROM difficulties) you could do it with VMWare and an AHK script to swap machines. So what is the big deal?
