put it at the beginning Inbox OR FollowUp ...
could you though introduce them as sub-items to they same grid?

If you talking about inbox items, they are created without any parent assignment. No parents -> not a sub-item. If you assign parents to them, then yes.

Yes! But I didn't bother... I have an Intel integrated graphics card in an old Centrino notebook and I decided that for now I'm not interested in splitting the 64MB of shared memory between the two displays. I mean, I'm sure it would work, but I figure there's not much point getting an expensive secondary monitor until I've verified that it will work! I'm too lazy to go 10 minutes up the street and plug my friend's Samsung monitor into my notebook to see what happens.
I have a 4 year old centrino with integrated graphics and I can guarantee you that working on dual-monitors is beautiful (64MB is plenty unless you're doing games. My laptop has 1400x1050=1.5Mpix, the external has 1600x1200=1.9Mpix. Total is 3.4Mpix. At 32bit per pixel, that comes to a total of 14 MB... well under your 64MB). I saw not difference in performance, Windows manages dual screen beautifully, and that 21" samsung 204B is wonderful in landscape and portrait mode.  :-* :-*

That's because when creating a new grid, if the grid name corresponds to the name of an existing field, SQLNotes automatically sets the grid source to that field.

But don't forget, data and UI are separate things in SQLNotes.

So if you delete the Inbox grid, the inbox data still exist. And the inbox data can be displayed in more than 1 grid. You could for example decide to show the inbox items along with other items in the ToDos grid (add " OR Inbox" to the source and perhaps to the filter)

I hope that this is clear as mud (or as slushy winter streets)  :-[

It's one of the grids. If not, create a new grid and name it Inbox (or select from the list when creating)

The daily build is always available here:
http://public.sqlnot...t/download/sqlnotes/
Last one is dated jan 12th 2008

[edit]
Current build has only 1 major bug: If a grid contains more than 20 columns or so, it will not open. If users experience this problem, please report it to me. This is fixed in the one to come this week  :P

There are few minor bugs, of course. A bug-tracker system is being put in place with the following twist:
  • Users will be able to use SQLNotes to sync with the bug-tracker and see bug list/status right in SQLNotes !  8)

@Armando:
Using MSWord as the HTML Editor is an excellent idea. Making a full featured editor is a big job which I'd like to postpone if I can. Preliminary test seem good. I can create a word document in a window and load text into it. Menus are OK too. Main thing left to fix: docked toolbars do not show.

I'm having some bugs with the html pane.  The problem with the enter key is still happening.  Also, I just entered something in the html pane, and the pane kind of froze, and the same content appeared when I clicked to other items.  Finally, I clicked to another grid and it went away.  Then, I came back to what I typed in the html pane before, and it wasn't there anymore.
Enter key: see https://www.donation...32.msg95964#msg95964
Lost content: I'll keep an eye open for it. If you can reproduce it, forward the info to me.

Correct

You see, it would be easy just to change to that mode. However, I can see cases where one would want it linked to the grid data source, so I need to support both (so need to add some UI for it)

>Wouldn't it be better if i could take the columns from the existing transcript grid (including the parent items which do not have grades) and be able to use them in a pivot table?

Yes columns are no problem, the issue here is which items to take?
---------------

Unfortunately, this is rather complicated. The pivot needs a data source.

One possibility, would be to create a pivot based on the selected items, however it would be complicated when users add items.

Another possibility would be to allow users to set the data source of the pivot (currently it is set automatically). I think that pivot table/chart views will help as far as this issue is concerned.

[edit] After thinking about it, I could use the current item list as a datasource. I'll see how this could work [/edit]

Forgive my ignorance, but is there some particular reason why this is bad?
Once installed, users (good and malicious ones) should not be able to access the program files folders. That way, less chance that something will go wrong. That is the theory. All program data, should use application data/program name/...

Does it have to flat for the pivots to read the information?
No it doesn't need to be flat. Some explanation is required here. Items exist independant of the Hierarchy. I like to say that items are like individuals. The fact that you have parents or children does not change the fact that you are a person. The same in SQLNotes. To determine what the pivot table of a specific grid can see in terms of items, set hierarchy, context parents and save item states to Off. Those items are the only ones which "belong" to the grid. The rest were added to help you manage your information.

Pivot table/chart views will be possible later on. Right now, you need to open the grid first. So setting a new grid source to CourseGrade will do 2 things for you:
1- get you the grade
2- isolate the actual courses from the summary parents (semester, year, etc)

I hope this helps.

This, imho, is retarded. NO APPLICATION SHOULD INSTALL TO C:\. Not in the modern day and age. Program files exists for a reason, as a single place for installed applications. GemX just made a very big bonehead move.
I suspect that they had problems with getting their app Vista compatible and instead of making significant changes, decided to get out of the Program files folder altogether. But this is pure speculation on my part (I was also shocked when I read that).

Developer's Corner / Re: Best way to track the time you spend on each project
« Last post by PPLandry on January 13, 2008, 11:12 AM »
SQLNotes (thanks Tomos!) is a perfect tool to keep track of time spent on projects. You can view the work done by day/week/month, etc, you can filter on projects and view the work done chronologically or by project.

Supports equations to calculate time spent from start-stop times, cost, etc.

Also included is pivot tables/charts to compute the work done (and/or to be billed) per project, per month/year (Pivot requires Office 2000+ installed)

Detailed report of the work done is exportable as HTML and XLS for reporting
www.sqlnotes.net

Best of all, it is free while in beta. 1.0 release is planned in Q2 2008 with a very affordable $49.99 introductory price for a personal licence. (FYI I'm the main designer)

Wow Armando, another great post! I'll need to get that 36" monitor to view it ;D (or turn my 21" to portrait mode)

I agree with most of what you wrote. URp is definitely a much more polished product (being in version 3) than SQLNotes (beta). I'm getting close to the end of the feature addition phase of SQLNotes and will then concentrate on polishing it before version 1.0 release.

Again, I hope my post on the GEM/X didn't come across as being negative regarding URp. URp is a great product. IMO SQLNotes and URp have different objectives and can actually complement each-other. Being both database-based, each could eventually pull information from the other (much like SQLNotes being able right now to pull information from SQL Server databases)

Living Room / Re: H E L P !!! I lost a spreadsheet!
« Last post by PPLandry on January 12, 2008, 09:59 PM »
I closed my spreadsheet and never saved it and for some unknown reason when the dialog came I chose close without saving.

Is there a way to get that file back?  Is there a temporary hiding somewhere?

TIA!
If the file was opened from an email client, it is saved in a temp folder. It should stay there quite some time.

If you created it, and true backups are not enabled (file>save as>tools>general options: for 2002 at least), you can't use the backup referenced earlier. That one in only in case of crash. It is deleted on file>close.

After all these years of pseudo word and excel integration, the two behave so differently  backup management is just one example of this.  >:(

No need to apologize. I understood, it's actually Pierre's words that it's free, but he means that it's free to use now, while we shareware veteran users still call it trial :)

Actually I downloaded about two times months ago, and it never worked on my system. This is the first build that works for me, and it already looks way more complete than the older ones. It's very powerful but also steep learning curve. I'm a happy UltraRecall user, no need to change, but SQLNotes might be hard to resist (the inner child needs to play).
Yes, I tend to write: free while in beta... which does translate to a trial with an undetermined end date  ;)

Glad to see that it runs on your system. I'm not very well versed in URp [edit] I purchased it but did not find the time to really try it out. I do follow the forums though to learn the "terminology" [/edit], but other URp users have mentioned that once the SQLNotes underlying concept is understood (basically the same as Ecco Pro + some additions of my own), it is easier to grasp than URp, simpler. But again, this is not my own experience, but only what others have said.

Attention all... I created a Wikipedia page to explain what SQLNotes is. The page is not very different from pages of numerous other software.

However for some reason (I know very little about Wikipedia rules/regulations), it has been marked as proposed for deletions in 3 days. One reason given is that only one person contributed... hence the appeal to all to add to the page. Thanks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sqlnotes

p.s. grap a reference of what you write (and put it ironically into SQLNotes if you wish) in case the deletion is eventually done.

If I could summarize in one word, it would be : Yes (to all you said)... but I'll respond one by one later on!

Having studied human vision for a couple years (in another life), it is always best to have an environment with similar light levels. Otherwise, the eye has to set its adaptation level which takes 30sec to 2 min to fully adapt (i.e. entering in a cinema). The same when going from dark to light

A dark background has a light level much lower than the rest of one's environment (desk, window, paper (also white), etc), so in such situations, the human vision will be in constant adaptation between the dark screen and the rest of the environment. Not ideal at all.

I work with black text on white, partly for this reason.

More for pivot tables:
Can I have the pivot tables auto-hide?  Can I have more than one open at once?  Can I save the pivot tables somehow?  When I close the pivot table after I had docked it horizontally split, when I reopen, it opens full-screen again.  Is there a way to save the last used setting?
1- To open the same pivot more than once, open the grid more than once and then show the pivot for each one. To open a grid more than once, shift-click on the grid button
2- Grids and pivots currently open in the tab-workspace. There are improvements coming to grids and pivots:
  • Pivot grid/chart views: currently you must open the grid to then open the pivot. You'll be able to open the pivot directly
  • Combo-views: a view with any number of grids/pivots arranged as you wish. Configuration will be saved
