General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 11 Released!
« Last post by Innuendo on March 09, 2014, 09:31 AM »
Personally, I don't really mind the occasional registration check as long as the developers are open about it. I found it more interesting to see how they handle customer support in that thread.

Yes, that thread could be seen as an eye-opener in more than one way. I just wanted to make sure people knew that Directory Opus phoned home when the general belief is that it doesn't. My chosen career path dictates I keep abreast of stuff like this...I'm just glad I didn't have to pull out WireShark & a PowerPoint presentation to make my point.  ;)

My research backs up what the FAQ states. Even if you cut Directory Opus off from the internet completely none of the functionality will be diminished & you won't notice any difference in its operation.

MarkMonitor is the REGISTRAR not the OWNER. Google is the REGISTRANT (Owner)

Then I stand corrected on that. I was wrong, but the question remains why does Directory Opus contact Google when update checks are turned off?

If you won't believe me, perhaps you'll believe Leo and Jon of GPSoft:

http://resource.dopu....php?f=3&t=19856

User: "My licensed copy of Directory Opus phones home no matter what. I had to block it in my firewall!"

GPSoft: "And what problem is it causing you?"

I meant no offense.  I've not noticed the same behaviour.  I have version 9, so perhaps there's a difference in versions.  But I run all of my requests through OpenDNS, and searched through my logs and see no mention of that particular domain.

No offense taken!  :)

You & I have frequented these parts long enough not to take anything the other says personally, I'd hope! I did not test v9 so it indeed may exhibit different behavior.

If you block it from accessing the website with your firewall, or disable the relevant process's access to the web via a policy, does DO stop working?

Like I said when I first mentioned the phoning home, blocking DOpus's access from either or both domains does not impede its operation at all. It will happily function at 100% capacity.

That sounded okay, didn't it? So why is this something you want to talk about, Curt? Well, let me quote myself, but this time the full sentence I didn't quite finish at first: "a few weeks later (a week ago) I received a free license key for MAGIX Photo Graphic Designer 2013 in French!".

When I visit foreign web sites and register for software giveaways I always worry that I'll gain access to a version that will not function in my native language, but my fears have always been unfounded as the credentials provided have always worked with the English version of the software.

Leave it to Curt to prove my fears true!  ;D

Right.  I don't call that "phoning home".  I call that "checking for news and product updates".  Especially since you can easily disable it.

I know the difference between checking for updates and phoning home and I'm here to tell you that the program indeed does phone home. Yes, if you have "checking for news and and product updates" enabled, it will happily check a server located at si-sv2378.com which is a is registered to a company called Server Intellect. They are a webhosting company and where DOpus downloads news & updates from. Turn off the setting in preferences and this server will not be contacted again.

However, regardless whether or not you have that setting enabled, every so often Directory Opus will reach out to a server located at cbf02m01-in-fl121.1e100.net. It appears e100.net is registered to a company called MarkMonitor.com. Browsing there it seems to be a company devoted to brand protection and fighting piracy. Directory Opus phones home there to check for blacklisted serials and such and if relevant information is found then appropriate action is taken.

So I will say again, Directory Opus does phone home regardless of what the user has set in preferences. This behavior may have changed since the release of v11, but this was what occurred with v10.

I would not have stated

For me it would be Directory Opus, as I used it since my Amiga days. Then again, there isn't that much software that jumped (successfully) from one PC eco-system to another, as Directory Opus did.

I also used Directory Opus on the Amiga....Directory Opus v1! It's not only amazing to me how different it has become since that first version, but also how it has also remained true to its roots.

I browsed those links, but couldn't find any

You didn't browse very far then. Under Links select Content Licensing and then click the huge purple Contact Us button. This will take you to a webmail form where you can put in your contact information and express your request to use their data.

I'm sure it won't be free, but it might be not as expensive as you think. Give it a try. Doesn't cost a thing to reach out.

It doesn't deal with machine footprints and calling home, which is the part I hate.

While DOpus does phone home you can block it in your firewall from doing so & DOpus will keep functioning normally with no complaints last I checked which means you could even use DOpus on a computer with no internet connection and suffer no ill effects.

DOpus isn't perfect...no program is, but it's one of the few file managers that are fairly close to perfect. The best part is they are very receptive to suggestions through their forum (unlike another file manager who shall remain nameless). As a matter of fact, Peter in the OP was talking about the 'venerable' descript.ion file format being supported. Guess which DC user convinced them to use that format rather than their own proprietary one?

What's remarkable about that is at the time I wasn't even a registered user of DOpus and it came up in an email conversation with Dr. Greg Perry when I was trying to angle for a discount.  ;D    That they would listen to me, an unknown non-customer, made me sit up and take notice. Speaking of discounts, there's never any reason to buy DOpus at full price. Send them a polite, respectful email and they'll happily give you a discount for 25% off just for you taking the time to take interest in them by reaching out.

As a matter of principle, I decided some years ago that I would avoid software that places arbitrary restrictions on how I can use it on my own computer(s).[/quote]

I, too, hate software that is licensed by computer. However, I lucked into a ridiculous Christmas deal offered by DOpus's german distributor a couple years ago. They were selling it cheaper than BDJ ever has & this deal even included the USB Export and Advanced FTP add-ons bundled in for no extra cost.

Having a license that let me use the program on two PCs (the second does not have to be a laptop) and a portable install on a flash drive sounded reasonable enough for me to make the purchase.

Peter, your post raises some interesting ideas....so let's discuss them. I apologize for the multiple quotes, but you post in an extremely dense, rambling format with not many small sentences and you just said too many things that needed to be addressed.

Well, posting general considerations in a DO fanboy thread was naïve, since it could only be met there with admirers' blah-blah, not addressing the underlying conceptional considerations. So I take the liberty to open a new thread for those, be there some arguments to come or not.

I'm just curious as to how you determined that the other thread was a 'fanboy' thread? I was the thread starter & all that was in my starting post was the announcement of the new version along with a list of what's new & the upgrade policy. It was very cut and dry. Also, if you go check out all the responses to that post I think you'll see that there's not a lot of praise. As a matter of fact, most posts were very neutral & some were even negative.

I think you'll find here at DC this is a different type of forum than you may be used to. Its members may take one side or the other, but we're pretty objective overall and discuss any differences of opinion we may have calmly and rationally. I've been a member for years & I've never seen an argument or flame war.

And this means, if you want to profit from this prog, release of a major update is the time the buy (full price, unfortunately, but full price for 3 years' it being up-to-date is better than paying half-price or more just for 10 months, right?).

I'm not sure what point you are are trying to make with your comments on the upgrade policy. You're saying the earlier you buy the more value you'll get before the new version comes out. How is this different than someone who buys a new car every year? Or anything else that releases updates?

Scriptability: Well, that's been offered before, and also from XY, SC and some others. As I said before, I don't see the real value in a given file commander's scriptability, since I've got an AHK macro system which gives me access to almost any "command" I am in need, or just in want, of, from ANY file manager today,  and also (here I have got some more work to do, though), from "anywhere where it applies", i.e. it's possible to access the respective file M functions from within another applic, from within there would be an "interest" of having access to the respective file M function, i.e. without switching to your file manager, and then triggering the relevant commands from within there.

So rather than write a script in the file manager's scripting language that is optimized for that environment, you would rather write a script in a generic scripting language that would accomplish the same thing just by a different means? I don't see the benefit in doing things your way & actually see a couple possible pitfalls to doing things your way. At the end of the day, though, you still have to write a script to accomplish the task either way so I'm going to call this a wash.

Why would I have to bother with a file manager, or worse, with a specific file manager, when I can do the work in a much more elegant way?

So rather than use a file manager's built-in abilities you would rather use AHK to re-invent the wheel. That's not smooth at all. That's being stubborn and contrary, IMHO.

Any file manager is an additional access gui to what you want to do, under the hood, so being able to have it done under the hood, without getting by a file manager for that specific task that arises within your REAL task, the one you are doing in your main prog at that time, IS a much more elegant way to do things, with no file manager coming into your way.)

But, you see, I use my file manager to do all my real tasks and it is my main program at all times. My file manager *replaces* Windows Explorer as the way to access everything on my system. My file manager is the one program I use every single day and it is open and running 90% of the time. I may use other programs to create content from time to time, but my file manager is what I use to do everything else on my PC. My file manager does not come into my way. No, it *paves* the way for me to get things done.

And as said, I do such things from ANY file manager even today, so for me, even FC XE does not have any limitation, e.g. compared with X2 (I don't own DO but don't see any additional functionality in there): from both (and several others), I trigger the same AHK commands, instead of relying upon what one file manager might be able to do, and another, not.

Every file manager is different and if you are using the same scripts for FC XE that you would for Directory Opus or Total Commander then you would be under-utilizing DOpus (or Total Commander) then and being extremely inefficient as there is *tons* of things DOpus (and TC) can do that FC XE can't...even with AHK.

I also said this before, general preview, both with XY and DO (i.e. not only for pics), seems to be superior to their competition, but then, in order to be fully functional (and unparalleled), DO's preview pane has to be spiced up with an external add-in that costs (if I remember well) 40 euro, i.e. some 55 dollar.

You must be talking about Quick View Plus. That's an add-on for Windows, not Directory Opus so you can't fault DOpus if it can take advantage of something that's an add-on to the OS itself. Therefore, this point as an argument is invalid, especially since QVP is not needed for DOpus to function head and shoulders above most file managers anyway.

Whilst XY just isn't helpful, DO's lapdogs, in their usual style, even become rude when some paying user (not me) dares to bring up the subject.

What specifics? And more importantly, lapdogs? Really? First the use of the word fanboys and now lapdogs? Sir, I've seen your tactics to rile up the populace elsewhere on the internet, but I fear they will not work here. Everyone here wants to discuss ideas, exchange information, and do it in a calm, respectful manner. I ask that you please do so as well.

...I prefer having the very best tool available for any given task, not some tool from the file manager but which more or less limits what I want to achieve;...

Now I know you aren't a regular user of Directory Opus, or Total Commander for that matter. Why are you discussing imagined shortcomings and lack of want or need for programs you have never used, or at least not used to any great extent?

You will have to build up your own toolbox; by waiting for some perfect toolbox, comprising it all, and delivered to you, at any price you're willing to pay, you'll just grow old - and that includes DO, notwithstanding their snooty pretending otherwise.

And this is near the root of your misguided opinion. You seem to think people buy DOpus, start using it, and that's that...never leaving its safe confines. I can assure you that could not be farther from the truth. I might dare say that DOpus users are more intent on 'building up their own toolbox' of the best of the best programs *and* integrating them into their file manager of choice more than any other group of people I know. Using DOpus' ability to interface and interact with those other programs like they are all one, integrated, meshed environment. No, sir, people don't buy DOpus to use it as their toolbox. They buy DOpus to use it as the glue to hold all the other tools in their toolbox together. If one would put it in programming terms, one could almost think of DOpus as being an IDE that one can use to bring all one's other tools 'under one roof', so to speak.

And now some additional remarks, re that 1001st DO thread:

1001st...ah, another jab. Again, that's not how we do things here.

Any file commander is just INTERFERING, badly or slightly, but interfering, with that "natural workflow" which in most cases, today, has NOT yet been realized for most people.

If your file manager is interfering with your natural workflow you are either using the wrong file manager for you or you aren't using the one you've got efficiently. Using the right file manager for you in the right way for you very well may possibly double or triple your productivity.

One last thing, this site was founded by developers for other developers and for others who appreciate good programs. Coming on here and spouting that developers are not a very creative lot who don't implement things in very inventive ways is going to leave a bad taste in the mouths of a lot of people around these parts.

I just want to clarify that I was not advocating that people should have free reign to insult or ridicule software developers. I'm merely of the mind that if something happens we don't like, we're allowed to voice a criticism without someone running into the room yelling, "Shhh..you'll upset the developers," with much arm-waving.

For the record, I can understand both sides of the "upgrade discount did not last in perpetuity" discussion, but I don't think an upgrade discount getting smaller after two years is unreasonable at all.

Full disclosure: I am a Directory Opus user & I bought the v11 upgrade before I even posted the OP. I also will disclose that I received the extra beta-tester discount as well for which I'm very thankful.

Yes, Directory Opus is not the least expensive program out there, but the author releases a major version every three years, not every year like most software authors. Divide that upgrade cost by three and it's not unreasonable at all, IMHO, especially for a program I use every single day.

As for the features added, it's true that there are no 'killer' features added, but I think it's a lot of nice additions that improve the experience as a whole. Besides, file managers are such an old genre of application that I don't think there are going to be too many more 'killer' features that lie undiscovered. While we're discussing new features, it's probably a good time to point out that the author doesn't hold back new features till a new major version hits. He keeps rolling out new features as fast as he can implement them regardless of whether or not it is a minor or major update. Nothing may grab you now, but something in v11.1 or v11.2 probably will.

You may as well upgrade now. You know you'll succumb sooner or later. ;)

I, for one, am against this "be careful what you say or our discounts will go away" mentality. For one, it's censorship plain and simple. Second, it sounds like they are buying our silence. Often print magazine reviews aren't taken seriously when they appear next to huge glossy ads for the products in the review.

In other words, when we start behaving this way there's an appearance of either a conflict of interest or we've been 'bought and paid for'.

If someone wants to offer me a discount on the condition I can't criticize their product then I don't want their discount or anything to do with them. I am not for sale & I hope others on this web site feel the same way.

DC has survived years without dealing in payola and I believe DC can survive in the future without it as well.

General Software Discussion / Directory Opus 11 Released!
« Last post by Innuendo on March 03, 2014, 07:05 PM »
Directory Opus 11 is finally out of beta!

The following is from the Directory Opus blog:

Upgrades and licensing:

Buy a new license (new customers)
Upgrade an existing license (existing customers)
Get a free 60-day evaluation license (available to everyone to test-drive the new version)

Registered Directory Opus 10 users can upgrade from as little as $50 AUD (~$45 USD, £27, €33).
If you bought Opus after 1st December 2013 then the update is completely free!
Users of older versions still qualify for discounted upgrades - visit the Upgrade page for a personalised quotation.
An extra discount will be given to Opus 10 users who were part of the public beta testing program - thank you all for your participation!

Just some of the highlights of Directory Opus 11 are:

The new scripting interface allows custom commands and scripts written in VBScript, JScript, etc to infinitely extend Opus
Toolbars can be saved in layouts and styles - different Listers can now use different toolbars
Toolbars can turn on or off automatically in specific folders or view modes
Enhanced hotkeys allow for multi-key sequences and multiple different keys for the same function
Dynamic toolbar button icons and highlighting allow you more control over your toolbar appearance
The new File Display Toolbar replaces the main Location toolbar, saving vertical space in the Lister
The new Jobs Bar lets you see and manage all file operations from one central location
Hide progress indicators by default, and remove them from the taskbar and Alt+Tab list to avoid interruptions to your workflow
New Details + Thumbnails mode combines the best of both modes
New "ghost" crumbs in the Breadcrumbs location field let you see where you have been as well as where you are now
Dual status bars let you see file and selection statistics for both file displays at once
Improvements to the Find-as-you-type field include search highlighting and command history
New options for the Folder Tree including root-level spacing and Favorites branch at the top of the tree as in Explorer
Integrated support for Windows 8.1 SkyDrive (OneDrive)
    Much, much more!

For a detailed list of changes, please see the What's New page.

^yeah, I know the feeling; "this is too good to last"...

I can't even tell that OSS is running. That's how good it is. And I can usually always tell when security software is running in the background. There are usually 'micro-lags' when opening files and such.

Hmm...wonder if OSS is even doing anything at all?  ;D

If I were a Dropbox for Business user (which I am not), merely visiting this page would be enough to give me your name and email address. (That animated gif is served from my Dropbox account.)

And since I am not a Dropbox user at all, how are they going to obtain my email address and name to give to you? I guess I would have to be a Dropbox user and logged on to the Dropbox service at the time I visited your web page.

If one were to have the Dropbox service running on their PC and logged on 24/7 this might be a real concern, but I guess if enough people complain Dropbox will either change or people will go to other services. Dropbox has never been the most competitively priced or most privacy-minded service anyway.

So this is not about employees. It's about Basic and Pro account users who have no relationship with that particular business, they just happened to download a file from that account, perhaps even without realising it was a file on a Dropbox account.

If I am a business owner & people who have no relationship with my business are downloading files from my repository, I want to know who downloaded and what was downloaded. Besides, if you have no relationship with my business then what are you doing downloading my files?

People downloading files and not even knowing what the source is of those files is the problem. What's going on here is just an audit trail for business activity.
471
Well, since you brought it up I will go ahead and admit this. I upgraded to 9.1 the other day in a hurry & I didn't even know the new malware settings even existed until I read your message here.  :-[

I'm a little worried, though. Outpost is running smoothly....too smoothly. Smoothly as in as smooth as Kaspersky ran before they screwed everything up and smoothly as in how smooth NOD32 ran before they screwed everything up as well.

I think you are mis-interpreting this.

If something is uploaded to any Dropbox account and made available to others for download, it is perfectly reasonable for the poster to be able to know who has downloaded the file.

I agree with this interpretation. This pertains to Dropbox for Business accounts. The way I see it Dropbox is making available a way for business owners to see what kind of file transfers their employees are engaging in and with whom.

This is perfectly reasonable. If I was shelling out the money so my employees could use Dropbox, I'd want to know how my employees were using company resources.

These guys just keep the good stuff coming. My chosen course of study, and ultimately career path, requires that I have all sorts of things on my hard drive that make most security software flash alerts all over the place...which they rightly should.

These new detection settings are most welcome and allow those of us who know what we're doing to dial back the warning dialogs.

General Software Discussion / Re: The Best Security Suites (2013/2014)
« Last post by Innuendo on February 21, 2014, 07:27 AM »
The best security suites is the one that controls even the Kernel.
I am referring to Windows XP. I was told that Windows XP will be unprotected against Kernel attacks after April, I mean after its end of support.
Is there any program that controls even the Kernel?

Windows XP was first released in 2001. Why stay with a 12-year old OS? When XP just came out if someone asked you advice on how to stay with Windows 95, what would you tell them? And there was only a 6 year span between those OSes!

Modernize, please. You don't have to go whole hog and upgrade to Windows 8.x, but at least move to Windows 7. If you have half-way decent specs in your PC with a decent graphics card you'll enjoy better performance than you did with XP. Once Microsoft officially drops support, you're going to start seeing your favorite programs dropping support as well & some will release new versions that won't even be able to install on XP any longer.

But to stay on the topic of this thread, which is security, even with the latest patches Windows XP is not as secure as the OSes that have come after it.
