N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: Trout (audio player)
« Last post by Curt on January 19, 2010, 01:50 PM »
Testing, and liking it ♥

One thing, though, is that I really would like Trout to start playing when the first track is added to "enqueue in Trout", (like WMP is doing it), so I don't have to create universal hotkeys, or to open the GUI, to make it start playing.

As now, the following numbers added should still just be added to the end of the playlist, not played at once.

The harddisk issue is just simply that the files were created on another OS and so aren't owned by the Win7 user accounts.

- can this be solved by mass re-writing of the attributes?

- I remember writing him, but I can't find any mail from him in my 'support' folder, so I guess he didn't answer.

I am glad to see you're still maintaining Trout. I remember trying it on my XP but cannot remember what it was like. I am installing it on Vista right now ;-)

unfortunately I have no response to this (I'm paralysed!!)

- always a pleasure to read your posts, Sarah :-)

I can add that it annoys me to no end when a program offers to 'import' my audio files, but without any warning then starts re-writing the tags! (J. River Media Center 14).

Also, I was annoyed, (but hardly to no end), when I politely requested a feature for my R-Drive backup program and was told that  I have had a trial period; end of story!

- no, Dormouse, I was upset; I meant 'any program'. And now I am even more upset.
---

The River has run out  of the building. (??)

I watched a movie when J. River was 'importing'. It didn't manage to find the music folder on the D drive, only the one on the C drive. I assume it would have been possible for me to navigate it to the D drive collection, but I didn't try, because when I finally returned to my computer I realized the bottom line was telling that the program now was re-writing the tags! "Re-writing the tags"?! I swear I never asked it to do anything with the tags  other than to READ them!! Well, of course I closed the program at once, and removed it from my computer. Maybe it would have proven itself after some time, but I will not give it the chance when the very first thing it does with my music is to re-write the tags without asking or even telling me in advance.

I have just installed J. River Media Center 14.0.127 and is sitting  looking at the 'importing' meter: approx 4 files per second, in bundles of 10.000. Well, bundles, I HOPE; the meter simply stopped at 10.000. I sure expect it to start again when the first bundle has been imported.

I am not impressed with the (lack of) speed. This way it will take hours before my 60.000 audio files are imported. They all try to make these specialist programs, but in the end any standard program from Microsoft is faster to use.

Edited: sorry I was confusing the names;
this post is about eboostr, the "ReadyBoost for XP", not the same thing.

I have a license for the "cheap" standard version but decided it was too simple - it didn't help me. I think one will need the more expensive pro version before ReadyBoost eboostr makes sense, if ever. (... deleted)

I don't *know* but it may be the other way around? As an example there is no www.anvir.com site any more, or at least not at the moment. Maybe the company got sold, and someone didn't care to tell?

However, I must point out that the task manager itself is nothing short of excellence. I have a license for the Pro version version and I certainly intend to prolong it when necessary.

The new link is: http://www.easeus.com/giveaways/drw/

Beside, it is not for Win 7
Win 7 users might want to look here for another option.  For the rest of you who are running Windows 2000, XP, or Vista, you can use this as long as you want without limitation.

But in general you may at the moment purchase any EASEUS product with a 20% rebate. Code: CHEN-W79N-PWDS

The user makes the choice at installation whether to install the program as a service or as a stand-alone manually-activated-only program.
-Curt

That's good to know for lucky people (like me) who meet this issue only once in a while. I didn't see it for months now, so there's no need to install a service.

The initial mentioning of this program said, "before Vista". However, I ran it once on my Vista, and it cured the problem I had with a menu hiding behind the task bar.

- the way you describe your experience, I must say that I don't think the improvement necessarily was due to JetAudio's converter as much as to ABR versus VBR. 192 kbps ABR is mostly something like 110~180 kbps, while 192 kbps VBR always is 192 kbps. Edited: wrong! the "V" in VBR is for "variable". "CBR" is constant.

But I do think JetAudio Plus is really fine.

The announcement of the first MP3HD player is more about touch-screen etcetetera than about MP3HD. I guess they realize that nobody   except a few DC-members   will know what MP3HD is.

Dear all4mp3.com subscribers,

first things first: we wish you all a happy 2010, full of love and mp3.

For us, the year starts with this great news: Samsung just announced the first ever mp3HD player during last week's CES show in Las Vegas .

We were lucky to have a hands-on demo of the IceTouch (YP-H1) during the show, and this innovation-rich player is very promising:

Beside mp3HD playback, the Icetouch features the world’s first 2-inch, full color, transparent Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) touch-screen display. It functions as a DVD-quality video player, studio quality audio player, an ultra-portable photo album, an FM radio and even a portable storage device (up to 16GB onboard memory)

According to Samsung, it will be available for purchase in the first half of ....

General Software Discussion / Re: MIDI to MP3
« Last post by Curt on January 11, 2010, 10:54 AM »
I have come across so few MIDI files that it never occurred to me to test various sound-fonts - even though I did try to install Vista Midi Picker (it failed) - so I have no favourite, yet. Besides, I never understood why I would have to PAY for this. Mind you, I don't create music, I just replay it.

Is something that has to stay running in the background at all times?

..., but then again if it has to stay running in the background at all times, it wouldn't be too useful on that really low spec machine.

the app stays running and registers as a service but the working set memory is very low, around 1200k with virtually no file reads or writes. I wouldn't think you would experience any performance degradation, but if you do the app is very easy to uninstall.
