General Software Discussion / Re: AdBlock Plus To Not Block All Ads
« Last post by mahesh2k on December 13, 2011, 02:19 PM »
I also see one more issue with adblockplus owners abusing some publishers. For example, what if they start to allow adsense ads on google search page but not on websites of individual publishers. I mean if you find it unethical to block ads on some small guys who survive on ad earning then surely you can't twist things this way to favor big corps. Ghostery is collecting data for Evidon and they're twisting the stuff this way. I don't see the reason why they came up with 'ad choices' opt-out feature, that seems to be leading corp lobby for ad displays.

I run adsense and some other ads on my site and i don't mind if anyone uses ad blocker. As far as adsense ads and other non-target ad networks are concerned they have no clue what type of ads to show on a particular site. For example, my blog is on programming niche, but ads of belly dancer academy was bidding on tech keywords. WTF ?There are also some weird brands bidding on wrong keywords just to get more leads. Many ads like pharma and stuff leaks through adwords on regular basis, It's better to block those ads instead of thinking that you're helping publisher in anyway. Besides that most of the ad network shave publisher earning and advertiser earning with bad traffic and poor performance calculation.

Un-targeted, keyword troll advertisers bid low on keywords and these brands are displayed on many sites. Video and Flash ads are more annoying than contextual but text ads take long time to load in some cases. e.g. Kontera and infolinks take more time to load webpages, so yes blocking them does help especially if you're on low bandwidth plan or on slow internet.

God particle has nothing to do with "concept of god" as far as LHC is concerned . It was named only to simplify the concept of smallest possible particle that could answer some of the questions related to BBT and Singularity (universe formation, which is linked with the theological concept of god) and other puzzles in particle physics. As far as particle physics folks are concerned, I doubt they give any weight to concept of god unless ofcourse if they're heavily brainwashed in camp or Sunday morning meetups. Those who want to believe, find ways to bend the concept of god in their favor irrespective of lack of evidence. That aside, I guess it's the peak at which we can dig particle physics. I don't know if there is anything else left in theory for them to conduct more research in this domain once this stuff finishes.

Ghostery also works on the same idea. They're now part of Evidon, that asks users to opt-out of ads via ghostery. They do pass few ads through the filter thought, especially some of the contextual ads and few text link ads.

It'll take some time for few geeks to come up with yet another extension for ad-blocking and it is needed irrespective of any defense from publisher and media giants. This is because if they start corporate lobbying in ad display programs with these ad blockers then small publishers are surely going to get crushed into this if big publishers and media companies manipulate such ad blockers.

I see one more use of WLC : Capture the URLs from various web pages into clipboards and later add it to WLC for uploading these urls into delicious or similar other sites. This saves time, instead of using browser widgets and bookmark link, this can process large chunk of URLS. I hope this could be possible with extensions.

So a company which got penalized for hosting pharama ads and now under scrutiny for search monopoly in EU says FF is risky ? Hail google.

Paypal recently blocked diaspora foundations donation account too. It took some time for them to get back the account. I just hope that in 2012, more startups come to take people away from the wrath of paypal.

Wraith, that is not a bug or something that is causing it. It's common Forex exchange routine that is going on with payment processors. e.g. If I accept 10EUR in my paypal account then paypal forces me for the currency conversion. They make money in this process too. As per market rates, 1EUR=70bucks(for me) but paypal converts it as per their own rules and make rates something like 1EUR=68bucks and eat the remaining funds. Other than that they also charge few more bucks as a service tax and blah. Nobody notices that but when you're dealing with foreign currency you lose anywhere between 2% to 10% in currency conversion and transaction charges with paypal depending on your country.

Fodder, as per SEOMoz guys yes google is using that data to make search results more personalized and use the blocked sites data for filtering them out of search engines.

As for that add-on on chrome, recent policy changes expect us to share that data with google servers or else they're going to disable that plugin. So basically that add-on and logged in blocking pretty much is under googles control.

If paypal is letting you use GBP for GBP/EUR item purchase then it's working fine as you're in EU zone if i'm not wrong. That's how paypal works for non-us folks. It uses native currency for respective purchases and uses USD for US based shops and services. This change is applied to paypal since second quarter of 2011 for many countries in EU and asia using paypal.

If you can afford the increase in your electric bill or afford to replace your computer more frequently, why not just set aside that amount and donate the real money instead? At least that can be spent in the real world.
That's the problem. You've to move real world money via virtual means using payment processors in order to donate. Not all countries are listed in paypal and amazon and not everyone can get credit card around the world. Some countries have paypal with limited features (atleast that applies in my case) so even if you want to donate you can't without a credit card. I got my credit card this year but was nagged by insurance companies and few other investment firms every week. I gave up on my card because i don't want to get into mess of banks and their affiliates. Without credit card there are no means for me to pay for online stuff. I can however workaround this limitation with alertpay and okpay but there are hassles in it too.

How about Bitcoin ?

I think anyone that sends their users to such a site is selling them up the river for a few pennies. It is just as bad as putting bundled crapware in your installers.
Agree.

Alertpay and Okpay is a good option for those who can't use paypal or amazon. I think mouser should consider them on this site.
