General Software Discussion / Re: .Net Framework
« Last post by app103 on May 14, 2007, 02:46 AM »
It's not installed with any official original version of Windows except Vista...but there are OEM's that are/were including it in their software bundle with XP.

I didn't have to download or install .net 1.1 because it came pre-installed on my XP Home SP2 PC.

This is what I use Surfulator for. I select the text/images on the page I want to save, right click and add to Knowledgebase by clicking "add article plus page'. It then attaches it to the article, so I have both the selected text and a copy of the page it came from.

There is no automatic way to cache pages with Surfulator but the developer is a great guy and very approachable. Maybe you could request that he add such an option to automatically add every page you view.

I did find something for Firefox that will cache everything:  Slogger

  • Personal Archive Every page you visit can be automatically (in the background) saved to your hardrive (complete webpage, just HTML, or text), stampted with the date and time. With storage becoming so cheap, you can essentially save everything.
  • plain text history Store browsing history as a customizable plain text file. Store in any format (XML, HTML, CSV, etc.) that suits your needs. Several formats are included in installation Formatted history files can link to online or local copies of pages.
  • Offline reading Save pages when you happen to be on a fast connection, and read them later.
  • Blogging / RSS You could set up all of the following to occur on one click of a button: A confirmation window opens allowing you to enter a description (and/or keywords) of the page. This and other information (date, time, url, etc) are written to a custom format XML file used to power an RSS feed of pages you like. The current page is downloaded and saved to [date]/[url].html on your hard drive, perhaps linked to from your log file.
  • online servies Use services from StumbleUpon, Spurl, del.icio.us, Furl and/or My Yahoo! Search to publish your findings online. (This is temporarity disabled in the newer version...)
  • anything you want Profiles can contain arbitrary javascript code.

This could be just what you are looking for.

aye, uTorrent looks much better in that department but i'm a bit afraid to try it following the recent buy-over from BitTorrent. i prefer an independent client like BitComet.. :)

That just happens to be the first application in the list, alphabetically. I didn't intentionally highlight that to imply that you should use uTorrent. I actually prefer Azureus and only installed uTorrent when Azureus started crashing, recently. (I fixed prob and went back to Azureus)

Adding any program would work the same way. Just click that button and add it. It doesn't have to be uTorrent that you add. It can be any BT client.

Living Room / Microsoft takes on the free world
« Last post by app103 on May 13, 2007, 09:50 PM »
Microsoft claims that free software like Linux, which runs a big chunk of corporate America, violates 235 of its patents. It wants royalties from distributors and users. Users like you, maybe.

Gutierrez refuses to identify specific patents or explain how they're being infringed, lest FOSS advocates start filing challenges to them.

But he does break down the total number allegedly violated - 235 - into categories. He says that the Linux kernel - the deepest layer of the free operating system, which interacts most directly with the computer hardware - violates 42 Microsoft patents. The Linux graphical user interfaces - essentially, the way design elements like menus and toolbars are set up - run afoul of another 65, he claims. The Open Office suite of programs, which is analogous to Microsoft Office, infringes 45 more. E-mail programs infringe 15, while other assorted FOSS programs allegedly transgress 68.

If push comes to shove, would Microsoft sue its customers for royalties, the way the record industry has?

"That's not a bridge we've crossed," says CEO Ballmer, "and not a bridge I want to cross today on the phone with you."

wake me when it can use chocolate.

Wake up, mouser!

It's already being done in chocolate.  ;D

And you can build one yourself! (as soon as you are finished with the bookcase)  :P

Price tags for these machines average around $100,000, but you can build your own Fab@Home for about $2,300 worth of off-the-shelf parts. The prototype, designed by Evan Malone, a Ph.D. candidate in Lipson's Computational Synthesis Laboratory, is slower than the commercial models, and its resolution, or ability or produce fine detail, is lower, but people are finding practical -- and often unexpected -- uses for it.

JavaJones, yes i did some tests with a proxomitron filter that time pageloads, host file definitely improves surfing speed.

For all the broadband people with newer pc's, this really isn't as noticeable as it is to someone with say...a 33.6k dialup connection and a slower pc.

I can tell you from experience that a huge hosts file doesn't speed up page loading.

Why?

Your pc has to scan through that whole file with every connection your pc makes to see if the domain is listed in there, first. This takes extra time.

The more domains you have to connect to for ads on a page, the more it has to scan that hosts file, the longer it takes to fail to load the ads. (But it even makes loading pages without ads take longer since you still have to go through that hosts file first)

The more entries you have in the host file, the longer it takes to scan that file.

So the hosts file option can backfire and not give you speed and actually slow you down.

If you don't believe me, try it with an 18,000+ line hosts file on a 233mhz machine on 33.6k dialup and compare speeds with & without. You won't even need a stopwatch. That's how noticeable it is.

how can i add a range of ports in Windows Firewall? i need to do this for torrent downloads and there is no option to add more than one port at a time..

Rather than adding a range of ports, add the torrent application by clicking the 'add program' button instead. Then everything will work fine.  :)

I can understand why you would hesitate installing it on your current machine. I was pretty hesitant to install it on my P1, 233mhz, 64mb ram, WinME.

But I finally did because I needed it for some things I really wanted to run.

Here are my observations and tips from that slow machine with both .net 1.1 and 2.0:

Some .net applications will slow down your whole system when they are starting up and they can take considerably longer to start, but once they get going, they are just as fast as any other application.

Sometimes if you are running quite a bit of stuff, when starting a .net application, it can put you dangerously low on resources and cause your pc to lock up. If you have an application like that, close some stuff...as much as you can, run the .net application, and then open the other stuff back up once it gets going. (same thing applies if you run a .net application and the window is full of black areas or missing parts)

I have had better luck running .net applications than most java ones. Java can be a killer on an old pc from application start to close...but .net is only a killer when starting them.

On an old machine like yours (and my dinosaur) I don't think I would have installed IE 7...I would definitely stick with IE 6. (there is no IE 7 for the OS I run on mine, so it's not even anything for me to consider)

If you are so hungry for the tabs you get with IE 7, you could use either Opera or Firefox and have them, and not have to deal with as much of a slowdown as you do with IE 7 & .net combination. I ran Firefox on my old machine just fine when I wanted to do some serious surfing...and ran a tiny little no frills browser for opening a quick single page, the rest of the time.

You could wait and get a better pc before enjoying .net applications, or you can take my tips and attempt to enjoy them now. The choice is yours, but you will find that the longer you wait to get a new pc, the harder it is going to be to avoid installing .net.

can try save as html in Excel.

You have any idea what that code looks like? It's a mess. Possibly worse than OOo. :o

It wouldn't make it easier and most likely would make it more difficult.

I have been giving it a lot of thought today and I have come up with a lot of ideas for it.

I just have a few more things to consider and I will decide if I want try to do this or not.

Btw...this wouldn't just be for browsers...it would be for everything.  :)

And the user will be unavoidably aware that it is running and what it is doing.

If I do this, there will be a small, yet highly visible window that always stays on top and can't be minimized or leave the screen, announcing what it is and if it's active.

if you replace every "," with this:

[/td][td]

and then manually edited and ended every line, except the last, with this:

[/td][/tr][tr][td]

added this before first line:

[tr][td]

and this after last line:

[/tr][/td]

and inserted the whole thing between this:

[table]
[/table]

It might work...but that's still a lot of manual editing.  :(

You have come up with an ethical use for a keylogger...the first I have ever seen. I never thought about it this way before.

You have given me an idea though...let's see what it eventually turns into, if anything. No promises...no time estimates. If I am going to do something, I want to do this right...and make sure it stays ethical.

Well I just had a look at the html version as exported from OOo, jeez, what a load of code  :)

Tried stripping out some stuff (find, replace)
but definitely starting to think this might be more work than it's worth

Nope that's definitely beyond my capabilities ...

You just discovered why I said not to do that.  ;D

When you say "First you would have to convert it to html ... in an html editor"
Would i have to go back to school to figure that one out ?  :tellme:  :D
Would it be a very time consuming process?

There are WYSIWYG html editors where you can create a table as easily as painting in MS Paint.

Recreate the table in one of those and copy & paste the data from the spreadsheet into the boxes.

Then you go through and make sure you remove all that extra stuff from the code, like I mentioned before.

Like I said, it can be hell.  :-[

I think what we need around here is a WYSIWYG forum post editor for creating the bbcode. Then you wouldn't have to create a spreadsheet and go through all this. You could create it in the editor instead.

Try opening them in notepad to see if they contain html data.

Converting spreadsheets to something you can post here can be hell.  :(

First you would have to convert it to html, somehow. That is best done manually or in an html editor, as it is the only way it will look good. Using the 'export as html' option can have some bad results.

Make sure it is stripped of all extra code that is unnecessary, such as font sizes & colors, table & cell width info, etc.

Then you would have to do a find & replace of all the <'s with ['s and then all the >'s with ]'s

I find this alarming:

SNAG-0374.png
Source: http://www.pctools.c...Trojan.Dropper.DuDu/

Note:
Softpedia guarantees that Orbit 1.0.0.2 is 100% CLEAN, which means it does not contain any form of malware, including but not limited to: spyware, viruses, trojans and backdoors. But right after install Orbit is trying to connect to DuDu.com (chinese website) and scanning with Ad-Aware SE Professional the things are getting worst :

- Adware.DuDu * 3 objects
- Adware.DesktopMedia * 1 object

So try this at your own risk, can be just fp or not.
Source: http://www.neowin.ne...php?showtopic=511043

Ya, Orbit 1.0.0.1 right after install is trying to connect to DUDU.COM
:

Name: Adware.DuDu

TAC Rating: 4

Category: Adware

Description:
Adware.DuDu is a Chinese application that shows advertising while
browsing with Internet Explorer. It is part of a bundled install and
installs without user consent. There is also an English version of this
application.
Source: http://groups.google...f7b03e0?dmode=source

Well, according to the support team, Orbitnet.exe (which is the p2p backend used to help speed up downloads) connects to a bunch of servers so it can be ready to help with the speeding up of them. Some of the servers it uses are in a subnet range with causes some Anti-Spyware programs to think that its communicating with DUDU.com (even though it isn't doing anything harmful).
Source: https://www.donation...92.msg43249#msg43249

and this:

SNAG-0373.png
DUDU-INC.COM???!!

<sarcasm>
Oh, no...of course not...they aren't related to dudu in any way shape or form...they just by accident share the same IP block.
</sarcasm>

Sorry...I am not buying the bull, not after all the other deceptions and unethical practices, and lying.

Take a risk with your own pc if you want...trust them if you want...but I won't.

By user we mean any schlub with network access or oversight who manages a brain fart loud enough to halt the network, compromise it, or in some other way cause harm to the enterprise, and thus the company's bottom line. Something that means at the very least a red face for several days, possibly a secret beating and swirlie administered by other employees in a darkened bathroom, even a Trumpesque directive to explore the outside world for the rest of one’s life.

Trick No. 1: Poor purchasing oversight
Trick No. 2: Yet another cleaning lady story
Trick No. 3: Figureheads can hurt you
Trick No. 4: Locked datacenter?! Well, let me get that for you
Trick No. 5: Green is great unless it’s due to nausea
Trick No. 6: Don't bail on e-mail
Trick No. 7: A truck load of Murphy
Trick No. 8: Cruel and unusual
Trick No. 9: One plan to rule them all

Back in the day, switching to Linux meant that you had better be ready to tweak a few lines of code and compile your own drivers. Times have changed, however, and newer, more user-friendly Linux distros like Ubuntu are even moving in on consumer markets like cell phones and UMPCs.

So if you've been sitting on the fence up until this point, waiting for the right moment to make the switch, now may be the time. The good folks at Maximum PC have put together an extensive guide that walks you through the entire process, from the first boot to running Windows inside Linux using Parallels and dual-booting. It's a well put together guide and comes highly recommended for neophytes looking to take a walk on the open-source side of operating systems.
