Living Room / Re: Recommend to me the BEST USB stick to get
« Last post by superboyac on May 29, 2009, 12:53 PM »
Quick update:

I bought myself the kingmax tiny usb (that i mentioned here) to put on my keyring.  After a couple of weeks the part that attaches to the keyring is breaking and threatening to fall off.  This is my 2nd attempt to find a tiny keyring usb, so it's back to the drawing board.  Just wanted to warn others looking for same thing as me.  I think next i'll try the Pico-C gold that superboy mentioned here.
Good choice.  This Pico-C is awesome.  It's all metal and very rugged for something that is an electronic device.  Like I said, it was in my parents' driveway for 2 days.  Cars may have even driven over it, who knows (probably not).  It's very rugged.  Unless you somehow hammer the actual little contacts, this should last a long time.

Nuance is cool.  Very fast.  Bluebeam is not as fast as Nuance.  Overall, Nuance is fairly similar in layout and feel to Acrobat.  The great thing about it is that the controls, buttons, panels, etc. are a lot better laid out than Acrobat, which sucks at all of that.  So everything is very accessible and easy to use.  Like I said, it's FAST.

Where Bluebeam has the edge relative to every other PDF editor is the additional features that are simply not available anywhere else.  Nuance is like Acrobat, only better.  Bluebeam is not like Acrobat.  The dialogs, properties, layout is totally different.  There are some overlapping features between Nuance and Bluebeam, such as the ability to use panels along the edges, which I love.

There's a lot to Bluebeam.  I should do a full review of it on my website here.  In my opinion, Bluebeam is the most ambitious of all the Acrobat alternatives that I've seen.  I might also lean towards it because it is geared for the CAD industry, although I think anyone who ventures beyond simple pdf creation and commenting, etc., should seriously consider Bluebeam.

Nuance looks cool, also.  never heard of it either!  Nice one.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but it reminded me of another thread I started (no replies :():

Anyway, for under $200 you get a full featured PDF editor.  It's not as simple and fast as Infix for plain text stuff, but overall, it is probably the greatest PDF editor on earth.  If you do a lot of editing on PDF's that is not just text, but a bunch of other things, this is the program to get.  I love this program, it is amazing.  And nobody EVER talks about it!  That's why i'm such a fanboy here for it.

But Infix is pretty cool.  Very fast, very simple.  And yes, I LOVE the approach it takes for text editing in PDF's.  And I've never heard about it before!  Man, these PDF editors just come out of nowhere!

Cool!  Keep it up.  I love the passion.  I love TC also.  One of the first "poweruser" programs I started with back in the day.

General Software Discussion / Re: The Best Of: text editors
« Last post by superboyac on May 28, 2009, 02:12 AM »
Very often, I see text editors advertised as being able to handle huge files (100+ Mb) and people commenting that they work on those incredibly large files. It boggles my mind and I wonder what kind of files are you working on that are so hefty? That's equivalent to 50,000 pages or more of text. Is the capability of editing 100's of megabytes all that common as a requirement for a text editor?
Yeah, I also wonder the same thing.  (No offense to anyone, i swear!) but sometimes I think it's one of those things where people pick one really minor issue about a program and just get totally hung up on it.  I know I catch myself doing that sometimes.

Great job, Innuendo!  I love AntiSpam Sniper also, I have used it ever since I got the Bat!
4535
fixed but not yet uploaded; will be in next update.
yeah!  you work fast, my friend.
4536
just tested it -- batch mode worked perfectly for me.
did you notice that with batch mode you can click EITHER on the button itself (launches batch of all children) or the tiny arrow sliver of the dropdown to choose one to launch?
If I use the arrow to pick one program, it works.  if I use the button for batch, it doesn't work.  Are you sure it works for you when the programs are links to other nodes, and not the actual node itself?
4537
I set up what you showed above, but it doesn't do anything.  I made a batch button.  In the submenu of the button, I made link nodes to the programs I wish to launch with the button.  I click the button after it's setup, and nothing happens.

If I click the links separately, they work fine.  But the batch button does nothing.

General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?

Woo hoo!  Good to hear from you Pierre.  I know you've been working hard on the program.  I hope all is well.

I'm trying to find a quick way to close all my USB programs before pulling the stick out.  Skrommel's CloseMany program can do this.  I'd like to suggest a way to make the list that shows all the programs and running processes to only show the ones you want to close.  I know that this is probably impossible to do automatically.  So, maybe there's a way that the user can create a custom list or filter that only shows programs that the user wants to close.  I know for myself, I always close the same programs off my USB stick, so I can just (for example) drag those processes into the list and save that list.  Now, whenever I want to close those programs, I just select that list and say "Close All".  That would be easier than going through the entire list and ctrl-clicking each one one by one.

Interesting...my post from a couple days ago didn't show up...

I lost my gold pico-c usb drive Thursday night.  That's what I posted to say.  It didn't take long.

But just now, I found it!  I dropped it on the driveway of my parents' house.  The thing is so darn small, and it apparently got loose off my keychain clasp, which is hard to do.  Anyway, good news.  Time to back up and get a new keychain.
4541
Thanks for the explanation, alxwz.  That makes it very clear.
4542
OK, cool, thanks.  i will set that up.

LaunchBar Commander / Bug: tray context menu instability
« Last post by superboyac on May 21, 2009, 06:10 PM »
Sometimes, the right-click context menu from the tray is finicky.  To replicate this, do this (Win XP Pro):

--place a window right above the system tray where the menu will pop-up.
--minimize and undock your launchbar so the only way to access it is with the tray icon
--right-click the tray icon, go to preferences.
--make some negligible change, then close the preferences.
--Now, try right-clicking on the tray again.  The menu will flicker, but you'll have a hard time selecting anything because it doesn't stay open.

This happens 100% on my work computer.  To recover, I either need to exit/restart.  Or open the full menu, then minimize to tray again.

In LBC, is it possible to launch multiple programs at once?  Also, closing multiple programs at once (although this may need to be another kind of program; please recommend).  I know we can use bat files, but in portable mode, the program needs to be able to keep track of the changing drive letters, which LBC can do, bat files can't.

Maybe there is another software out there that does this.  If so, please advise, and I can use that program in my launchbar.  I was wondering if LBC can do this itself.

There are many possibilities why they might be responding the way they are
a. There might be no real process for procurement and that might need to be solved
b. Perhaps the manager's verbal ok isn't enough, and they have to go through a procurement process
c. They might be overloaded and not have time for each request
d. They might be lazy and don't want to do request
etc, etc

The point is, everyone is jumping on your IS team when there might be good reasons or might not- but IS is not the enemy in general, just people trying to do their job the best way they know how.  Perhaps if you could work with them and find out what might make them more open to using the product they might cooperate?
Trust me, i know these guys very well.  The answer is d.  i won't get into it, but there's just no other possibility.

I have no problem with the policies.  What I have a problem is this:  I am hired to do a job.  I need certain tools that I know for a fact make my job more productive.  My management, who also manages IT, supports all my requests.  The IT, instead of responsibly considering my request, automatically give excuse after excuse why such little programs are a problem.  They spew a lot of technical mumbo-jumbo out there to confuse the higher ups.  but, fortunately, i probably know way more about this stuff than them, it's all BS.   Frankly, it's either a power-trip or laziness.  The point is that I need this software, and their job is to get it as long as it is approved by management and doesn't cause a specific problem.  Just because they don't want a little extra work (which there should be barely any if they cut the BS) doesn't mean you prevent the request from getting through.  bottom line is that I'm asking for it, it's your job to get it.  Don't give me a hard time about it, and if you plan to, you better have a good reason for it.

Someone asked for a package that did some kind of technical analysis a while back.  The IT guy gave some straight up bullshit that because the program was written using SQL or something like that, we need an actual several-thousand dollar SQL server license.  That's bullshit.  The only license we need is the one to buy the program, it doesn't matter what the author used to write the program.  So, get it, install it, and go away.  If we do in fact need a sql license or whatever, well, then get that as well, there's no shortage of money here.  The point is, the analysis needs to be done, it's your job to make it work on the computer.  Don't give me any nonsense about it.

Yes, they did have Evernote Plus 2.2 for $49.95 back in October 2007. Don't know if there was a portable version though.

Jim
Shoot, I titled this thread incorrectly.  Yes, I meant if the portable version also came in a PLus.  I had the regular Plus version.  I'm not a big fan of 3.0, but that's another discussion.  I'll keep using 2.2 until it breaks.
4548
I used to use Evernote Plus.  Did the "Plus" version ever come in a portable version also?  Anyone remember?

Office Space is such a great flick.

all of my programs use INI files that you can simply copy from the program directory (or replace)*; though there are a couple of cases where there is an additional settings file.  but regardless, they all use files to store settings, so import and export is not critical in my mind because it can be done manually.

*Clipboard Help+Spell uses a database file for efficiency.  While CHS includes a backup+restore function, i really do want to add an xml export function for easy of transfer.
by default, all these ini files are in the Program Directory, right?  So, unless I specifically change it, you don't add any files to Application Data or anything?  i don't see any.
