Microsoft ICE was a minor part of some other, bigger project, and has not been updated for more than a year. Might never be.

Curt: just use windows' built-in "safely remove" feature, no need for an extra app for that. But it is dangerous to just yank out your stick... I wouldn't even consider doing that anymore. Also, as an advantage to always doing things the proper way :), you can set the properties of the USB disk to "optimize for performance" which can mean tremendous speed boost for file operations on those devices.

I think this was a contradiction, f0dder. Window's 'Safely Remove' is based on cache and prohibits Optimize For Performance. It is one or the other: Optimize For either fast but safe removal, or for fast working speeds.

I should add that my price ended at $92 because of VAT and a $10 "OCR upgrade assurance" (whatever that might be). This price made me a little sad.

Also, the reason for Nitro's slow launching is of course, that it doesn't have a speed launcher placed in Start! hahahadobe.

I was looking at Nuance and was tempted, but the price tag kept me from even trialing it.

"I am LUCKY"??!! Wow, I will read those words some more times!

Thankx, to both of you. I have been offered 'USB Safely Remove ' for free several times within the last couple of weeks, but didn't take any of the offers. Now that I understand that I should have, it is not free any more! Sigh sigh.. But of course, if I really am LUCKY, it should be offered for free quite soon, shouldn't it?

USB Safely Remove is one I always use and would miss. I haven't seen an alternative that I would use instead. Works simply, saves me time.

Can someone explain to me the need for such a program? If I want to add some USB drive / stick / printer, etcetera, I put in the plug, and if I want to remove the thing, I pull out the plug - and has done so for many years. To my understanding this is the very concept of Plug&Play. What is the problem with this?

The time I appreciate my desktop-folder solution the most is, when I have installed a new program and it creates a shortcut (on the desktop) with a name beginning different from the program's name. As an example, the common but stupid habit (original from Microsoft?): "Launch Babylon". Now who the f#©◊ is going to look under "L" to find a name beginning with "B"??? It may be a really fine program, but the naming of this shortcut was so STUPID, it made me shiver; I couldn't find the bloody icon on the desktop!

In a folder this will never be a problem. Quickly change the listed order, with a single click, and Voila!, the newest is the first to see.

I think programs like Fences and Desktop Icon Toy are great if the user has no more than the (72) icons the (1024x768) desktop has natural room for. If the number of icons is like it is on my desktop, well, I have chosen not to see any icons at all, but to have a folder link in my Quick Launch bar. This way I can see ALL of the icons, no-one is on top of another one; and they all come in the proper order. I think a shortcut to the desktop's folder is much more handy than the desktop itself. And this way the desktop sure is a lot prettier to look at :-)

If you don't have too many to convert, one at a time, an free online solution is http://www.hamienet.com/midi2mp3

A fine onboard $30 solution might be 'Direct MIDI til MP3 Converter'
or have a look at http://download.cnet...%3DWindows%2CWebware

- yes, Mike, but I was concerned with the 400 other icons...  ;D

The text in the box sounds to me as if it only concerns the (approx) five system icons. Am I wrong (again)? Anyway, deskicons.exe is an excellent program, and is only 1½ kb!!!

Yesterday I updated Desktop Icon Toy to version 4, and when I tested it, I saw all the icons on my desktop and was reminded of a small but necessary, well, a must-have program for Windows: deskicons. On 2000 and on XP it was fairly easy to hide the desktop icons, but on Vista it isn't. Except if you have this program. One Run, and they are hidden, one more Run and they will show. The program closes when the job is done.

I don't know if hwtan wrote this program himself, but I have not been able to find deskicons.exe anywhere else, so maybe he did.

 _* deskicons.zip (0.59 kB - downloaded 353 times.)

Edited:
I am using it on Vista 32-bits.
[hint] It would be nice to know if it also works on Win 7, and on 64-bits. [/hint]

- thanks.

I am trying it now, and can surely confirm that it can handle a lot more file types now, on Vista, than the last time I tried it, on XP or Win2000. However, I cannot see how it can be sufficient without the navigation panel. It feels awkward, without. Isn't it supposed to replace Explorer, or are you setting it as default for many file types?

I am on 32-bits Vista.

I must have:

IrfanView as a viewer, and for image resizing, and for moving pictures. The in-build links to my fav' editors is another great feature. Simple hotkey combinations for moving images. The more I get to know IrfanView the more I think it is an absolute must-have for Windows!

Microsoft Office Picture Manager for (lossy) cropping! The design of the user's interface for this is perfect. If I could code, I would "copy" this part!

No video player! "they all suck in various ways", as tranglos said...

True Launch Bar (was updated for Win 7 as well), and PS Tray Factory.

KatMouse, I would say, but now I guess I will have to test DeskAngel ;-)

I used to think that I couldn't do without Process Explorer, but I am doing even better with AnVir Task Manager Pro! It is slower to use, but have all the features.

I am afraid that I will have to do without Quizo QTTabbar when I finally upgrade to Win 7. But until such day may come, I think it is a must-have for XP & Vista's Explorer.

I think everything else I have can be replaced by something just as good. But, to broaden what mwang said, too many programs doesn't fully support Unicode. Neither does IrfanView!

General Software Discussion / Re: Good google toolbar (for Firefox) alternative?
« Last post by Curt on December 25, 2009, 04:44 PM »
I was really hoping that someone would answer the initial question, because I am on a similar quest. Though I cannot say that I have nothing against Google's toolbar, because I have, I can say that I want some of its features; especially the word search & highlighting buttons. But not the search box itself. I have never been able to understand why I must replace one proper placed search box with another improper placed search box, merely to make room for two buttons. Give me the two buttons, and keep the rest to your self! (The same goes for the Googlebar Lite.)

So maybe Tuxman will tell how such "trivial tasks" can be done without an extra toolbar, please? Firefox 3.5 on Vista.

---
I guess it should be evident that I don't have a toolbar to recommend. I have tried many, but they all insist that I must have a new search box and therefore yet another bar, to place the search box. It was a little "better" in the old days with IE 5 (6?); back then I could have all I wanted, on two bars.

I just prefer PS Hot Folders  ;)
havent heard of this one - but last updated May 2007 :tellme: (is it perfect!?)

- the May 2007 update was for Vista, I assume; it is working perfect on mine. But of course I went and asked Mr. Poplavski about PS Hot Folders for Windows 7. Here is his answer, four months later, if anyone would care to translate... I have no idea if he even answered my question or if this maybe is a robot generated merry Christmas card or whatever!:

I am very happy with my PS Hot Folders, but in order to recommend it to my friends I need you to tell if you're going to update it for Win 7, or if it possibly already works with Win 7, please.

I can tell you that I also have licenses for FileBox eXtender, Piky Folders (Piky Suite), Handy Folders, Direct Folders, and AnVir Taskmanager Pro, but I prefer PS Hot Folders because it is available via more programs.

Curt
