Hah! Awesome.

Ahhh yes, correction to what I said above: there has to be audio coming from whatever you want to adjust. So just start playing a YouTube video or something and you'll see the volume for that app appear (in the case of Firefox it might be the plugin container, and unfortunately this may not control e.g. embedded audio in a web page, so you may need to find an example of that). A little bit of a pain, yes, but think of what it would be like if it tried to show all apps. All *running* apps would be nice though. I suppose it just looks for apps making calls to the audio system and presents volume control for each audio stream. Maybe not ideal, but a big improvement over XP.

Living Room / Re: Why My Mom Bought an Android, Returned It, and Got an iPhone
« Last post by JavaJones on August 24, 2011, 12:56 PM »
Man, you guys are cranky! Get off my lawn, indeed. Hehe. Personally I love my smart phone. A few years ago before I got a cell phone at all, when all my friends pretty much had them, I was kind of against them. And regular cell phones *aren't* an essential for me - if I had one I would probably keep it off a lot of the time. But a smart phone, that's a different story. So damn useful all the fricking time. I don't see how any serious computer user can avoid their utility for long. They are an awesome complement to a proper computer or laptop.

On another note, an update from my friend who had an iPhone and wanted Android: He bought an HTC Evo 3D with Sprint and he's happy overall, but definitely has a few issues. I'm not clear whether he prefers it over his iPhone fully yet, but I know he's had some problems that he did not have with his iPhone, issues like random reboots and some browser pages persistently reloading. So that's not so great. He was never a huge app user on his iPhone and I don't think he is in Android yet either. But we'll see. I'm curious how things will be in a few months.

I think Mandork has it right: it really depends on which phone you get. And in that regard the iPhone/Android debate is almost *exactly* like the Mac/PC debate. Mac's "just work" (no, not really, but maybe more on average than PCs), largely because they are made by a single manufacturer, have a single OS, and Apple has not been too concerned about long-term backward compatibility nor allowing for a range of hardware upgrades (e.g. few graphics card options). PCs are vastly more configurable and flexible, available in a range of different models, but they have more problems, or at the very least there are *problematic models* and/or manufacturers. So that's the thing, with Android and PCs, you have choice, and choice means *you can make a bad choice*. With iPhone you really have no choice, and while certain specific Android models may exceed iPhone in some areas, *overall* iPhone is a more polished platform and experience. So unless you get a good device on Android, you're likely to find it less "easy to use" than iPhone.

That being said, perhaps an exception to this, or at least an addendum, is that I personally find the iPhone UI atrocious. Once you get it, it's fine, albeit limited and annoying. But having used Android, it's so much more intuitive. I've played with WP7 a bit and really didn't like that either, but it wasn't enough experimenting to say whether I preferred it over iOS. I'm curious to try more since some people do rave about it, but ultimately I'm pretty sold on Android as a base platform. The trick is getting the right phone, right manufacturer, right carrier, and that's a lot of combinations to get right.

So perhaps in summary: Android has higher potential for awesome, iOS has more consistent execution of good-to-awesome. And WP7 doesn't sell enough to matter. ;)

Ahh, one of my favorite videos. Funny to see it resurface, I recall it "going viral" a few years back. Great (and amazing) stuff! It's like the owl version of cephalopod mimicry.

I've never seen this, only a prompt that asks me to restart chrome because its been a while and theres an update waiting to be installed.

Likewise. Are you sure it actually works the way you think it does?

Click the volume icon in the system tray then Mixer. You should see most *running* apps shown with their own respective volume controls. Set the volume the way you want it per-app, it will remember the setting between sessions of that app and sessions of Windows. Of course you must have the app running to set the volume, so simply start an app you want to set volume for if it's not showing up in that list. There may be other reasons it would not show up in the list, but pretty much all apps I've ever wanted to control have been there. A very nice addition to Win7.

Sounds like you're using TreeSheets more like a mind or idea mapper than a pure "note taking" app, eh?

Rightnote sounds interesting. Shoulda linked it though :D This one? http://www.bauerapps.com/RightNote.html

Did anyone *really* think HP buying Palm was going to work out? It seemed ridiculous at the time (to me at least), so I'm not surprised to see this happen. Sad? Maybe. But I can't help thinking, if Palm is so great, if WebOS is so great, why isn't it succeeding? Not to say it doesn't have some good ideas, but as a whole is it better than alternatives? Then again I think a lot of stupid things are being done in the mobile space right now (Nokia hitching their pony to Microsoft? Yeesh).

So much wasted time and money. I agree with Zaine - if you're going to just make a token effort, don't bother.

Ahhh, AskSam! My dad used that for years, kept tons of info in it. I never really tested it myself, but it always intrigued me because of his singular devotion to it. Is it still being developed/support?

Living Room / Re: when is a cable not a cable - when it's a DVI-D
« Last post by JavaJones on August 19, 2011, 04:39 PM »
It's not so hard to make such a cable but it does cost money so it's just not reasonable to expect a cheap £5 cable to do high resolution over longer distances. Monster Cable may be a complete rip-off, but they're not totally wrong in that cable quality *does* affect signal transmission length. Where the BS comes in is that it will "degrade your picture quality" with a digital signal. The reality is it either works or it doesn't, as you found. :D

Thanks for being so supportive of your users here, this is really impressive from a freeware developer. Honestly I would drop KMP for LA on that basis alone, as long as all the major features I need are there. I *like* the extreme customizability of KMP, at least in principle, but I have to admit that I don't always know what I'm doing with it and do sometimes find it hard to fix some problems that I know KMP can resolve, but I don't know the right settings. If something "just works" as well or better than KMP, with fewer settings, that's good enough for me.

I hope to get another look at LA in the near future. Your RC3 post will remind me, hehe.

And by the way, as I said before, your English is fine. :)

Living Room / Re: Google to Acquire Motorola
« Last post by JavaJones on August 17, 2011, 03:16 PM »
Except that Android already surpassed iPhone in mobile phone sales this year...

No, I think they're mostly doing this for patent defense. The number of mobile-related lawsuits in the past year and a half alone is staggering. There are some amusing (or scary, depending on your perspective) infographics out there that paint the picture pretty clear:
http://flowingdata.c...ile-patent-lawsuits/

If Google didn't do something that could, potentially, benefit all Android phone manufacturers, then each of the separate manufacturers would have to do so, and likely end up using their patent acquisitions (or back-room deals with those bringing the suits) against their competitors. It remains to be seen whether Google will do the right thing and actually help their multiple hardware manufacturing partners rather than just turning Motorola into a "1st party" juggernaut, but I'm cautiously optimistic. After all, Google makes the vast majority of their income off ads and product placement, hardware is low margin by comparison. What they really want is just to get their ad platform in front of as many eyeballs as possible, and Android is a great way to do that.

Making Motorola into essentially a monopoly in the cell phone (or at least Android) market would also likely turn up the heat on antitrust investigations that are constantly being talked about against Google, and I'm sure they don't want that either. Bottom line, I think it would be foolish for them to use Motorola as anything other than a defensive weapon. And as a defensive weapon I reckon it's pretty solid.

Free? Not going to get me with just that. Walk out the door without going through the cashier? YES. Make my experience better and you have me. I'll gladly trade some "privacy" about my shopping habits for improved services, at least in some/many cases. But that's me. Everyone is of course free to make their own choice.

I hear you, those "intangibles" can actually have a big influence on me as well. I have always hated that the KMPlayer dev wasn't that accessible (in English) and now with Pandora.tv owning it, I'm also a bit uncomfortable with that. I tried PotPlayer but it didn't really work for me even though it was nice to see more rapid development again. Honestly something like Splash is a beautiful attempt to simplify this whole thing while bringing it in to the modern age (full GPU acceleration, good scaling and other effects), but it falls short in other areas like format support and is missing a few too many options. Light Alloy seems very promising, especially now, given an active and accessible dev with English speaking ability (and willingness? hehe). I use The KMP not because I'm totally happy with it but because I haven't found anything better...

I tend to agree with vlastimil. While I, as a power user, don't necessarily prefer automatic updates, it is a good thing for the vast majority of users *if* it can be implemented properly. By proper implementation I mean that it will never restart the browser or computer without the user's consent, it will never break extensions or if it does it will ask the user if that's ok *and* allow them to delay update for some time, and finally that the test cycle prior to pushing new updates is comprehensive enough that the vast majority do not have any "weird problems" and need to wait to see if it's a "good update". Really we have learned to compensate for the bad habits of our software publishers and hopefully that does not have to last forever.

Regarding extension compatibility, I believe Mozilla has at least a partial solution with the Add-on SDK and changes in how Firefox handles plugin version compatibility:
http://blog.mozilla....lity-rapid-releases/
and more on that:

Sadly, I have to agree with everyone bemoaning the difficulty of setting up and *maintaining* RoR. My current solution has been to just use a RoR-oriented web host (which can also do PHP, etc. it's just that they take care of the harder part of doing RoR). So far I've had no major problems running Redmine and other RoR projects. But this is not an appropriate solution for many. RoR really needs to mature as a platform if it's going to continue to gain popularity, particularly outside the coder/web hacker scene.

Yeah I read about this a while back. Jobs himself did a lengthy presentation to the city of Cupertino in which he explains in detail how great it would be for the city to have this facility there (video on Youtube most likely, I'm too lazy to look, heh). I like the god-like rays in the pic above though...
