Living Room / Re: PocketPC or Palm?
« Last post by Grorgy on October 12, 2007, 09:02 PM »
do you really need a computer for that?? sometimes the best solution is a notebook (paper)

Just a thought, of course I'd like one too lol

i found it really annoying and intrusive, like all the spell checkers and things like that i've tried but then thats just me, each to their own.  FARR for launching internal spell checkers, if i need it boilerplate text off the clipboard, ahhh the keep it simple principle.

I'm frequently on a dialup connection and when at home I have a satellite connection at 512 and 64.  It is both expensive and limited to the amount of downloads I can make before it reduces to 64 / 64 .  So data transfer and so on does become a bit of an issue and little bits do add up rather fast ive discovered.  So until that improves on line apps are not really an option

General Software Discussion / Re: What does software 'maintenance' inlcude?
« Last post by Grorgy on October 11, 2007, 05:22 PM »
Again as a user, and when I used to be involved in the development of packages, maintenance was always in the contract, but usually covered making sure that the package performed as the specifications said it would, changes that occurred later through a change request process were separately covered by a new agreement or on a fee for service basis.  So I've seen the ones thst Darwin mentions above as well as the larger versions where development cost was in the 100s of millions.  So its a slippery term that needs defining by you as the developer, if its shareware type app or with your individual customer if you have customized software built just for them.

would seem to me that scancode may have just had that waiting for such an opportunity, i notice under his name it says "I will eat cody one day"  definitely a fixation there  ;D

Yeah, I'm with Tekzel on the multi processor bit, that would be good.  I have to admit i dont really care what it looks like as i never look at it  :-[, it sits around and does its stuff quietly.  I watched it tame for a while till the novelty wore off and I could see it was working, now all i do is sometimes tweak a program or 2 or slightly change the cut in setting.

I'd hate to see it grow into something that will itself need taming tho.

Best Dialog Extender / Re: Enhanced File Dialog
« Last post by Grorgy on October 09, 2007, 07:22 PM »
my preference is for the dark plain look, and then just change wallpaper if i get tired of it, and XP just wouldnt come to the party on that silver? blaahhhh  and i've never been able to stand classic for long.

Major trouble with it all is there are just sooooo many bad skins out there and to find one that works properly and lets you see all the text and so on is a bit of a challenge, best left to holiday times if you got nothing better to do.

By the way i seem to have succeeded in getting the enhanced dialog working on my laptop, but not so far on my desk machine, will try it again next weekend.

Edit
Just remembered file ex caused word2003 to hang on me when i tried to insert a break soooo i dumped it to lol

« Last post by Grorgy on October 09, 2007, 07:03 PM »
I've never had any trouble with Stardocks Icon packager, It seems to work OK with stylexp, when I tried stylexp, icons were about the only thing i seemed to get right  :-[  anyway if you head to www.wincustomize.com you will find a lot of icon packages and so on there.  Also a browse through deviant Art could be wotyhwhile, they have a lot, and with other programs to apply them.  have fun

Hehehe Darwin I've tried all those things, and all the ones you suggested in another thread a while ago, it just doesn't like me for whatever reason, Carol thinks i'm paranoid, she could be right, but it still doesnt work  ;D

From a user point of view to, its nice to see something being used on a skinned system.  Its frustrating for those of us who do like themes to find programs that ignore it or dont allow the theme to work, or worst of all, wont work with it.

Last i heard we have problems with just having a blank video tape on the premises because it COULD be used to break the law, well stupid laws shouldnt be and arent generally supported, i think at last count there are about 15million households here in Aus with a VCR and I would go so far as to suggest that more than 1/2 have a blank tape, the courts will be busy  ;D

It really gets down to personal preference and if your software affiliations don't  send shivers down the spine at the thought of giving microsoft more money, personally i dont care a lot, i got mine bundled up with office which i needed so i'll use it, it works, it has plugins from other major makers available, cant go to far wrong.  ;)
469
Even just as it is, which is the way I use it, now that I've moved back from thunderbird, its ok, if you have specific things you need to do that have plugins or add ons readily available then it seems to me there is not a lot of options, and given its functionality its resource usage isn't all that bad either

Developer's Corner / Re: Programming 101 Lesson: Don't Purge User Data
« Last post by Grorgy on October 01, 2007, 03:24 AM »
I worked for a telecommunications company and data preservation and the ability to find it was of great importance.  It could not be left on the day to day databases but seperate archive databases with the relevant information were set up.  Depending on the age of the data you were after it could be accessed almost immediately or at worst over night.  Prior to computerization it was all done with microfiche, clumsy, a storage problem of its own, and not hugely secure, but it worked, mostly.

Product information would be another matter but where the customer is still alive and you are dealing with their money it seems incumbent upon the people with the control of these resources to have the data secure.
