Isn't annoying that software is almost always about... compromises?

;D Indeed! Of all the desktop search engines I have tried, I like Archivarius the best. What I *could* do is to target what it indexes and NOT have it index Outlook (though the last time I had it installed I had it set that way and, as mentioned, it's index was 50% bigger than the X1 index,  and 30% bigger than dtSearch, both which DID include Outlook). However, for now I'm content to give WDS 4 another go, though it's not indexing ANY pdf or Office content anywhere on my system. I'm considering reseting it and re-indexing everything, but so far the only instructions that I have found are for WDS 3...

BTW, regarding real time monitoring and Archivarius, what I have done in the past is schedule indexes for every 5 minutes or so. As long as you don't try to do this with an Outlook index, running the index in the background is remarkably resource "light" and very quick.

Well, X1 is gone and my computer is quieter (for the most part) and running cooler. Win-win, except that WDS doesn't index my documents location... I'll have to work on that!
453
Hmph! I downloaded the pdf and saved it in a folder that X1 is supposed to be watching and fully indexing. I then set X1 to run whether the computer is in use or not and did a manual indexing... three times. As far as I can tell, not only doesn't X1 index the complete file, it's not indexing this one AT ALL!

Thank you for reminding me of this, Armando, I dimly recall you asking me to run the same experiement, on the same file - because I certainly recognize it - with the same result in the past.

I wish I'd kept dtSearch and Archivarius around to see if they picked it up...

At any rate, this may just be the "push" I needed to remove X1 and just stick with WDS. It's not like I search my files all that much, anyway  ;)

Or if you're only interested in being able to quickly swap HDDs and you don't care about other things (Optical Drives), you can get a "Toaster."
 (see attachment in previous post)

I have a couple of the ones pictured, one with eSata, and they work REALLY well. So well that I haven't had any problem with the drives over heating due to being plugged in and powered up all the time. Can't say the same for a traditional enclosure (I've had plenty of those drives fail, I think, due to poor air circulation).

my harddrive and fan both go nuts every so often

I think this is probably true of all your fans  ;)

Occupational hazard?

The thing that p****s me off about WDS is that it's extremely random as to whether or not it will index my documents. I'm on Win 7 but have partitioned my drive into C: for windows and apps and E: for documents, settings, and mail. I suspect that therein lies the source of my problem. I reinstalled the latest version of X1, was thrilled/surprised to find that my license still works, and it's been flawless. My only quibble is that my harddrive and fan both go nuts every so often, I expect when X1 is updating. I also installed the latest versions of Archivarius and dtSearch. Settled on X1 because it creates an index that is 30% smaller than dtSearch and half the size of the one created by Archivarius. X1 also integrates with the search bar in the start menu.

Honestly, I'm not sure if I'm going to stick with it, though. Time will tell...

General Software Discussion / Re: Opera to support extensions in V11
« Last post by Darwin on October 14, 2010, 06:22 PM »
If it indeed supports Roboform I'll be giving it a go. I've tried 'em all and am stuck with IE8 because they all have their flaws (Chrome takes over everything and messes it up), Safari - no extensions, Firefox, insane resource utilitzation on my setup. IE8 is pretty bad for resource consumption but it's built in and hardest to get rid of! If Opera 11 is as svelte and quick as it was the last time I had it installed, I'll run it, I just won't install any of the Opera apps (like the torrent widgets).

General Software Discussion / Re: True Launch Bar v5.0

Ha! I'm down to 178, Curt WITH TrueLaunchBar installed (I broke down earlier today). It plays VERY nicely with Win 7 64-bit. However, I doubt that I'll keep it around - I've gotten very used to the smart taskbar.

How do I stay below 200 apps installed... I guess I'm just brutal! I have let go of a lot of "I paid for it so I must use it" thinking, which has helped. I try not to have duplicate functionality. Another thing I've done is gotten rid of apps I simply never use. Having said that, Art Rage 3 Pro and Xara Designer Pro are both still installed and I have NEVER used them  :-[ Ditto for Corel Paint Shop Pro X3, though I have used it, albeit rarely.

Have you tried either of the companion products from JGsoft - RegEx Buddy and RegEx Magic?

Both are directly available in EditPad Pro search pane and the Magic version requires no RegEx syntax knowledge! All the power of RegEx without the pain.

Yes... I have licenses for both. The real problem that I have is that once I quit my PhD I lost all need to actually use/learn Grep, so simply haven't taken the time and, indeed, haven't had the time. One day, though...

widgewunner - you're right about the column editing mode, I did use that a lot when I was working on my PhD. Don't need it anymore, though. The other thing that I totally agree about WRT EPP is the search and replace feature. This is one of the things that I was thinking about when I talked about the GUI being subtley superior. I'm crap with reg-ex, but love having it right there to play with (one hopes that eventually it'll "stick").

I love EditPad Pro as well. I have a lifetime license for UltraEdit but I much, much prefer EditPad Pro - so much so that I recently uninstalled edit-32, despite the lifetime license. I can't quite put my finger on why I prefer EditPad Pro... I suppose that if pressed I'd point to the GUI, though.

I'm sorry to hear this, app, but I hope that you will find something that allows you to realize your goals and that you find fullfilling. Leaving a dream behind is difficult, and, as mouser said, I know that you can lean on the DC community and I hope that you do.

Good luck!

General Software Discussion / Re: Anyone familiar with Oops!Backup?
« Last post by Darwin on October 12, 2010, 12:18 PM »
Doh! After the latest backup, Oops!Backup is using 168 MB/180 MB (Private/Working Set) memory on my system... I've noticed no adverse performance hit or anything, and can't say what usage went to during the backup. I only noticed this because when I checked before I left TM open in the background with the OopsBackup.Engine.exe process highlighted and noticed the huge increase in memory usage when I maximized TM to shut it down.

Personally, I'm not really bothered/worried about this, but though Armando should know!

Hmm... thank you for sharing your experience/usage, rssapphire. Food for thought... I don't know, I'm so used to Win 7's taskbar "as is" that I don't know if I'll find TrueLaunchBar useful. Only one way to find out!

I really LIKED GTL, when it was working. It's odd, because it was a MUCH larger download than Oops!Backup, yet it felt a bit lighter, in some indefineable (ie I can't justify this observation) way. Also, I found it to be even simpler to use the Oops!Backup. It certainly isn't as "pretty" (WRT GUI) as Oops!Backup...

My bottom-line: download the trial, backup one small folder and see how stable it is. Even better, see if you can download an earlier build, set it to watch/backup one small folder, and then try to use the notification area tray icon to update it and see what happens.

I find TrueLaunchBar to be indispensible under XP and Vista. Under Win 7 I no longer have any need of it as I have grown to love the new taskbar.

Anyone running Win 7 with TrueLaunchBar for any reason other than a dislike of the smart taskbar?

I think that this relative lack of flexibility makes it an easier to use software.

Good point. I haven't tried the multi-drive backup feature because it would be overkill for me (I mainatin a secondary backup of my documents, music, video, ebook, and outlook files via Super Flexible File Synchronizer). I do love how simple it is to use; I'd hate that to be "messed up"!

Armando - I just checked and Oops!Backup is using a total (spread over two processes) of 73 MB/129 MB RAM (Private/Working Set) on my system (Win 7 64-bit with 4GB RAM) during a scheduled backup. FWIW, it's never slowed my system down (that I can tell). It's now at rest and those numbers really haven't changed significantly.

In Oops!Backup 3 there is an option to setup a 2nd Backup Drive. I haven't done this so I'm not sure how this works... Reading merleone's post, I guess this means that multiple drives = multiple FULL backups/discrete backups (mail on E:, docs on F: system on G: or something like that)?

I love Oops!Backup and regret spending the money on Genie Timeline Pro (I've listed my beefs with that application in this and other threads)... I have not had a problem so far. If you read the comments on the BDJ page for the Oops!Backup deal, DC's onw merleone has this to say:

I have a license since a while ago, when OB was just out of beta.  It has been working flawlessly since then, updates are easy and the latest major upgrade was offered free of charge.  What else !

I appreciate the fact that the latest version can be recovered without any additional software, contrarily to other solutions

Of course, I suspect you've already read it as it looks like you posted right after him  ;D

« Last post by Darwin on October 11, 2010, 02:16 PM »
I loved Onenote 2007 and love 2010 as much, if not more... There are no MAJOR changes but there are tweaks. The only one that comes to mind is that when you select "Send to Onenote" from the context menu in IE, you are prompted to select a section in which to save the note. Of course, this MAY have been possible in Onenote 2007 - it's possible that I had changed a setting to have the note sent to a default and have long since forgotten...

Overall, unless you're upgrading to a new version of Office 2010 that includes Onenote, I'm not sure I'd pay to upgrade, but I can confirm that nothing is broken/screwed up!

Ha, ha - I'm looing at the cover of my copy, also purchased in 1981 when I was 12, as I write this. My 8 year old has been poring over it trying to solve his Rubik's Cube. What I wish I could find is my original Rubik's Cube. It was beautifully made and sikly smooth and I was the envy of my friends in middle school. Long gone, though...
