I like Aero, too. I don't love it, but in general I do like it. I also like XP's "Fisherprice" theme.

Hi Fight4FOI.

This is one of the potential problems of crowd-sourced ratings. It doesn't matter what the facts are. Anybody can give the site a rating using WOT. Some people will use this ability as a weapon to mark sites they disagree with as being "bad" in an effort to censor/silence opposition.

Interestingly, this site is marked as untrustworthy (all 4 red flags) by WOT. Hmm... :-\

How do you do that? I haven't messed with border thickness settings before, but when I go into the settings it's already at 1, and it still seems to be pretty thick.

It's not really fair to use a certain operating system your whole life (Windows) and then try out a different one that functions on different paradigms (Debian/Ubuntu) for a few hours and then say this new one is stupid/useless/whatever simply because you can't figure it out.

What you are experiencing is probably what your mom/grandma feels like any time she uses her computer! Spend time with it. Learn how to do the things you want to do with it, in the way it is done on that OS. Then, once it's not your personal knowledge/skill with the OS that is holding you back, but actually the OS itself, you can make a more qualified judgement on whether or not the OS is stupid/useless/whatever.

I recently read a "blog entry" by an Apple user who tried out Windows 7 and thought it was the most useless OS ever, simply because he couldn't figure things out, and his go-to Windows expert apparently wasn't expert enough to know about setting Environment Variables. It's really painful to read knowing that the guy is condemning the entire OS based on some very fundamental, beginner's mistakes. And he's a pretty smart guy. He just has been using a different paradigm (Apple OSes) for years and years and years and doesn't know how to do things the Microsoft way.

If you're interested, you can read it here: My Adventures with Windows 7.

You just need to learn what the Debian version of ctrl-shift-esc is.

Try opening the Software Center thingy (in Ubuntu) and searching for Task Manager or Process Manager or something.

You jump from the ledge to a Portal on the floor and as you emerge from the Portal up on the edge of the ledge you move sideways to drop down through the hole on the floor again - each round gives you more height - repeat until you can get to the high ledge. This was the reason I called it flying about!
-Carol Haynes (May 20, 2012, 03:41 AM)

I tried that, except I didn't think to attempt it sideways. Going "forwards" or "backwards" makes you lose your momentum and you can't travel far enough to get much beyond the borders of the portal you came out of. But going sideways works really well. Too well, sometimes. :)

How much for one copy through the 4-pack?

Try sending a PM to p3lb0x, since he's the one with the 4-pack. But I think the answer is $15. ($60 / 4)

Somebody on the Steam forums asked if they should buy Diablo 3 or Torchlight 2. This is their question and my response:

I've never played a Diablo game in my life (gasp) and the new game seems to be a success, so hey, why not try out the latest title in one of the most popular PC franchises of all time?

However, I've put 70 hours on the original Torchlight...liked everything about it, but got boring for me.

It's summer and I would like to spend some time outdoors, so I only have room for one game.

T2 or D3?

Cliffs:

- Never played Diablo
- Really liked Torchlight
- Don't want to buy both

This article may be helpful:

5 Reasons Torchlight 2 is a Better Bang for your Buck than Diablo 3

I'd like to reiterate the points that Simian_ made, including the fact that you can actually get a 4-pack of Torchlight 2 (which comes with 4 copies of Torchlight 1) so you and 3 friends can enjoy playing together, for the same price as Diablo 3.

I played the beta of Diablo 3 and while I enjoyed it, it was different enough from Diablo 2 to make me wonder how fun it would be in the long term. I'm talking mostly about character/skill progression. It felt too limited to me. Too controlling of what skills I would use, when I would use them, and how powerful they would be. As I said: I enjoyed playing the Diablo 3 beta but it made me wonder how much I'd enjoy it in a full playthrough.

I've also played the beta of Torchlight 2, and I really, really like it.

To be honest, I didn't really enjoy Torchlight 1. I just couldn't get into it because of the lack of multiplayer. The hacking and slashing and acquisition of shiny new loot didn't appeal to me if I couldn't share the experiences and show off my cool new equipment with my friends. But Torchlight 2 fixes that, and also fixes some of my other big complaints about TL1--such as the game pausing and making you click a dialog box (in the middle of a boss fight, for example) so you can acknowledge that your pet returned from town with some money. That, to me, was totally unnecessary and immersion breaking. It completely interrupted the flow of gameplay. But that's been fixed in TL2.

Anyway, in my opinion, TL2 is much more like Diablo 2 in terms of gameplay and fun (which is a good thing!) than Diablo 3 is. Having been a fan of the Diablo series and not really being a fan of Torchlight 1, I would recommend to my friends to go for TL2 over Diablo 3 if they had to choose.

Oh dear - sorry! The intention of the game was to get you jumping through Portals to gain height to get onto the ledge on the left as you walk in - once up there the rest of the puzzle layout is pretty obvious. I though it would be clear that you had to get onto the ledge because you can actually do anything else in that part of the chamber. Also there are blue indicator lines up there showing you that is how you get the ball and cube to drop.
-Carol Haynes (May 19, 2012, 04:35 AM)

Update - Deozaan edited the room to hopefully make it much clearer that you need to look up (unfortunately the new puzzle maker doesn't have simple things like signs that you can use so I have used line of lights to draw the eye upwards).

I have fixed a potential cheat for gaining the high ground and also reorganised a few parts of the puzzle to make it clearer which devices get dropped and turned off by which switches.

Can you do me a favour and have one more look and see if it is a bit clearer.
-Carol Haynes (May 19, 2012, 04:24 PM)

Okay, well, now that you fixed the cheat, I can't figure out how to solve it. :-/ I just can't get enough height. I tried jumping from the first ledge down to the floor, but that doesn't get me high enough. And I don't keep enough momentum to jump down into a portal which takes me back up to the ledge, flying off the ledge again back down again into the portal for extra height. And there's no higher ledge I can jump off of on the other side of the lasers. So yeah, it looks like I only ever solved it in the first place because I found the cheat.

I'm stumped. :'( :-[

the devs are holding a stress test beta from May 18th-22nd.. click here for info on signing up for this weekend beta!

Note that even though it's called a "weekend" beta, it actually lasts until sometime on Tuesday. I think I just signed up for the beta on the 15 and I got accepted to this weekend beta, so chances seem pretty good that if you sign up you'll get in.

I tried your Flying About map.

I didn't particularly care for it. I think the reason was because normally in Portal Test Chambers you are able to see what your goal is. But in Flying About, everything I wanted to reach was way up high and out of sight, which made me assume that it wasn't important until I was able to get somewhere or do something that brought it within sight.

After "flying about" for 15 minutes or so trying to figure out what to do, I just got frustrated. I saw the power indicators but I had no idea how to activate any of them. And maybe I just haven't played enough Portal 2 lately, but seeing non-activated, round, metal devices on the wall doesn't help me know what those things are or what they do, or why I should try to activate them, or even how to activate them for that matter.

Finally I noticed some white wall way up high behind a glass wall, but what I actually noticed was that I could just barely see some of the wall that wasn't behind the glass wall, and if I jumped and shot the portal gun at it while in the air, I could hit it. I actually felt like I was cheating. Was this section of the wall supposed to be accessible from just standing around? Shouldn't I be "flying about" somehow to get up there? Later I realized it would be even easier to shoot that wall if I had been "flying about" from a certain position. But the layout of the level was such that nothing made me look the way I was supposed to look.

If you've ever played Valve games with the commentary on, you may have heard them talk about how players almost never look up, and you have to give them a reason to look up. (Come to think of it, I think it was the Half Life 2: Lost Coast Demo that specifically mentioned this.)

Almost immediately upon entering the test chamber I went to the place where I was supposed to look and "fly about" and see that patch of wall way up high, but there was something else that drew my attention away toward the opposite direction: A black section on the wall. This was curious to me because I hadn't seen it before. Everything else was grey or white. So I was busy trying to figure out what this black section of the wall was. After spending a minute or so trying to get into it or activate it somehow I decided I'd have to activate it from the other side of the lasers. So then my attention was turned to that. And as I said, that led to several minutes of me flying about trying to figure out what all those mechanical devices were for or how to activate them and wondering what was up on the shelf way up high by the acid or slime or whatever it is.

When I finally saw the patch of white wall behind the glass--or more accurately the patch of white wall that wasn't behind the glass--the puzzle was fairly straightforward and easy. I just needed to have an idea of where to begin.

But then again, had that been obvious from the beginning, the puzzle would have been solved in just a couple of minutes and may have seemed too easy.

At the end of it all, I was just too frustrated to want to try the Labyrinthine Treasure Hunt, especially after reading the description. It sounds too laborious and not enough fun, crazy, portal physics, action-y stuff.

So there's my review of Flying About.

Here's the nag-screen:
 (see attachment in previous post)
Even though my SpiderOak usage bar shows this:

 (see attachment in previous post)

Did you ever get this sorted out? I recently ran into a similar problem where a junction was created in one of my backup folders, and the junction folder had many large files in it which took me over my limit. I started seeing the same nag screen you posted above. So I went into my View tab and deleted the extra files I didn't want backed up, but for the past week SpiderOak would not synchronize the changes with the server. So on the SpiderOak site it said I was still over my limit, and on the client it said I was only at about 25% of my limit.

SpiderOak is stupid and always tries to process the Queue in order. So it was still trying to backup a bunch of files that I had since removed from the backup configuration. But it wouldn't back them up because I was over my limit. And the act of me removing them from my backups was placed in the Queue--AFTER the action to finish backing up more stuff--so it never removed them from the list.

So what you have to do is shut down SpiderOak, clear the queue, then start it up again and hope you can remove the extra files from your account before it queues up more backups. The details on how to do this are outlined here:

https://spideroak.co...ading_what_can_i_do/

Why they don't give you the option to remove items from the Queue within the client is beyond me. It's kind of stupid, actually.

It does on mine too - but then it doesn't seem to start with Windows without me putting the shortcut into the Startup folder.

I guess I checked the box for "Start DNSScrypt when Windows starts" or something similar? It's in the Startup folder for me, and I know I didn't put it there after installation.

You could just have said that Aptana is in fact a customized release of Eclipse 3.x...

Is it? That's weird. I think I've used Aptana before and liked it a lot for JS. But I've also used Eclipse before and didn't like it very much.

I noticed one big problem with DNSCrypt: When I restart my computer, it requires admin permissions via UAC before it will run. This means that if I'm not there to click OK and grant permissions, then my computer can't connect to the internet.
