General Software Discussion / best free rename utility for 2009 - which is it?
« Last post by brotherS on February 17, 2009, 06:01 AM »
After just reading in https://www.donation...index.php?topic=1146 that Bulk Rename Utility isn't updated anymore (just when I found some bugs, duh!), I want to ask you guys which utility you recommend.

It should be free, I don't need RegEx and I like it when I can use a program intuitively.

And it would be great if the author still updates it.

Arrrrgh! Yes, thanks, I did....  :(

I saw it being recommended in another thread and when I wasn't able to send the message I just posted in here because the topic was fitting best.

Having finally tried it, I was not able to send my message to the coder, error message below:

My message:
Hi,

someone over at https://www.donation....com/forum/index.php likes your program, so I just tried it for the first time.

I like it, and I found two bugs:
1) in the list of files, you can't type "www" quickly to jump to the first file named "www..." - instead you just move to the next file starting with "w..." every time you press the key
2) in the list of files, when you press the menu key on your keyboard, the context menu doesn't show up (should be the same function as clicking it with the right mouse button)

I'd like to see this fixed in the future, thanks!
If anyone would like to send it to him on my behalf, please do and post here that you did!

General Software Discussion / Re: Carbonite Online Backup
« Last post by brotherS on January 21, 2009, 01:46 PM »
I thought Mozy was all that - until they updated my client software automatically and I couldn’t connect anymore. Plus, in testing how to get it connected again they lost my 55 GB of backups. Refund!!
Eeeek!

BTW, I'm now using Jungle Disk and Amazon S3 - very good IMO.
I checked out http://www.jungledis...desktop/pricing.aspx - what are "requests"?

Requests
  $0.01 per 1,000 upload requests
  $0.01 per 10,000 download requests

Interesting topic! Being one of the first at DC to mention online backups (if my memory serves me right), I still didn't sign up for any service - yet! Again thinking about it now, being more and more fed up with juggling HDs...

Stumbled upon a security check done by well-known heise.de last year, and Carbonite and Mozy (both praised in this thread) were the ONLY 2 providers being tested who were offering protection against Man in the Middle (MITM) attacks. (See http://en.wikipedia....in-the-middle_attack for more info)

I'm interested in an update: how are your experiences so far? What do you like, what annoys you?

Providers who failed the test at the time (all promised to fix it): Online Backup 24, Steady-Backup (NTT Europe), iDrive, and BullGuard.

Haaa, cool idea!  ;D

And thanks scancode.

Another book I highly recommend is *As a Man Thinketh*!

You can get it for free at http://www.asamanthinketh.net/ (they just want your email address but they look like good guys). If that's too much for you, Amazon will gladly ship it to you for a few bucks: http://www.amazon.co...-Allen/dp/087516000X

"I have personally read As a Man Thinketh over 25 times. Timeless material." -  Mark Victor Hansen, co-author, the Chicken Soup books

“I read As a Man Thinketh once a year for over 15 years when I was in my 20s and 30s.” - Paul J. Meyer, recognized as one of the leading self-improvement authors of all time

“Some books are so good and meaningful that you read them again and again. Primarily because you know the substance and content is so important that you need to be reminded of what it has to say. As A Man Thinketh, by James Allen is just such a book.”  -    Book Review, Michigan Chronicle
Almost 2 years later, here's an update:

I feel awesome these days, and I partly credit As a Man Thinketh (AAMT) for that fact. Not much unlike Mark Victor Hansen (see quote above), I've been through it (reading it or listening to the audio book version) about 20 times now (the fact that it's rather short helps), it's the only book I ever read more than 3 times. Very powerful.

I recommended AAMT quite frequently over the last years, and of those who followed my recommendation (and told me about it), 100% thanked me later.

So... if you want more happiness and less suffering in your life, read it. If you are happy with the amount of suffering you got going for you, don't.

Living Room / Re: huge Google Calendar problem!
« Last post by brotherS on November 21, 2008, 03:42 AM »
Still no reply from Google, BUT something happened just shortly after the roll-out of GMail's new (great) Themes roughly 10 hours ago: ~8 hours ago I received the daily event summary for the 6th (!!!) of November. I then did *not* receive it for today, but received reminders correctly for the first scheduled event.

Let's hope it's finally fixed!

I now contacted Google's support, curious to see how quick (and how good) they are! :)
I must say I'm a bit disappointed... no reply yet, and it still isn't working. Still hope!

I'm not sure. Have you tried contacting Google?
No, and I'm not sure how and where would make most sense anyway. :-[

I'd start here: http://www.google.co...port/calendar/?hl=en

Or specifically this one:

If you've noticed that you're no longer receiving event notifications, reset the calendar's notification settings to resolve this issue. To do so, follow these steps:

   1. In the calendar list on the left, click the down-arrow button next to the appropriate calendar, then select Notifications. (Alternatively, click the Settings link at the bottom of the calendar list, then click the Notifications link to the right of the appropriate calendar.)
   2. Click the remove link next to each reminder set in the Event reminder section.
   3. Deselect any selected boxes in the Choose how you would like to be notified section.
   4. Click Save.
   5. Return to the Notifications settings page.
   6. Enable your desired notification options again.
   7. Click Save.
Thanks! I found the same information on their site by myself (because I only read the email notifying me of your reply before you edited the post - and not the post in the forum, hehe) and immediately tried it, but it's not working for me.

Living Room / huge Google Calendar problem!
« Last post by brotherS on November 16, 2008, 12:26 PM »
Hi,

I love Google Calendar! Or better: I USED to love it, because the 5th of November was the last day I received SMS and email reminders... :( Only popup reminders still work... I waited this long because I hoped the problem would be fixed within several days, but it seems not to be a wide-spread problem - at least I couldn't find any current discussions or news reports about it on the web.

What to do?

Well, to quote a funny TV scene I watched ages ago (a woman asking a psychologist how she could stop doing something that's bothering her getting this reply from him):

"STOP IT! JUST STOP DOING IT!"

Maybe not as inspiring as you hoped for, but I thought I'd share

I leave it open then and check the list every now and again - this is probably more suitable to me as I rarely see my desktop anyways!
Hehe, same here, that's another good point for my Google Calendar solution. ;)

This is to help me maintain a few items (probably no more than 10) that I want to keep in front of me - more like what's advocated by Mark Forster's Do It Tomorrow concept which I find more useful.
Hi!

I only read the book partially so far (and a while ago), so I don't recall any specific advice regarding 'keeping it in front of you', but what I like to do is to use Google's free online calendar. I put things on when I think I'll be able to do them. Benefits:
  • it's easy to move tasks around
  • it's free
  • you can even have it send you free SMS to your cellphone as reminders, also emails and pop-ups
  • it feels good to see the things that you actually *did* do

This idea would change the donation page into more of a multi-step wizard, where the first step asks the person to "self identify" themselves into a number of categories with nice images and short descriptions like:

Please choose the description that best matches you:

Just Curious!
Commercial User
Reluctant/Skeptical Donator
Limited Income Supporter
Deluxe Supporting Member
...

Nice idea :)

If you do it, I just want to urge you to use a descending order for the descriptions, starting with the most expensive one. I'm willing to bet your money it will make a positive impact!

General Software Discussion / problems with playing some FLV videos locally
« Last post by brotherS on October 17, 2008, 07:29 AM »
Hey folks,

I have problems playing some FLV videos. Zoom Player just crashes. It's not randomly, it's happening over and over again with the same videos. I tried to use the VLC media player as an alternative, but that one doesn't allow me to skip forward (it just stops to play then) and it's far behind Zoom Player in regard to controlling it with the keyboard only.

Any ideas?

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Google Chrome Wiki

Good idea!

I had to install Chrome last week because IE wouldn't let me print something important (and strangely enough I couldn't capture it with SC), and just a few hours ago I set Chrome as my new standard browser.

I hope they will collect less data in the future versions, for a 0.2 version I like it a lot!

Before I come to the topic let me say I found it funny to see that (as of now) you have virtually the same amount of forum posts and also joined DC only one month after me! 8)

brotherS : Do you know about Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) -- closely related to mindfulness approaches? it is a very interesting approach in psychology. You might like the approach, if you enjoyed Jill Taylor's conference and book.
Interesting... never heard of ACT, but I agree with its fundamentals (found on http://en.wikipedia....d_Commitment_Therapy), it's at least a good start:
As a simple way to summarize the model, you can say that ACT views the core of many problems to be due to the acronym, FEAR:

Fusion with your thoughts
Evaluation of experience
Avoidance of your experience
Reason giving for your behaviour

And the healthy alternative is to ACT:

Accept your reactions and be present
Choose a valued direction
Take action

Coding Snack Guidelines / Re: Email Notifier [ sys tray ]

There are several programs out there, but my recommendation is: don't use one. Such notifiers are proven to be highly distracting - if I recall correctly, it's more productive to smoke a joint in comparison, because you lose your train of thought frequently when checking what just came in.

Having the same problem with a company, I today faxed them back their newsletter with the repeated wish to remove me from their list, because mailing them didn't help (and there's no unsubscribe link).

Since I used an email-to-fax service I didn't notice that I was faxing 44 pages, taking half an hour to be sent over! :-[ I have no idea how much I will be billed for the transfer, but maybe *this* will get their attention! :D

Anyway, I now set up GMail to not show their newsletters in the Inbox - problem fixed (good enough). 8)
