What do you watch? I used to watch Lost to unwind, need successor.
But everything else seems super crappy (fringe, by Adams as well, is not as good as Lost).
Any suggestions?

Josh, I'm surprised that you are switching to adblock.
Can you ellaborate on your experiences? Does it really work? For me, it missed a lot of ads, but it seems you can right-click and set rules. Not sure if it's worth it.
How much footwork is involved to get adblock working to the levels of admuncher (which is no work at all!)?

Thanks

« Last post by urlwolf on May 30, 2009, 03:12 PM »
There's something very strange with trout and something else I install.
I tried it on XP 32, the window shows up in taskbar, but does not come to front.
same on windows server 2008 64.
I have no idea what could cause this!
I have to kill the window with right click + close on task bar.

I tried resolver one; not very stable, and chokes on largish files. A pity, because the idea is very good.
458
And no equivalent app for linux :(
pdf display/editing on linux is really not very good.
459
@MikeMcLoughlin: thanks, CSVed looks very good.
@tinjaw: good analogy; never thought of it that way. Right now,
data/model is mysql. which I have to dump into huge text files because I could not get the RMySQL package to work;
View/display The weak point of R. I miss conditional formatting in excel, quick sorts etc. Done in R, dumping to text files or clipboard and pasting into excel
Controller/Calulations R. Doing a good job.

I guess I just want the best of all paradigms and I cannot get that.

Thanks Fenix.
The installer fails for me (windows server 2008) ... it says cannot open file TOTALCMD for writing (!). If I kill the process, it still doesn't work. UPDATE: it does. Weird. Well, testing time :)

I do have a database :)
I still miss some things a spreadsheet can do.

I'm right now torn between different modes to analyze data.
Right now I'm R-centric.
But in R you do everything in the command line. all changes are logged, which is good. Spreadsheets are a big no-no in this community.

The rdbms community has different ideas about how to manage data.
Basically you get what you want a query at a time.

And of course, Joe six-pack does everything with excel.

I wonder if I'm not missing much of the attractive of a visual way to handle data. Color-code cells according to contents, zoom in and out with an slider, ... that kind of feeling. Very exploratory. Compare that to a command line where you do head(data) :)

Since emeditor and R prove that you can do lots of operations without placing things into memory (or screen) I see no reason why one cannot have a streaming spreadsheet that loads the parts you need on the screen really fast.

Doing operations by selecting block would generate the equivalent SELECT for the db... if you need one. There might be very fast alternatives.

I think there are many paradigms for data handling that are not that well explored. For example, comparing OO, RDBMS and RDF (linked data) is eye-opening. This is beyond the point I'm bringing here about a streaming viewer (btw GUIs for RDBMS do suck at this; it's not that hard!)... but still. Let me know if you want more info or if I'm not making sense at all. I have a paper in mind on Object-relational mappings that is very good, if a bit technical.

General Software Discussion / Re: The Best Of: text editors
« Last post by urlwolf on May 28, 2009, 06:51 AM »
Well, a text file of around 60-100mb (which I have to deal with often) does take a few seconds on any editor that puts it in memory. EmEditor is the only one that streams it.

I wish excel would do that too.

In fact, data analysis with large datasets is becoming more and more common. Just look at how big anything online is (databases). Even if one subsets the whole table that is to be analyzed, something in the order of megs can come out...
463
Do you know of any spreadsheet-like tool to open tables with millions of rows/columns?
I really like emeditor because it can open large files without placing them into memory.
If I could find a spreadsheet tool that did the same, it'd be great.

Thanks

General Software Discussion / notepad++ sticky searches?
« Last post by urlwolf on May 26, 2009, 01:18 PM »
Many notepad++ lovers here. Is there a way to have sticky searches?
That is, when all occurrences are highlighted, I want them to stay that way while I move around the text.
emeditor, hippo, vim etc do that. Is it possible?

Thanks

congrats, impressive work.

I think you can have the code folding (+ signs) without having the side panel open now.
I do agree that there are better ways to organizing sidepanels, and they are not that difficult to get working I'd say.
468
btw, I encourage anyone to have a look at the beta versions of emeditor. Lots of innovative features coming.
469
I don't think Ipython is .Net. It work on linux, and lives in launchpad :) , cannot be .net :)
That would be IronPython.

One note on emeditor...
The dev is pumping out features really fast.
He really pays attention to users.
Subscribe to the beta versions forum thread and you will see.

I love this kind of synergy between dev and users...

FileBox Extender2
PS Tray Factory

2Hyperionics is no longer developing, supporting, or hosting this GPL licensed application, and I have contacted them for a copy of the source and I'll host it myself if I have to.

App, I love this tool. I missed it so much since I moved to windows server 2008. If you got it to work on vista 64/windows server 2008 64... please shout!

Sorry skwire but I think I'm bringing up a worthy competitor.
Itunes Store validator Is the killer app for missing covers. And it gets 600x600 covers, from itunes (as high quality as one can get).
Disadvantage: you need to install itunes :(

I don't think adobe acrobat can do things Infix does. At least not as easily.
How's the rendering quality (and speed) of nitro and Infix
Can they be used as day-to-day pdf readers (with some nice editing properties)?
Maybe someone should review them and update the pdf reader quality thread?

This can be done on linux (X), but of course that says nothing about windows.
