General Software Discussion / Are Recovery Disks Brand Specific?
« Last post by crabby3 on May 12, 2014, 07:44 AM »
My first computer was an Averatec laptop, running XP and came with 3 recovery disks.

Can I use these on a different brand machine?  Like Dell, Acer or whatever?   :tellme:

You Know You're a Mom When ...

Your feet stick to the kitchen floor.....and you don't care.

You spend an entire week wearing sweats and yet...you still managed to gain 10 pounds.

Your favorite television show is a cartoon.

Peanut butter and jelly is eaten at least in one meal a day.

You're willing to kiss your child's boo-boo, regardless of where it is.

Your baby's pacifier falls on the floor and you give it back to her, after you suck the dirt off of it because you're too busy to wash it off.

Your kids make jokes about farting, burping, pooping, etc. and you think it's funny.

You automatically double-knot everything you tie.

Spit is your number one cleaning agent.

None of us would be here if it weren't for mothers.   :)

I'm sure we'll soon see the day when books and music will have limits on them, such as, "You have 180 days to read this [e]book; after that, it is digitally erased from your collection via DRM."

And I swear I've seen some of the rumbling early attempts at that already, I just don't have references handy. One of you net researcher types can poke around if you want.

This looks like a 'How-To' on removing DRM protection so I guess time limits exist.

Possibly this person could use a grammar eBook?  ;D  Or maybe English is not their first language?

No I won't miss em.   They won't be gone any time soon though.   :-\   The publishers make too much money selling advertising space.

Besides... newsprint, with veggie-based ink, cleans glass just as good as paper towels and it's a lot cheaper.   ;D

It's true that updating Flash requires applying one update for IE and a separate update for other browsers.  However, the update that I thought we were talking about was not Flash but an update for a problem that only affected Internet Explorer.  That's why many people were advising using a browser other than IE until the problem was fixed in IE.

That's correct.  We were/are talking about the IE update.  This Flash update is just a little off topic and I wasn't/aren't quite sure how you handle any updates.

@cyberdiva  This may be of interest.  http://krebsonsecuri...ash-player-zero-day/

Windows users who browse the Web with anything other than Internet Explorer will need to apply this patch twice, once with IE and again using the alternative browser (Firefox, Opera, e.g.).

Being clueless (just kiddin 40) I don't know how trustworthy this is.

Quit clouding the issue with facts. We people of the internet do not take kindly to people who cloud.  ;)

Heh that's just *made* for the Simpson's Homer voice!

However, KB 2964358 is rated as "important" rather than "critical," even though it would seem that the issue is more serious than "important" suggests.
Vista is my poison and the update was listed as 'important' as well.  Though I don't recall ever seeing one labled 'critical'.  Just Important and Recommended.
Had to reset my Update History so it only goes back to December 2013 and Installed Updates doesn't list Importance so I may have had a Critical.

Moreover, this update was offered to me but not checked, which usually is a sign I shouldn't be quick to install it.
Mine was also unchecked.

Needless to say, I haven't yet installed it.
Why would one chose to ignore a security update for anything installed?

General Software Discussion / Re: New App - Floating Ruler - Feedback?

Some may like this as well.
Ruler works great but the protractor and screen-cap features are excellent... IMO.  :D

Their site says the Freeware version may include third-party (sponsored) advertisements but as I recall if you choose Custom Install these can be avoided.

The patch appears to be out:

Also, MS *is* providing patches for IE 6, 7 and 8 on WinXP SP3.

Thanks for the link mwb1100.  According to this site, if you have auto-update set, the patch will be downloaded/installed like any other update.

I do have auto-update set but I manually *checked for updates* so I could get the required restart out of the way.  ;D

... Once again some breathless reporting directed at the clueless from people that should know enough to do a little more research and editing prior to rushing their article into print.

I suppose I am "clueless" but only when it pertains to computers or cell phones.

Monday evening, on CNN, was where I first heard about this.  Yesterday, Tuesday, I figured DC would have covered the topic.  Found zilch.  My web search brought up around 10 sites.  I picked Forbes.  I didn't want to spend an hour desiding which site to link.  Being "clueless" I wanted to bring the supposedly bad news to DCers ASAP.

CNN rarely runs a story about anything to do with computers much less a specific issue.

I just heard about this yesterday.  This site explains a couple of workarounds.

http://www.forbes.co...-1-in-4-pcs-exposed/

It appears XP users are basically screwed.   :(

People wanna comment? Is this massive!?

I thought it would have already been posted.  Not many IE users I guess?
