General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox 7 is out
« Last post by cyberdiva on September 29, 2011, 07:59 AM »
Hmmm...late yesterday I was unable to update.  I was told that 6.0.2 was the most recent version.  This morning, I'm able to update, but FF claims that the Linkman Fox extension won't work.  Though I suppose I could download the add-on Carol mentioned earlier and try to deal with the issue that way, I'm puzzled that Linkman Fox (the add-on for FF) supposedly doesn't work.  And I'm somewhat bothered that FF is making add-on developers jump through hoops every few weeks.

Thanks, Carol.  I think I'll give it a try later today.  Gotta run.

I am amazed someone hasn't come out with an extension to fix stupidly broken extensions!

Actually they have - see Add-on Compatibility Reporter https://addons.mozil...patibility-reporter/
I've resisted this add-on, but I just took a look, and the most recent comment is that it isn't working with FF7.  Duh.  If Surfulater and Lazarus worked with Opera, I'd switch.  But they don't, and so I won't.

Hi, all.  I just got notified that Firefox 7 is available.  As usual, I responded "remind me later," since I always like to have some feedback first from those braver or more foolhardy than I am.  :)

I've had Malwarebytes Pro on my computers for several years now.  Yes, I think it's very good.  Yes, I think it's worth it, especially since it's a lifetime license.  (Indeed, I paid full price, and I still think it's worth it.  At $14.95, it's a steal.)  Every now and then, there's a hike in CPU usage, but it doesn't last.

General Software Discussion / Re: Start Menu X now in beta
« Last post by cyberdiva on September 19, 2011, 08:21 AM »
True Launch Bar is taking care of my daily "Start > all programs" needs, and I also wanted to use as little CPU & Memory as possible, so I stick to Vista's standard. I go there maybe once a day.
Yes, I too am concerned about keeping my new computer relatively lean, and I've found that a launcher--in my case, mouser's LaunchBar Commander--satisfies my need to access most programs.  That was not true on my old computer, since I had managed to accumulate so many programs.  I wasn't willing to uninstall them, but I didn't want to clutter LaunchBar Commander with all of them.  Thus, Start Menu 7 was extremely useful.

Hmmm....when Dennis wrote some time ago to announce Start Menu 7, I was under the impression that he was primarily changing the name from the rather confusingly-named Vista Start Menu and perhaps adding a few features.  IIRC, I replaced Vista Start Menu with Start Menu 7 and saw very little difference.  I'm thus surprised to see from the link you've posted that he's continuing to list both versions, as well as some others.

I might add that I found Vista Start Menu/Start Menu 7 very useful on my old Windows XP computer, which had well over 200 programs.  Dennis's Start Menu made them much easier and quicker to find than they had been with the built-in Windows "All Programs" listing.  However, I'm trying to be much more selective about adding programs to my relatively new Windows 7 computer, and so I haven't found as much need for Dennis's Start Menu.  Thus, though I still recommend it, I haven't put it on my new computer.

Curt, you're right that Dennis has just announced a new beta version of his Start Menu X program, but I think he changed the name from Vista Start Menu to Start Menu 7 well over a year ago.

Steven, it may be that either Breevy or PhraseExpress will meet your needs.  As I read about what you'd like to do with scripture verses, I thought of another program you might want to try: ActiveWords.  I've used it for years and find it almost indispensible.  With it, you can certainly do text expansion (which it calls Substitute text), launch a program, navigate to a website, send email, open a file (and, if you wish, specify the program in which you want the file to open), open a folder, or do more complicated procedures via its Scripting codes.  I've tried a couple of other text expansion programs, but I find I prefer ActiveWords.  It's available in a very limited free version and in the much more capable commercial version.  IIRC, you can test the commercial version for 60 days before deciding whether to buy it.

Hmmm...as I recall, Iobit was accused a year or so ago of stealing Malwarebytes' intellectual property.  The evidence was pretty strong.  I decided then that I would have nothing more to do with Iobit.

General Software Discussion / Re: Any better Clipboard program.
« Last post by cyberdiva on August 30, 2011, 12:00 AM »
I really wanted to like Clipmate but something in the many modes of operation keeps confusing me.

Well, I've been using ClipMate for many years, and I suspect it was probably considerably simpler when I first started to use it.  Then again, as much as I appreciate simplicity, I find that many of the programs I like best tend to be feature-rich.  I'm thinking of Directory Opus, ClipMate, Linkman, UltraEdit, and Surfulater, among others.  I probably use a very small percent of the features these programs offer, but in each case, they offer more of the features I want than do the competing programs I've tried, and I simply ignore all the features I don't care about.   One nice thing about these feature-rich programs is that when I find additional features I'd like, these programs usually already have them.

Thanks very much, rjbull, for the "powerpaste" features in CHS and ArsClip.  I'm glad to know about these.  Now I have a place to start looking if I ever decide to replace ClipMate.

Though I've tried a couple of other clipboard managers, I haven't found any that I like as much as ClipMate.  One feature that I use a lot and that I haven't found in other programs I've tried is ClipMate's PowerPaste.  It will automatically paste each item from the clipboard in order (ascending or descending) into any document.  It's great for making lists, filling out forms, putting selected paragraphs together, etc.

A question about the software itself : when I try to add http://www.lg.com/fr...lephones-mobiles.jsp, (Add article + page by r-clicking on the corresponding IE page), the stored page is missing a lot of info.  I have chose a LG site because it's difficult for most software to capture it.

Is there a setting that would improve the capture ?

I just tried to capture the page via right-click using Firefox 6.  I think I got it all, though it lines up vertically each of the versions of each picture.  It's not pretty, but I think I've captured all the text and all the graphics.

As for a setting that would improve the capture, that's probably a good question for Neville Franks, the developer.  He can be reached via the Support page of the Surfulater website.

I was about to suggest Directory Opus, but I see wraith808 beat me to it, as well as offering other, perhaps more reasonably-priced suggestions.  But I'm just wondering--I have heard so many enthusiastic reports about Total Commander: are you sure that it doesn't have a way to toggle from double to single pane?

I'm in Maryland, and I was in my car waiting for the light to change to green when suddenly the car started to shake rather strongly.  I looked around, trying to see what lowlife was shaking my car, but I didn't see anyone.  The shaking continued, and so I decided that the car's engine was having terrible trouble.  I worried about whether I'd make it home.  Then the shaking stopped, and  I did make it home without it happening again.  When I walked in the door my husband greeted me with "We've had an earthquake!"  Apparently our house shook quite noticeably.  Fortunately, there seems to be no damage, not even anything that fell from the shelves, though apparently there was some damage in Washington DC and Virginia.

Well, I've got a very dumb LG cell phone for which I pay $20 every three months.    Admittedly, I don't use it all that often, but I have it when I need it.  And since I rarely use it, the battery goes for months on a single charge.  I confess, though, that I was about to buy an Optimus V android and join the more-or-less modern world, but then I found that there was no decent Scrabble game available for it.  I've got my priorities, and that for me was the deal-breaker.  ;D  So I kept my dumb phone and am continuing to use my PalmTX for everything else.  Yes, the TX has a very good Scrabble game  :) , as well as a Spanish/English dictionary, a French/English dictionary, a German/English dictionary, my calendar (Datebk 6), my contacts, memos, email, a not-very-good web browser, wi-fi, bluetooth, a bunch of movies, and more. )

General Software Discussion / Re: Download.com and the installer scam
« Last post by cyberdiva on August 22, 2011, 04:20 PM »
As I mentioned in another posting today, Bill Pytlovany, the developer of WinPatrol, wrote with dismay in his blog about CNET's new practice of including a "Download Manager" with software from download.com.  He made it clear that if people download his program from his website, they will not have to deal with unwanted software.
469
A lifetime license to WinPatrolPLUS, normally $29.99, is available for $9.99 this week (starting today, Aug. 22, 2011).  WinPatrol's developer, Bill Pytlovany, announced this on this blog, along with an observation that CNET, which also has WinPatrolPLUS available, now tries to include a Download Manager if you get WinPatrolPLUS from CNET's downloads.com.  Bill assures people that if you download from his site, you won't have to deal with unwanted software inclusions.  Links for downloading or upgrading are included in the blog.

I have used WinPatrolPLUS on all my computers for years.  I highly recommend it.

Oshyan, I thought askSam was either dead or dying, but I've recently learned that they're working on a new version.  That amazed me, given how unresponsive they have been for well over a year to questions, requests, bug reports, etc., about the current version (version 7).  I think they changed ownership fairly recently, which may have injected some new life.  I dunno.  I'm pretty bummed out with the program and the lack of support, but I do still use the databases I made.

@CyberDiva - I've noticed you often speak highly of Surfulator. Ever consider posting a review of Surfulator on DC? You're a longtime user so you'd be uniquely qualified to do it.
 :)

40hz, I wish I could, but I'm up to my eyeballs in work and personal commitments.  :(

Over the years, I've used a zillion different information gatherers/managers, but none of them seemed good for everything.  Then I discovered Surfulater, and that has been my information manager of choice for the past couple of years.  I haven't tried InfoQube or TreeSheets, but I don't feel any real need to switch.  The one thing I haven't found is a replacement for askSam's ability to create free-form databases.  The rest of askSam sucks, IMHO, but for free-form databases I continue to use askSam.  Are there easy-to-use alternatives?  I have no wish to deal with Access-type programs.  Also, I don't care whether a program can do other things--all I'm looking for is an easy-to-use program to create and use databases.

Living Room / Re: Firefox fixes the version number problem
« Last post by cyberdiva on August 19, 2011, 09:07 AM »
Of course, that problem would be resolved if there was some proper notification during updates/upgrades that plugins won't work, and I mean a specific notification of *which* add-on doesn't work, with the option to rollback the current installation.

Hmmm...that's strange.  When I got the notification of FF6 being available, I had the choice of Upgrade or Ask me later.  After a while, I chose Upgrade, and that produced a box telling me which of my add-ons wouldn't work with FF6, and it also gave me a chance to go back to the original box and click on Ask me later.  I did that a couple of times, and each time the number of add-ons diminished (e.g., Linkman issued a new version that works with FF6, so Linkman was no longer listed in the won't-work box).  Now there's just one left.  I'd try to force it to be compatible, but I see no reason to rush to update to FF6, so I'll just stay with 5 and be patient.

Would anyone cry if HP disappeared altogether? I certainly wouldn't.
Well, I'll shed a few tears, since I still use my beloved PalmTX.  Then again, HP hasn't provided much support for the TX.  But then again, after a while, neither did Palm, so I was happy that HP bought Palm.  Oh well....

I tend to agree with vlastimil. While I, as a power user, don't necessarily prefer automatic updates, it is a good thing for the vast majority of users *if* it can be implemented properly. By proper implementation I mean that it will never restart the browser or computer without the user's consent, it will never break extensions or if it does it will ask the user if that's ok *and* allow them to delay update for some time....

What you're describing is not so different from what Firefox has been doing for some time.  When a new version (or sub-version) is issued, I'm told when I use FF that a new version is out and I'm asked whether I want to update now.  I'm given the choice of updating now or having FF ask me again later.   I think that's quite different from the automatic updating that seemed to be described earlier in this thread, updating that gives the user little or no say.
