Your nephew should be very proud of himself. He had me fooled. I thought this was something fun & silly that you did!

Am I getting some sort of reputation?   :P

Ok, I may have suggested some of the titles and so forth. Anyone who reads CT will probably realise I love bad puns and silly name.

Professor wraith808 Pointless: Obscene Knave of Tinkling-on-the-Water

Pretty cool that he's into programming. :)  He's already into Java, so this recommendation is probably Pointless (:)) but there's a really good book I purchased for my son to get started (and his uncle used it too!)

Hello World!
Computer Programming for Kids and Other Beginners

They have pretty good sales on Manning from time to time; I believe I purchased the book and the pdf for $15.00 around Christmas.

Good one - I'll grab that thing. There's a big element of running before walking when it comes to computering these days IMHO. Would be a great idea to cover some more basics.

Ok ok ok sorry to the various complainants, especially App103 who of course immediately detected the inherent sexism that is rife amongst All Powerful Rules of Imaginary Places.

This is a small Java Applet which exemplifies a few useful basics: text input, button events, using the Graphics2D class and font metrics.

Thanks for giving it a go - you made a nephew of mine very happy!

I think that only happens if you pass mouser.

Mouser seems to have a monopoly on high numbers. Is there any truth to the rumour that if you pass him you can collect $200, or do you go to jail?

If you pass him you'd better see a doctor

At the end of the day, I know that I'm all done when my taskbar is empty again.
That's a pretty cool way to look at it actually...

Like it! :)

Thank you!

I guess I'm like a lot of folks here on DC, looking for ways to be more productive and organized. It's such a subjective, personal thing, but I must say I've picked up a few nice tips (and some nice software) from this site that have really helped.

And Divided a lot of Attention on here too ;)

I actually like working like that. I do quite a bit of support, and during the day one of my activities is triage.

When a request comes in it's either:

Do it now! (do it now)
Do today (so I hit reply, minimize and leave the email window on my taskbar)
Do tomorrow or later (so it goes into the CRM queue)

So I get quite a hefty build-up of email tabs and various browser tabs etc. for research. As I complete each one, I close everything related to it, which is very satisfying.

At the end of the day, I know that I'm all done when my taskbar is empty again.

Anyone have any experience with this thing:

I like some of its features, such as being able to use >4gb memory area under Windows 32 OSes.

Wouldn't that just either 'work or fail' - how does one then get the new letter? Well, without WMI...

Cycle through available drives.

Or you could use a marker file, (ie. a file with an uncommon name), and just check for existance on all drives.  The one it appears on gives you the drive letter, used to do this for batch files.  Has the advantage of not using external commands.

I like the simplicity. But what the effect be of cycling through all drives if there were disconnected shares over a network etc... would there be huge delay while this was happening?

Another thing I used in texter a lot was the advanced (script) option rather then the text option.
# - Windows key, ! - Alt key, ^ - Control key, + - Shift key, {tab}, {home} etc...

I looked though most of the docs and this thread, but could not see an option for this? Am I just missing it or does auspex not have this feature atm?

It does not have that feature (at the moment) - the way it's written means that I could indeed add this stuff if there's a demand

Off the top of my head, use dir to determine if a matching Volume Serial Number for the flash drive exists?

ie. User selects a directory on a flash drive, program calls dir to get the VSN and then can check for existance on subsequent copy/move operations.

Wouldn't that just either 'work or fail' - how does one then get the new letter? Well, without WMI...

Does it have the capability of using assigned directories on flash drives where the drive letter may change?

No...but I'm not sure how I'd go about doing that.

That's a WMI query and quite hassly to code.

Well, Vista, but I share the sentiment. Can we try borderless please old bean? Sorry to be a bit of an "Uncle Ted"

i think that has something to with the "Border Padding". see link below on how to reduce it. (the default size is '4').

http://cybernetnews....ss-in-windows-vista/

Yyyep, that's fixed it all right. Good one - I don't see anything that's been compromised by reducing that border padding to 1.

ps:
would it be possible also te give users the possibility to choose to write the calculation immediately after the calculator key?
I prefer this key \\cc2*3 (no space between key and calculation)
and not \\cc 2*3

It's all possible my friend  8) and I greatly appreciate your input. At the moment I'm working on some other small items requested by donors, but rest assured I will add this one to redmine and it will appear as a feature soon.

Timns Apps / Re: Auspex Suggestions
« Last post by timns on February 06, 2011, 03:24 PM »
A couple of issues that I encountered:

1. auto-correct of com with compatibility messed with my entering URLs!

2. on my win 7 64 bit system, Auspex notably slows down shutdown

1. Good one - I can look at maybe preventing completions being triggered if they match certain patterns (e.g. url's and email addresses)

For now, you could increase the length of the completion trigger from 3 to 4:

hank.jpg

But having just tinkered with the word 'completion' and FireFox, I'm not totally sure what may be happening to you. Can you

a) Install 1.2.2.98
b) Explain a bit more please?

2. That's a new one. When Auspex closes, it simply writes a small xml file to your appdata folder and slips away. I can add a bit of logging if you would not mind running a debug version for me.

\\cc --> is my calculator key
p.e. 2*3=\\cc 2*3
it writes the 6 after the "="
Now I have to write this:
      2*3= \\cc 2*3
and remove the space between "=" and "6"

Make sure the 'Erase trigger' for your calculator key is checked - that should then work as you want.

Texter has the feature "instant triggering"
so when I write  the city name Ha\\ssloch "\\ss" is instant replaced by "ß"

As of the next build, so does Auspex

Ha\\ssloch -> HaBloch (you'll have to imagine the proper Eszett character there)

... without any 'trigger' characters required.

Other users: don't worry, this is a new item type (so-called 'Fast Replacement' so you won't get any surprises when using the normal Replacement mechanism.

EDIT: oh blast, the forum does still not support unicode!
