PictureRelate might be what you are looking for...

Ironically, I just uninstalled PictureRelate a few days ago after having had it installed for the last couple years. It is interesting software, but I never used it so I decided to uninstall.

When I first discovered it, I thought I had found "the one" due to all its variable settings. However, IMO it didn't measure up to other software mentioned in this thread. Despite my persistence in trying to ascertain the "correct" settings, I found that PictureRelate misses image dupes that the other softwares find.

PictureRelate is far from the fastest, leanest app to find similar images. Also, I didn't want to save its huge database files, but the app steadily drove me insane asking, asking, asking "do you want to save?". I finally decided to get an automatic button pusher app to answer that annoying question.

Certainly a unique program worth checking out, but not for me.

General Software Discussion / Re: Search with Bing

Yep, I think you got that riddle solved.8) But still no DC search results with Google. In contrast, other search engines such as Bing and Ixquick seem to find DC comments.

I still use Google occasionally, but I'm frequently turning to other search engines.

With Example 2 I mentioned, this thread (ie. Search with Bing) is now showing up in Bing results just hours after I posted the comments. It seems Bing is aware of DonationCoder and updates quite often.

Google seems to find very recent comments when I use it. There might be a question about how the search is done.

Well, I'm not discounting user error, that's for sure.:-[ But I cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong with Google.

Example 1: search the following phrase- "The more from it you take, the more it becomes."
Example 2: search the following terms- antidupl doublepics

In each case I'm getting DC results with Bing and no DC results with Google. If you're getting different results, then I obviously have something messed up.

I'm curious why I can use Bing to search DonationCoder and find comments written very recently (mere days ago), but Google seems blissfully unaware of recent activity (several months?) on this forum. Anybody else notice this? :tellme:

Thanks MilesAhead. This is small, useful, and simple to use software. Topmost Toggle is a keeper as well.

I also don't use iTunes, but this article entitled "iTunes Damage Control" strikes me as a nice reference:

My preference with Universal Viewer is to enable the "Show Explorer context menu" so I always have that option available whether I'm using a file manager or Explorer. I haven't chosen to set any file associations to Universal Viewer, but it still stands "ready" to deal with whatever file type I encounter.

With or without the navigation panel, Universal Viewer seems to be a very useful app to have available.

... Universal Viewer ... this brilliant freeware multi-format player.

How many plugins are necessary / what can it do by itself ? Isn't it $23 ?

http://www.uvviewsoft.com -very bottom of page:
License: the main application is freeware; the add-on "Navigation Panel" is shareware (requires registration)
System requirements: Windows All (32-bit), MS Internet Explorer 4.0+

I've been using the freeware version without the optional navigation panel for the last few years. Unlike in the past when I had to use Lister plugins to get video file types (and also .swf) to play, I installed no plugins in the current Univeral Viewer and everything (.avi, .flv, .mpg, .wmv, mp4) I throw at it plays out-of-the-box. :) The name ("universal") is accurate as this app can play/view many different file types--not just video files.

General Software Discussion / Re: Has anyone tried Perfect Utilities ?
« Last post by sajman99 on December 26, 2009, 01:50 PM »
Yes, we are fortunate to often have different installation choices. However, there are many software sites that link only to the standard install version which is the "loaded" version with all the toolbars and crapware included. Unfortunately, the average user is sometimes unaware and gets suckered by the opt-out trickery.

...All the files play on FLV Player with no problems...Ideas?

If the .flvs play on FLV Player, the odds are quite good they will play on KMPlayer as well (sorry- I don't use Light Alloy).

Also, I recently updated Universal Viewer and discovered it plays .flvs flawlessly. I got the UV portable build, and I cannot give enough positive comments about this brilliant freeware multi-format player.

I saw recently (and now cannot remember where :-[) that the install version of Glary Utilities was now adware which "offers" to install ASK Toolbar. I honestly don't know for sure as I no longer use that app--all I'm saying is be careful!

AntiDupl.NET has been updated to version 1.4.0.0.

However, IMO it really isn't a significant step forward. The columns are now draggable, but out-of-the-box they are scrambled (in reverse order I think ) requiring re-ordering to user preference.

More significantly, v1.4.0.0 seems much less responsive on my machine. When using the arrow keys to cycle through the matches, there is now a noticeable lag which wasn't present before. Seems like the entire results are "refreshed" with each tap of the arrow keys.

Your mileage may vary, but I'm sticking with the older AntiDupl.NET 1.3.0.0 for the time being.

What's the Best? / Re: Video conversion: What's the best (freeware or shareware)?
« Last post by sajman99 on December 23, 2009, 01:50 PM »
Not to be too pessimistic, but I cannot help but wonder if this type of trickery signals the end of "freeware". I mean, appreciation given to software developers is great and all, but it surely doesn't pay their bills. If some of these developers catch too much flack, I suppose many will just switch to shareware/payware. If this happens, freeware as a concept could gradually disappear. I really hope not. :(

Indeed, the list of freeware that "offers" toolbars and other crapware grows daily. I personally use or have used FormatFactory, Glary Utilities, Defraggler, CPU-Z, AppRemover, CCleaner, Recuva... Enough already, you get the idea--all this quality freeware is now "adware". In a time of global economic uncertainty, I guess it's not too difficult to understand that some developers will take easy money wherever they can get it--apparently even at the expense of their reputation.

btw Bamse, you're apparently correct opt-out has surpassed opt-in as the the default installation mode. When the heck did this happen?--I guess I was sleeping. ;D An opt-out default is clearly an insidious tactic--all I have to do is get distracted for a split second (phone, kids, TV, whatever) and then I have a mess to deal with.

On the main topic of video converters, I had earlier mentioned in this thread the tough choice between FormatFactory and Pazera Video Converters Suite. Well, I have to say the choice seems much clearer now. Also, the iWisoft Free Video Converter mentioned in this thread seems good, but it's a brand new tool without much feedback so far.

EDIT: btw I didn't mean all versions of the freeware mentioned are adware; as noted by Bamse there are sometimes adware-free versions of the software available (usually the portable build from what I've seen).

I haven't kept up with the development of PCLinuxOS but last I checked it delivered a hassle free out-of-the-box experience suitable for a Linux newb like me. I honestly wasn't expecting much when I tried it a few years ago, but PCLinuxOS just blew me away with its professional appearance and hardware compatibility. Also, updating software was very easy (IIRC) with PCLinuxOS. Anybody use this distro?

Bamse, thanks for the info on this installation trickery. Every time I turn around there's more good freeware sinking to this level. I'm not naive and I understand why this stuff is done ($$), but still it bothers me. Increasingly, freeware has its hidden costs.

IainB, I hope you didn't interpret my blabbering as indicating you did something wrong. Clearly, you are the innocent party here and I also would be extremely aggravated if I got any of this crapware on my computer. I agree with you 100% that the relevant issues are integrity and honesty-- so I cannot and will not be recommending FormatFactory any longer. Your posting here will likely save many folks from suffering the same misfortune.

@IainB:
Did you unintentionally leave the ebay junk/add-on enabled when you installed FormatFactory 2.20? Or are you saying you disabled that checkbox and still got infected with all that bundled junk. AFAIK if you steer clear of the ebay related junk at installation, you will have a clean install without any of the issues you have described. Problem is--they're kinda sneaky about it and put the ebay stuff at the end of the install where lots of people are just click, click, clicking away. It's truly a miracle that I haven't done that myself.

I don't have the latest FormatFactory 2.20, but I do have v2.10 installed. Based on your experience, I re-installed this version in Returnil (older version btw) so as not to infect my "real" system. I intentionally left the ebay stuff enabled when installing to see what holiday gift I would get. ;D What I got was a Chinese toolbar named the Baidu Toolbar embedded in IE, along with files in Program Files\Baidu\Toolbar and registry entries in at least three locations-- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Baidu\BaiduToolbar, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Baidu\BaiduToolbar\NoAD, and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Baidu\BaiduToolbar.

The v2.10 setup file was from the official site btw. Not cool, formatoz(FormatFactory)--not cool at all.

EDIT: just saw this link related to details on the Baidu Toobar.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: One year of IObit's malware protection for free
« Last post by sajman99 on December 19, 2009, 03:11 PM »
I forgot about this thread and just wanted to say I uninstalled IObit Security 360 a good while ago. I didn't want to believe the accusations, but I drew my own conclusions and certainly don't want to be perceived as condoning software theft.

If you are so inclined, you can "nuke" IObit software with BitRemover if you have .NET 3.5:
It has been widely reported that after uninstalling their programs a considerable amount of data will be left behind on a computer. We at T-Tools have created a program we named BitRemover that has been designed specifically to remove every last trace of the entries of IObit programs left behind if and when you had decided to uninstall one or more of these programs. Be aware that we do not in any way advise you to remove any one of IObit's programs.

Back when I uninstalled 360 via Add/Remove, sure enough it didn't uninstall cleanly >:( so this could be a useful tool for some folks.

Yep, I love this little space analysis tool. It seems Umberto is one very talented guy to create this app.

@IainB:
I think superboyac is referring to this DC What's Best thread which might give you some ideas about what folks are using to convert video.

I agree this free software looks good, but every time I launch iWisoft Free Video Converter it attempts to load their webpage in order to check for updates. Perhaps I overlooked it, but I don't see in the options how to set manual updates. I realize I can use firewall and/or HIPS to stop this behavior, but I still find it annoying for a non-security app to check/update without user consent.
473
I'm not ashamed (much anyway ;D) to admit I use an old open source app named Wilbur on my XP machine. I doubt it works on Win7, but maybe some talented coders here at DC can get the source and make it compatible. :tellme:

Wilbur may be old and plain-looking and officially "retired", but on my XP system he still works with blazing speed and accuracy. After indexing all my data for about 3 minutes, I can then use Wilbur as a file searcher (ie. Everything, Locate32, etc.) or as a full desktop/grep searcher. I particularly like that this little app isn't constantly thrashing my HD--I manually update when I choose to.

I have successfully searched .doc(x), .rtf, .txt, .htm, .mhtm with Wilbur--no idea on .djvu but I wouldn't be surprised if it worked. Wilbur claims to support .pdf (via pdftotext) but I didn't like the way it left temp files and substantially increased the database size so I no longer use it on .pdfs (especially now that File Hound works very well in that regard). Also, I should mention I don't search email so I've no idea about that capability.

btw I tried Wilbur's successor Wilma a good while ago, but I couldn't get it to function as a file searcher (IIRC) so I stuck with good 'ole reliable Wilbur.

Wilbur is now located here:  http://s3.amazonaws....ee/wilbur/index.html
successor Wilma is here: http://s3.amazonaws....a/en/help/index.html

Just remember first impressions aren't always accurate. When I first checked out Wilbur I distinctly remember thinking "I'm not using this outdated ****". Well, I've been happily using it ever since.
