General Software Discussion / Re: Stay Away From Microsoft VISTA

...the old days of Turbo Pascal...

Boy, that was a good deal.  I couldn't believe that, when MS Pascal cost some hundreds of dollars (I seem to recall $400 at the time), Turbo Pascal could be had for $68.

With looks like that it needs to be unself-conscious!

I see that the iRobot people have a trial balloon for an eavestrough-cleaning robot.

Having spent most of yesterday at the top of a 30-foot ladder I'm all for some other little creep creeper taking over that task.
Sadly, I don't think it's necessarily small size would have enough mass to do a good job but one can hope.

That's most useful. Thanks very much.
Now I can select as many or as few items as I want and print them to whichever printer I choose.

DcUpdater / Re: Installed programs not recognized
« Last post by cranioscopical on September 01, 2007, 11:26 AM »
FYI & FWIW

I was having the same problems with installed programs not showing up.

When I looked, the redirects for CHS and SC were:
%ProgramFiles%\Clipboard Help+Spell\
%ProgramFiles%\ScreenshotCaptor\
Neither has ever resided there.

FARR's path, however, was correctly identified.

Installing the 'available for installation' but already installed CHS and SC didn't help.  They kept reappearing as available for installation.
Dragging the CHS and SC folders onto DCU didn't help, nor did dragging the relevant .dcupdate files to DCU.

Changing the paths in the .dcupdateredirect files in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\DonationCoder\DcUpdater\RedirectFiles
sorted it out nicely.

What fun ;)

I, too, think DCU is an excellent idea.  The occasional quirk is only to be expected.
I thought that even I had made a mistake once upon a time... but then I discovered that was wrong.

All that smurfing 'smurf' smurf really irritated the smurf out of my spellcheck!

C&P!  I was about to recommend the smurfchecker that I use but realized that, while it flags 'frums' and 'srumf', it misses 'surf'.  I guess it's one of these new-wave progams.
Back to the drawing board.

I was having troubles with Windows Vista and it made me so very mad that for the first time in my life I really felt like saying some terrible things. Now App101 has a "welcome back" quote in the DC IRC channel of me saying the smurf word a lot. :-[

Smurf you, Microsmurf. I don't give a smurf about smurfing Vista...

We should all take this to heart. In future, when something goes wrong, it's Smurfy's law!

« Last post by cranioscopical on August 25, 2007, 10:13 PM »
Being his final descendant my mother recently gave me my great grandfathers gold fob watch, which  dates back to the 19th century! Beautiful craftsmanship but it does need cleaning professionally to get it working again. Not sure what I would do with it though - I wouldn't want to sell it but I couldn't really use it.

Seems a shame to hide these things away, doesn't it? If your taste leans towards it, a decent display box/frame lets you display and admire it. My father-in-law has a couple displayed this way and they're quite appealing.

Babies... But only when we're not sleeping: they have a natural reaction to parental sleep which is to either become wide awake and/or be discomforted by something or other ;)

Finally got to use "castor and pollux" - thanks Chris!

Good to know it has its uses but I like Edvard's "Smoke."  After all, there's no smoke without the 'f' word.

Living Room / Re: How do you organise your 'My Documents' folder
« Last post by cranioscopical on August 20, 2007, 10:23 PM »
This stuff's highly dependent on the individual and relies so heavily on what mnemonics work best for that person.
Personally, I use your approach 3 for personal stuff.
Mind you, I have relatively few files in there (about 6,000) so it's no big challenge.
I have a few broad classes of 'principal' folders and then sub-classes of folders below that (created as required when material in a 'principal' folder builds up to create clutter).
Like many others here, I find "Locate" very useful for times when my mental filing cabinet is rusted shut. http://locate32.webhop.org

For each business project, I'll:
  • Create a folder using the project name
  • Establish mirroring and versioning to another internal drive and also automatic back-up to external storage
  • Create whatever files I need and store those within the project folder
  • Remove the folder from my main machine at project end
  • Archive on site and off site

A very useful technique but, unfortunately, a disproportionately-large number of those on whom I employ it seem to be hard of hearing!

Quote
castor & pollux sounds like a nice bit of cockney rhyming slang

From Wordsmyth:"In Greek mythology, the twin brothers of Helen, one mortal and the other immortal."

From BritSlang: "The names of the twins of Gemni are transfered to the twins of the ball bag"

And they do have that star quality...

tomos: Or just "shag it", but I suppose that's not too polite either
It's probably totally polite round these parts. I should use it more. As Darwin says it hasn't the same meaning here.  :)

Darwin: Snog, to my knowledge isn't even in our vocabularly
That reminds me of when I first arrived on these shores.
Smoking was prevalent in those days, and contemporary U.K. slang for a cigarette was a 'fag.'

It was a conversation stopper in various boardrooms when I'd ask, "Can I offer anyone a fag?"

Needless to say, I still have many ways to further my reputation as a Limey nitwit.

Borked?  So much nicer than "hosed" and all the really bad words I've been saying this morning.

I can offer no help with the problems, but the language of frustration is another matter. I can use all possible the help with that!

« Last post by cranioscopical on August 17, 2007, 09:42 AM »

At times I am forced to eschew my favourite Anglo-Saxon oaths.
In what passes round here for polite company I still have a need to express extreme frustration, and there are times when "Oh bother!" just doesn't seem to cut it.

When hard pressed, my expression of choice is "Castor and Pollux."
For example,
Castor and Pollux!  The data say that we have been wrong all along!
So, your mother is coming to stay for a week... Castor and Pollux!"

On what favourite expressions do others rely?

I guess the replies you receive will reflect each individual's need for recording.

I'd say no.  I have tools to do this already.

An optional plug-in is hard to argue with, however, as it avoids 'bloat' for those who don't need recording.

So, you have my input... a definite no yes maybe.
4473
Yay, finally it's approved by SMF!

Congratulations!  Both you and Mouser deserve credit for seeing this through.
Frankly, I don't much care about the SMF community as long as I benefit from your hard work.  :)
It is nice to share, though, and very much in keeping with the philosophy round here.
4474
Folks at SMF carefully reviewed the mod and offered me some constructive ideas yesterday, now the new mod is in better compliance with SMF coding guidelines. Hopefully it will be officially approved by SMF very soon.

A glimmer of intelligence at the end of the tunnel?
