You could just wear a pair of sunglasses or get a real filter for your screen, rather than trying to make a homemade one.

I used to have one of these way back when I was using a 15" CRT. It took me awhile to adjust to life without one when I moved up to a larger CRT monitor that it wouldn't fit on.

I am beginning to wonder if I should start saving my money and buy one for this LCD. It's been over a year and I still haven't been able to get used to the difference between a CRT and LCD.

And these were taken from my free programming ebooks site:

All of these should be a big help with getting started. Don't forget to take a look at my ebooks site too. Lots of C++ books available for free.

I heard about this yesterday from Martin, in my chatroom. I thought his description was hilarious, but seeing the actual video is great.  ;D

You're right, the license plate is the icing on the cake!

I have tried to read what it says over & over and I still can't make it out. (it's a blur)  :(

I don't know about anybody else's, but mine sure is.  :P

I'm in Australia.  I would have to fly to the US.  Not that that is out of the question.  I would love to visit the US.  The main problem is money.

mouser says nobody is allowed to miss it, so you will have to be there. Start saving up for the trip now.  :D

He should come take a look at my windows boxes...they loaded with free software...of all kinds.

And he should pay a visit here, too.

« Last post by app103 on May 19, 2007, 06:14 PM »
cmpm was just sharing his experiences with both IE 7 and Firefox.

Based on his thoughts, feelings, and experiences with both, he came to some conclusions about both applications. They both have their good points and bad points.

He discovered that he has a use for both, but neither browser is perfect enough for him to become the only browser he uses for everything.

I see nothing wrong with this.

He is happy with his decision to use both browsers for the things he feels they are best at.

I see nothing wrong with this either.

There were some suggestions offered about alternatives that might possibly make one or the other browser be the browser that does it all.

Nothing wrong with that either.

But cmpm decided he doesn't want to try some of the suggestion because he has some concerns about them.

There is nothing wrong with this either. It is his pc and he can avoid any software he chooses in order to keep his system safe. He can base his decision on a gut feeling...or even 'voodoo magic' if he chooses. If he decides he doesn't want to take the risk, that is his right. If it turns out he was correct, his system is safe. And even if he is wrong, his system is still safe.

He doesn't have to prove anything to anybody to have the right NOT to install some application. Attacking him for exercising that right doesn't help anybody.

Personally, I have 5 browsers that I use for various purposes. Not 1 of them can be my browser that does everything. No matter what suggestions anyone makes, that isn't going to change.

Nothing I can add to Firefox is going to make it handle rss feeds exactly like AOLex. And nothing I could add to IE is going to make it as good at doing the things I use Firefox for. And nothing I could add to any of the other browsers is going to make it as good at organizing tabs into groups as opera is in true MDI mode. And nothing I could add to any of them is going to make them open as fast as AOLex. And nothing I could add to any of them is going to duplicate Crystalport's custom channels feature, exactly.

And sometimes even if the same functionality can be duplicated, it doesn't matter...because it doesn't look exactly the same. And maybe...just maybe...I like looking at it because I think it's pretty.

There is no one-size-fits-all in software. And this is a good thing. It means that there are many things to choose from and many more applications will come along in the future to play with.

So there is no sense fighting because someone doesn't want to use the same software as you. One should not have to defend their choice not to duplicate your system on theirs.

So let's stop the bickering and get back to doing what it is that we all enjoy, which for me right now happens to be baking some pumpkin bread.  :-*

Maybe by allowing us experts to change the RSS feed the notifications are based on? (don't know if that would work)

Yes that won't be too hard. Lemme see what I can do.  :)

If you do this, would that mean that the popups would work with any smf forum's feed and not just DC's? (I know the extras would still be based on DC's forum)

How possible would it be to have more than 1 feed url? That way you could keep an eye on just the sections you want on DC's forum...or keep an eye on everything from DC and another smf forum.

(I am just thinking of ways this could be useful outside of DC and have a wider appeal.)

Maybe this is something you could think about for the pro version.

General Software Discussion / Re: How to restore dual boot
« Last post by app103 on May 19, 2007, 05:53 AM »
If you have PartitionMagic, it comes with something called BootMagic. It will present you with a list of OS's that are found on your system and give you the choice of which to load.

My dad used it when he had 2k, xp, and ME installed on the same machine.

I don't know if any of the free boot managers that linux users use will be any good for this, so I can't give any advice on them or even say which are any good.

Someone here with more experience with those could probably tell you which would work and be best.

General Software Discussion / Re: Web Mail Recommendation?
« Last post by app103 on May 18, 2007, 03:48 AM »
Speaking of ads...

When you send an email from your Yahoo account, they tack ads to the end of it. The receiver sees these ads...same with Hotmail.  :-[

Gmail...they don't put ads in the mails you send out. The only ads seen are by the Gmail account holder, in the right side panel, if you use the webmail...not in the emails themselves....and not seen at all if you use Gmail with POP access.

Something to think about. Do you want to send people email + ads? or just email?

Something else I remember about Hotmail and Yahoo...they spam you with ads. It's not enough that they are tacking ads onto everything you send out, they have to send you mail to your inbox full of ads too. I don't get extra crap to delete from Google like I did from Yahoo & Hotmail.

I have been a Gmail user since the very beginning (invited by Google).

I love it!   :-*

You can use the webmail...or pop3 with any mail client. (I prefer the webmail)

I also used to be a Yahoo mail user. I never was crazy about it.

What you can do is let her try Gmail. If she doesn't like it, get her a Yahoo account and set up forwarding from the Gmail one to the Yahoo account so she won't lose anything coming in or have to log into 2 accounts to get her mail. I don't think Yahoo has automatic mail forwarding, but Gmail does.

I do not think you can be logged in with the translation page.

Open 2 pages:

Use the translated one as a guide to what the buttons say.

Living Room / Re: Odd problem with System Restore ... anyone any ideas?
« Last post by app103 on May 16, 2007, 07:35 AM »
I just deleted the whole folder...not just the files in it.

If you have system restore turned off, there are no consequences when you delete them, they are just gone and not taking up valuable space any more.

If you have it turned on, it will just recreate the folder again.

Edit: I have also deleted WinME's _Restore folder under XP on same drives.

I am not sure what file system you have on that drive, but this is one of those times that FAT32 and having an old 9x machine comes in handy. You would be able to delete them under 9x if it's not NTFS.

I have done it before.

Other than that the only suggestions I can come up with is this:

  • Pop that drive in and create some files for 'temporary use'.
  • Then turn on system restore and reboot.
  • Create a restore point.
  • Then delete the 'temporary' files and clear them from recycle bin.
  • Then turn it off system restore again and reboot.

Or you can try a BartPE disk or Knoppix (or any other live CD linux distro that supports NTFS) to access that drive outside of windows.

Might get rid of it for you.

Sun has come up with a contest targeting developers that involves an Indiana Jones style flash adventure game and their Sun Studio product.

The first 5 rounds are played in the flash game, at which point you are asked to register. The player can request an installation DVD containing Solaris Express, Developer Edition, which includes Sun Studio software or they can just download Sun Studio.

This will be required to continue the game.

You will be allowed to leave the game till this is installed.

When the player returns to the game, the player will be presented with several lines of C++ code and will be asked to copy that code into Sun Studio software and compile it. Compiling the code will create an executable file on the player’s computer. When this file is executed, a message is displayed on the player’s computer. This message is to be typed into the game to proceed to the final level.

After the final level, your total score will be submitted. The player with the highest score when the contest ends will win the grand prize of $5000.

Prize list:
  • 1 st Place : $5,000USD
  • 2 nd Place : $2,500USD
  • 3 rd Place : $1,000USD.
  • The next 100 highest scores will receive 1GB Flash Drive ($20USD approx. value).

Contest ends ends at 11:59 P.M. (PT) on 6/19/2007 which is 6:59 A.M. (GMT) on 6/20/2007.

Contest open to residents of Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland , Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

I have a small feature request:

It would be nice if when you hover over links within a post that you could have a tooltip with the url it leads to.

Without a statusbar to show this, I have no idea where they go.
