Haven't used it... but I like it.

I don't display my desktop icons: but I know the people I manage at work all use their desktops to arrange their icons in groups -- this'd work a treat like that.

Also my browser does get to be a mess after a while with all the tabs. And I know mitzevo I should close them... I eventually do when I can't stand it any more, but then I often have to go grab it out of the History  :-[

I could be with both of you... but I've never used the ribbon -- but it's showing up in other applications now too. I certainly don't have anything against it per se, and my basic instincts are not entirely happy when people refuse to adapt. But as I say, I've not tried it (at work we're still many years behind).

I was advising a friend with a new laptop the other day about the benefits of Free / Cheaper MS alternatives... most people do not use or need the power in the Office Applications - ever. It's just that they use "Excel" for "spreadsheet" and "Word" for "word processor" etc... Somewhat like we say "Google" for "web search".

But what happened was that the hardware vendor gave her a student license, which effectively means that she'll not investigate other alternatives. Which is a shame.

nudone: it begs the question - what part of "ultra" do they not understand?

Developer's Corner / Re: Simple Public License (SimPL)

I think SimPL seems about right for e.g. N.A.N.Y. kind of projects, should one choose to open source them (thinking about this thread).

It would be nice to have a selection of licences for the posabilities: DonationWare, FreeWare, Open Source  :-\

and there's a 50% beta / intro price on their other applications too.

They look pretty good: anyone else had experiece with any of the other titles?

  I've PM'd you.

Wow.  Somehow I missed this thread.  I am more than willing to alpha/beta test any software people are looking for testers for.

If you're interested in testing any specific entries you may like to mention it in their thread(s), just so they're aware  ;)

I know you probably didn't mean to, but you just made me laugh  :D

The scraper will definitely be useful! Thanks for finding it: it's great.

You can write your own WMS searches. I've done a few, as have others here on DC. It's great when your scraping search results, as it gives you an interactive functionality.

I think your alias is perfect for situations where you want the scrape the same thing, or you're not looking for a range of results. Yes? I'm not sure as I have not played with it, but I can imagine some very useful uses.
464
Have you had a look at FARR plugin: FarrWebMetaSearch 1.6.0? It's also a powerful scraper with the ability to display as you type (amongst other things)... a little different to what your alias is doing.

No, I agree about the scraper: it's a great find!! ...and your alias is great too!
465
That's a nice find...

I use WebMetaSearch that does that in FARR, and of course FARRTimeZone... but I can think of other good uses to put that to instead of doing it by hand...
466
What a good read: thanks!
467
Me too  :o, but all in good time...

I've PM'd you, but the give-away software is so that you don't have to use a cheap alternative.

The two software title function quite differently... let me know if you have a preference.

we can finally compete with all those countries that have terrible english translations on their t-shirts etc :D

I hadn't thought of that... but that's a funny (if not totally PC) idea  ;D

Living Room / Re: Looking for a Decent Contacts Manager
« Last post by Perry Mowbray on July 15, 2010, 01:34 AM »
However I am still watching for your new app as soon as you have anything available for testing.   :D

I'm trying not to feel under pressure  ;) but in terms of what you're wanting (and my hopes too infact):
  • Add contacts with ability to add details, like spouse, children, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

I was going to have relationships that could be exported in xfn format. Birthdays and anniversaries are fields.

  • Able to add notes and if possible, links to associated files.

Notes are a field. Associated files: hadn't got to that, but that's a good idea and probably just extends the links area.

  • Ability to slice and dice the data in many ways.

Not sure what you're thinking of here, but I'm wondering if export to excel/access would work?

  • This one I have had difficulty finding: Ability to print the address book without having to print them as a series of separate cards.

There are three parts to this project: the application, a FARR plugin and HTML exports (I was thinking here that I'd put them on a password protected directory, or USB drive, etc). The HTML will be based on xml, so getting a print view would be pretty easy in fact...

Anyway, this is maybe a discussion that should be happening over in the NANY2011 thread

Take a look at Open Contacts Free, open source, simple and flexible.  Reasonable printing by selection.  Just basic and works great for me.

Well, I wouldn't have called OC basic per se: it does a lot of Addressbook related stuff. I've been a OC user for many years now, but like fenix last year, it just didn't seem to click with me in the long term. But it's an excellent programme... and will ensure that I write an OC to ContactsFX import option  ;)

I noticed a lot of these apps try to mimic Outlook in many ways as I guess they feel that Outlook's features are known/wanted by most users. (Not me, though!)

Glad to hear that  I only want an AddressBook, if I wanted Outlook I'd use Outlook  :) ... at the moment I'm using OC.

Would that fit with the awards and achievements from the programming school?

I like the idea  :)

Should you use both? Like use Method 1 and if necessary use Method 2 (say on Method 1 failures)?? Or have I got that wrong?
