emeditor here.

I would probably have bought emeditor at some point if they hadn't stopped offering lifetime licenses, but I can understand why they did it.

I'm looking forward to trying the Digg reader when it appears

http://blog.digg.com.../digg-reader-rollout

Looks nice and simple, but like the rest of the web offerings, going freemium at some point.

It is probably worth making the distinction between cloud storage, syncing, and backup here (although some of these companies are trying to cover more than one area).

Storage usually means you upload files and then you are able to access them from other devices. The cloud acts like a USB drive you always have with you.

Syncing is often a group of files or folders that are automatically uploaded to the cloud every time you make a local change, and downloaded every time you (or somebody else) made a change on another device that has the same files synced. The cloud works as intermediate storage, giving the illusion that the synced files are the same on all devices.

Backup services keep a copy of important files from your computer in the cloud, and make sure the cloud is synced to reflect any changes you make, but keeping backups over time so you can restore any files that were unintentionally changed or deleted (but there is no syncing the other way, and only one source). Here it works a bit like making a regular backup on DVDs.

Amazon offers storage only. DropBox is a good example of storage and syncing. CrashPlan is backup only. SpiderOak seems to do all three.

There is a whole range of options that give you different trade-offs between security and ease-of-use.

Something like Tarsnap is probably very secure, but not that easy to use on Windows. At the other end are a lot of the services mentioned in the Help me choose an online backup service thread on this forum.

I think SpiderOak is a good compromise between security and usability.

Personally I use CrashPlan, partly because it runs as a service and can back up other accounts on my computer besides the one I am logged in on (not sure if SpiderOak have implemented this yet), but also because I think the 100 GB increments in data make SpiderOak too expensive (I am paying $60 for 80 GB instead of $100, and if I had 101 GB I would still be paying $60 instead of $200).

My concern with Feedly is that they are pulling in as many people as possible without telling them exactly how they will be monetizing the service after google reader shuts down. They have said it will be a freemium thing where certain features will be available only on a subscription, but what features? At least some of the others have the premium stuff in place already, I fear some people will be surprised once Feedly implements this.

I love FeedDemon, and was a registered user of a previous version. It really is one of the most slick desktop clients. But since it's end-of-life'd, it probably won't be updated to support whatever comes down the road.

I imported all my feeds to RSSOwl for a start, which works okay, and then I will probably see what features end up in Feedly premium and see if it's worth it. I would personally prefer a web based reader.

Notepad2 has been my quick editor for years :-*.

I've always been using two text editors, because I have two distinct use cases. One is a single file editor for those quick open - change a few lines - close jobs. I use it mainly as the Total Commander F4 editor. It must open instantly and close again on pressing Esc. Notepad2 fits perfectly here because it has just enough features for programming to be useful, and not anymore, so it's lean and fast.

The other is an editor for projects. It must make working on projects easy, and should have more advanced programming support, like auto-completion. At the moment that is Sublime Text 3, because the FARR-like navigation and multiple cursors feel natural to me.

I agree with what f0dder and others have said. I think perhaps the first generations of SSD had issues with wear, but the current ones (third generation I think?) have things in place to handle that and usually break other places.

And the performance gain is big, just make sure you backup.

I think one of the few free ones you could actually trust is the 2 GB free backup accounts you get from SpiderOak.

How long are you going to leave the old, outdated reviews for many of the text editor software up, before updating them?  I'm sure Ultraedit is quite good & you probably make $ for promoting it - that's fine.

I think you can rest assured nobody was getting money or otherwise being compensated for a positive review on this site. It is simply because it reflects the experience and evaluation of the reviewer at that time, given what the editors available were like back then.

If you're not going to be fair & up to date on the reviews, just take them down & only advertise Ultraedit .

The review was last updated seven years ago, and I agree that is showing. It is a huge effort to write a review like that, and I am afraid equally huge keeping it up to date. The official reviews which were a big part of DonationCoder in the first years, have not really been done since then -- instead the forums thrived and became the driving force of the site, and user reviews started to appear here.

You could argue that the old reviews should be taken down. On the other hand, they are marked clearly with dates, and point to the forums for further discussion (like these).

I would guess it is because people are hosting files not related to the projects created. This could be using it is a download service for non-OSS software, or maybe even illegal stuff.

GitHub does not provide binary hosting, which is why some projects have their downloads on SourceForge.
464
That's a nice upgrade -- some of the new features look sublime :P.
465
Even if their motives are honorable, there are situations where this policy could be problematic -- imagine posting a link to pay-per-view content, or posting an activation link for an account or a subscription service, or how about a link to remove content like the image deletion links imgur has.

Perhaps you are expecting too much technical accuracy from a side argument in a consumer article in a consumer magazine :-[.

Personally, I find the title more misleading -- "proper care and feeding" basically boils down to "it takes care of itself, just buy a big one".

I've used SoftMaker as well, and it's quite good.

The only problem I had with it was that the user interface is not available in as many languages as the other suites -- for instance there is no Danish translation. That's okay for someone like me who doesn't really care if the user interface is localized as long as the dictionary is, but I can't really recommend it to friends and family who are used to Office in Danish.

Be careful when you buy this, not all the games are on steam. I bought this as a gift and found out later that you get an Origin key for Mass Effect 2 :(.

My sympathies to the people who will be loosing their virtual estate here -- it is never fun when you invest time and/or money in an activity just to see it disappear.

On the other hand, I must admit there is a tiny cynic on my shoulder, who thinks that if you invest more time and/or money on pixels than you are comfortable loosing, in a free-to-play, and worst of all on facebook, then perhaps you have been steering towards a disappointment that was not entirely impossible to predict :(.

Living Room / Re: Recommend free image hosting site?

Simple, clean interface with lots of link options, and all it's meant for is a place to store stuff you want to link to.  The free version has ads, a 5MB per image limit and '6 months no views' deletion policy.  A pro account costs anywhere from $2.95 monthly to 23.40 per year (1.95/month) with monthly, 3 month, 6 month, and yearly contracts, has no ads, 10MB per image limit and no deletion.

Looks nice, though I can't seem to find a description of the different accounts or the restrictions on the free use anywhere on the site?

I was playing around with some of the alternatives, and noticed something strange in the reviews of the feedly app for chrome on google play -- pretty much all reviews on the first two pages are exactly the same two comments from different people:

Feedly has managed to create a visually appealing RSS reader, that also focuses on a clean simple visual style that is intuitive to use.
and
Since the announcement of Google Reader being discontinued, I have enjoyed this easy app. It also has a simple, attractive interface. Highly recommend.

Does anybody know how this happens?

I am not saying it's some form of scam, but I wonder if it could be something like a 'feature' in the app that lets you post a review if you like it, and suggests some standard quote like this.

Isnt 50usd too much for a email client? I am refering to the bat.

The pro version is €32, which is roughly $40, but I still think that's too much, unless you have very specific needs that the free alternatives do not meet.

DonationCoder has had a 50% discount running for years, I think it might still work.
475
I think it's supposed to be a good option. Back when I was looking for a desktop search solution, I went with Archivarius 3000, mainly because Copernic did not support indexing of The Bat! e-mail.
