General Software Discussion / Re: Installing Linux over ME, is it possible?
« Last post by dantheman on February 18, 2010, 10:10 AM »
Thanks Josh for writing in!

I presume keeping Linux isn't too hard (least i hope not)!

Keeping ME at par with AV/Antispyware programs is tough so i imagine that Linux is much more secure.

General Software Discussion / Installing Linux over ME, is it possible?
« Last post by dantheman on February 18, 2010, 08:47 AM »
Hi,

Friends of mine have a computer with ME on it.
As you know, it is just awful.

Was thinking of installing Linux over it in the hopes that it would become more stable and secure.
Is it possible?

If so, will Linux recognize the CDRW and USB ports?
Also, the fact that it's on a network it would also need to install the HP Printer drive right?

Thanks for your comments!

General Software Discussion / Re: Recommend portable word processor, please?

Although it is not specifically a word processor,
EssentialPIM has a portable usb version (free/shareware) that might suite your needs.

@Tomos,

My pleasure!

Yes, that was exactly the page of shortcuts i was looking for.
Thanks!   :)

On a different note,
anyone know of an addon that allows you to create and/or customise shortcuts?

Have been looking for a while a now.
Did find this info just a moment ago:
http://kb.mozillazin.../Keyconfig_extension

Right click menu is rather slim so i was glad to find this handy list of shortcuts "en français":
http://www.arobase.o...vier-thunderbird.htm
If someone can find an English version, i'd be glad to know of it.

+1 CompactHeader

GContactSync seems to be doing fine so far.

Lightning b1 seems to be holding okay too. Just came out not long ago. You can sync it with Google's Calendar.

Alfred Kayser's LittleBird and LittleFox are my favs for Tbird and Firefox. Very small but not too too small!

Bis to Tuxman, CleverCat and Curt!

Don't want to get too excited but...
although i didn't notice any improvement on startup, it seems to improve page rendering.
Time will tell.

BTW, did they tell you about the new movie called "Constipation"?

Yep. It's in the works but it won't be out for a while...  ;)

Thanks F0dder.

The link with explanations are too technical for me but your warning is a good reminder to being careful when dabbing with certain tweaks that may seem okay.

Did remove the /Prefetch:1 bit and restarted Firefox a few times without any noticeable change (although still good).
So, i guess i may have been just a tinsy bit too hyper about this possibility.
Seeing that i recently re-installed my notebook, that may had some impact too right?

It reminds me of days when the web is faster than others.
We tend to think the browser is the main reason (which can happen), but most of the time, it's just our phone line, traffic on the network and perhaps less "spurts" from the sun.
So many things can have an impact. It's not always easy to discern which is which.

Milesahead,

I tried that cmd tweak but nothing would change so i then tried the more "direct" registry one without any success.
Here's a snapshot:

The section seems to be none existent.

BTW, i'm not complaining about Firefox, it's just that i was wondering if i was the only one noticing an increase in startup speed with the addition as initially stated.

Still hanging in with XP Home.

I know it takes time on initial start up but generally speaking, i do find it speedier afterward.

It's impressive to see real geeks at work!

So, from what i can make of what you said.
It's something that could possibly help some folks.

Is it just me?

I found this tweak that seems to work at making Firefox load a bit faster.
Simply add a space and /Prefetch:1 to the target in program properties.

Can someone confirm i'm not hallucinating?

Actually, EPIM doesn't have a webclipper.
But, with Firefox you can save data and url from webpages in one clip.
Then export to your notes to .html format on Dropbox.
Grant you, it's not as neat as Evernote but if you work mostly from your desktop, it's a handy file to have when you're away.
Personally, i find EN to be slow online and the new desktop program to be clunkier.
Other users don't like the new desktop version either.

Does Skydive require Net Framework? will have to check system requirements.
I, on the contrary, don't have any programs that require Framework.
464
Yeah. I kind of got lost here too.

Besides, Evernote is going on with another version that requires Microsoft Net Framework.
Dat, i don't like very much.

I use EPIM now. There's a freeware version and save to Dropbox (2G).
MSN's Skydive with what is it, 24G of space might be an option to look at.

Congrats to you Mouser!

FARR is getting some well deserved recognition!
466
What am i talking about?!

Of course you can clip to Evernote with Opera (Google Chrome probably as well)!
Just install the EN "webclipper" to wherever you want in Opera.  ;)
Sheeshh!
467
There's Ubernote.com but you can't do as much as you can with Firefox.
At least for now.

General Software Discussion / Re: Anybody Here Use SeaMonkey (2.0)?
« Last post by dantheman on November 02, 2009, 10:15 AM »
Seamonkey does feel a bit archaic but, hey! who doesn't like the retro look sometimes?!

BTW, i just tested Alfred Kayer's LittleMonkey theme which isn't compatible with 2 yet (created boolean with extensions.checkCompatibility - set to false as you suggested) and it's not doing too bad! I did however notice a mild boost in resources but it's still under Firefox 3.6 b1 on my XP Home.

Tuxman, dat's a good tip!  Thanks!

BTW, i just checked resource usage and Seamonkey seems to be stable at using a third less than Firefox.
Thunderbird b4 uses just as much as Firefox. So, alltogether, you save quite a bit if using Seamonkey as browser and email client.   :)

Although i too have made the switch from Seamonkey to Phoenix Firefox a long time ago.
Seamonkey2 has proven to be quite impressive. Speed at startup and page rendering is just no.1

But, being able to test latest beta builds of Thunderbird and Firefox with:
"Nightly Tester Tools" to make the dozen extensions work,
http://www.oxymoroni.../web/firefox/nightly
I think i'll still keep on with TB and Firefox.

Thanks!

Now if i could find one that does it to Thunderbird too...

Did i miss something on this "version override"?
Is it not when you install from Mozilla's add-ons section or is it something you do in "about:config"?

I've just installed it over existing 3.5 and only 5 out of 10 extensions work.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Can't launch .odt files in 2.77.02

skajfes,

I thought any file should open with its' corresponding program by default.
Anyway, i right clicked on an .odt file and sure enough, there was no default program assigned to it.
Have assigned OWriter and it's okay now.

Thanks!
