Living Room / Re: What kind of tagging system would be appropriate for DC?
« Last post by Veign on January 06, 2008, 03:11 PM »
Since my forum is a testing ground for me I added the Tag Mod so if you want to check it out:
http://www.veign.com/forum/index.php

You will notice a new 'Tag' tab on the tab menu and a new tag bar at the very bottom of the post.

Why not build upon an existing tagging mod like:
http://custom.simple...ds/index.php?mod=579

This is a very typical tagging system as found on blogs and it works quite well - I use a system like this for my blog.

It does this.  You have full control over what characters are displayed and characteristics of the display.  All this is controlled in the Property Window.  You want to look at DisplayText and CustomText properties.

(sorry about the colors in the background of the image - my background colors are quite ugly for others to look at)

I reviewed a few things and what I will do is change the Font Packager, which I have never been totally happy with, to work with Zip files instead of the custom file format I developed.  What this means is you will be able to create and handle font packages (zip files of fonts) from within Cfont Pro.

It will be slick when completed.

I will give some thought about peeking inside of a Zip file to preview and install a font.  It may take a while, but sounds interesting enough to take on as a project.

PS: please add 1:1 screenshots on the page, and consider .png instead of .jpg.

The whole website needs a good overhaul and screenshots is a sore subject that I know I need to fix.  I have been putting it off but will try and get new screenshots up this weekend.

How would you want them handled?  Explain.

I have a free font manager called Cfont Pro that I would be willing to add requested features to.

Now c'mon... isn't this doing the same thing you just criticized me for above?

I never said you were wrong in the views you had on profanity and such.

I am trying to be a non-smoker in a auditorium of smokers.

I think its unfair to assign everyone else to one single group.

Please reference my tag line.  I ask you, "What's wrong with doing right?"

Why?  Are you saying everyone else is wrong?

I had written a lot more but deleted it since it was a reaction to your post and really served no purpose except venting.

identify the names of anatomical parts and intimate acts when we are discussing them in terms of a symptom of a legitimate computer-related problem?

You would be amazed at how many time this happens to me when fixing someone's computer or explaining how some code works to a client  :D

Extremes are easy as common sense will handle that.  Its the far left (or is that right) side of things thats tougher.  Those will pass through and some acceptance has to occur on both ends.

Should we setup an auto-tagging system where anything posted by Zaine is marked as NSFW / NSFM (not safe for Microsoft) -  :P

Ok, since Mouser is obviously looking at implementing a NSFW tagging system, then it seems that at least someone is opening the windows and turned on a fan, but let me offer that I think it is too narrow and robotic to make this a "Censorship -vs- Freedom of Speech" issue.  It isn't.  It is an issue of courtesy and consideration.  It is kindness.  It is choosing to care enough about someone else to modify your behavior to allow them to participate.

Again, where do you draw the line.  NSFW tags only work when the person creating the post feels its not safe for work.  What if I feel something is perfectly safe.

Typically NSFW is for nudity more than profanity and many tag as such.  Reason is profanity happens in a work place.

I think the NSFW tag needs to be used sparingly.  Imagine coming to a forum for the first time and seeing NSFW on numerous posts.  I think that would turn people away, and fast.

This is a terrifically good idea..  I've been wanting to beef up support for a tag-like system on DC and we could use the same system to allow posts to be tagged as NSFW and then let users opt out of seeing such posts.

But you fall into the same place where who determines what is not safe for work.  Lets say someone posted about PornTube with a description and a link.  Is that NSFW?  I would never think of it as since it contains nothing objectionable except maybe the word Porn.  If it is, then where do you draw the line?  Of course some things are easy but how do you handle the more extreme cases?

I think making it easy to tag is a good idea but you have to watch out if a mod can go back a tag a post where the author did not originally do so.

My quick thoughts

I have never been offended by anything that I have the choice to view - its just not where I stand on things.  I am very much open to the allowance of others to express their views and feelings and if I don't like I have the choice and power of what to do next.  Listen, respond, move on, its my choice.

Religion and politics don't bother me as I have my views (much stronger on the religion aspect as I am well on the side with science) but totally understand at how quickly a thread on these topics can degrade.  So, not allowing general discussion of these I can totally agree with.  But I would say a blanket statement about not allowing any threads on either of these topics can be dangerous as technology plays a role and sometime a very interesting role that members may like to know about.

DC is forum geared towards technology (in every aspect) and the YouPorn thread is just another post on what and where technology is.  Having or allowing open discussions are a good thing.  Marking them as NSFW or such is not a bad idea and also having a mod chime in if the thread has drifted too far of course may not be bad either.

Censorship is a slippery slope as what offends others may not offend some.  Like, Smeg.  Not sure how a word with very little meaning could offend someone (not belittling someones feeling, just trying to understand).  What about fark?  Should that be banned?  Where does it stop?  Where does it start?

Oh, and I get a kick out what Zaine posts on his blog.  For someone so smart to post exactly what he feels without worrying about PC is so rare to find.

Did I spend a lot of hours playing Boulderdash.  I still play it every now and again through Mame32.

I am in total agreement.  I won't download without some screenshots.  The reason for me is two fold: 1) Screenshots start to set trust in the application for me and 2) I am drawn to certain interfaces and looks and if I don't like the interface there is no reason wasting time downloading/installing
470
One thing that drives me crazy with application/software websites is a lack of screenshots.  The website is difficult and confusing to navigate.  I couldn't find any screenshots.  If there aren't any, or they are hidden, why?  I always a question an application that doesn't provide screenshots.

That's kinda cool.  I wrote on that would let you hide simple phrases inside of an Image file but think your method of hiding a file is a much better idea.

Coding Snacks / Re: What language is the best for a new programmer to start with?

I would recommend C#.  Really no point starting out learning VB, as its support on future Windows OS's are sketchy.  Plus learning C# opens up other programming languages where the syntax is similar.
