I have a really hard time following how Google links all their services and which bits of info from one service get fed to one or more of the others.

I review the "view data stored with this account" section from time to time. Have to give the devil its due for having this under account settings. On my last visit I learned that I had "subscribed" to some Arabic language forum... (not much use to me coz I can't say/follow anything beyond "How are you?" and "Thank you" in that language - there's only a limited no. of posts one can make with those two phrases before being permabanned on a forum, methinks ;)) and that I had claimed ownership (confirmation pending) on a notorious music piracy site based in the UK that was recently shut down. There's too much voodoo going on for my liking and I feel foolish for browsing for as long as I have while being signed into my Google account simply to make a few things more convenient.

I had clicked a +1 button somewhere (I could swear I was signed out at the time) and a few days later I log into another Google account of mine and could see the link I'd +1'd. There was no seeking out on my part what ppl. had +1'd, Google just let me have that info., no questions asked, coz the accounts are "linked". No clue what constitutes a linked account either.

With FB, I know they're a**holes but their a**holery is limited mostly within their network. With Google being as ubiquitous as they are, the sky's the limit.

This only seems to happen when you search via the main webpage. I use GoogleBar Lite (it's not the official Google toolbar) and get regular links. I think this may also be possible with other sites that serve as a frontend for Google's search engine.

I don't think the PC would be powering down those devices during transfer but just for the heck of it, go to device manager and make sure power management is disabled for that USB root hub.

I somehow don't see most of the Facebook crowd uprooting themselves from their cozy established networks to join Google+, which seems geekier and less fun. FB definitely has an upper hand here, they have the masses. They just have to react and tweak in whatever G+ is doing better, to nullify the advantage.

I'll just come out and say it, a big part of me wants Google+ to fail. Orkut is a running joke here and I can't even remember the name of their latest FAIL ("Wave"... I googled it... irony! :) ). It just feels wrong that they can keep fucking up and coming back because they have obscene amounts of money to throw around. :down:

I don't trust Facebook, I trust Google even less.

Windows does pick up that string from the .exe so you weren't entirely wrong. The program already had an entry in your registry, so if you modified the exe you'd have to locate and delete the existing entry and then do an... open with... browse to exe... before the modified string would come into effect.

You can use a resource editor like Resedit to take a peek inside your exe, if you're curious.

I've enabled an email notification in Acronis that triggers on failure. There are still a lot of things that could go wrong... I suppose I could get notified of mirroring failure using a command line mailer or something but you've got to draw the line somewhere. Easier just setting an alarm.  :P

I haven't updated my backup software for a while now since things work fine and updating just leaves me with the job of ensuring nothing has gone awry.

I've recently started doing a rotating full system backup (Windows + installed programs) using True Image and a little batch file. The batch file takes care of the 'rotating' bit - deletes the oldest backups, so at any given time now I have a full backup of the last 7-9 days. These get mirrored to 3 internal HDDs daily and hopefully (this part's manual  ;) ) to an external drive weekly. 

I'd been getting careless regarding full system backups and would only do them when someone (usually mouser :)) reminded people to backup. It's a relief to have the thing automated and out of the way.

Trivia: I'm running the same Windows XP install now for seven years using drive imaging to save & restore clean images - it's spanned 3 major hardware upgrades, IIRC, and works like a charm. :)

That's awesome! I pay around $25 and get 1/30th the speed!

But I do wonder what people use these seriously fast connections for... I source 90% of my TV viewing from the net and barely have time to view everything.

Mahesh, I have a Tata Photon stick as backup should the MTNL connection go on the fritz. I've only had to use it once - it was faster than my wired connection, IIRC.
