Ah, Selkie-san... much closer than Vancouver as the crow flies, though you do have to journey across the water to get to where I am (but then, getting down the Sunshine Coast to Vancouver requires a water crossing or two anyway, doesn't it?).

Well, SWREG is now in on the act - my request through them for a refund has not been responded to yet (60 hours ago and counting). I expect that they'll tell me to take it up with my credit card provider who I expect will tell me that there is nothing they can do given that I've already paid off the balance for August... Doesn't really matter, I'm just hoping that GemX is prompted to make some sort of a statement on the homepage indicating what's going on. Right, I'm off to start posting complaints on shareware sites...

Heh, heh - xbeta, I'd forgotten to mention that THE most used software on my computer is Chinese - Maxthon  :-* I wish I could remember where I read about WPS, but if memory serves, reviewers felt that even without English language support it was the best alternative to Office (for anyone - English speakers included), which is why I was so keen to try it. As I stated earlier, at the time I  couldn't find a download link that worked, so never tried it. I'll be watching for the availability of an English language.

Quite the cast of characters at Tugboat Enterprises - in some cases a trip down BC's political memory lane and in others a diverse assortment of tech gurus and US businesspeople backing and advising it.

Removed the link to Dirhael's other post (and thread) on this...

Just as well because at least one of my postings should have said:

Plus fresh installs just run a whole lot smoother.

That's what I'm hoping for! Next Wednesday afternoon seems about right... My wife is off to Korea for 16 days, leaving me to bond with my offspring <gulp!> - I'll sit and mindlessly shuffle discs in and out of my computer and watch the little cherubs run amok.

One of my roomates in university was a huge (in every sense of the word - Mennonite I recall him getting ready to go out for dinner with his dad and telling me that they didn't care about food quality, just "volume, volume, volume". I am sure he was kidding because he was an excellent cook... but I digress) Iron Maiden fan and I went through a phase where I listened to their music a lot. Still like them now, 20 years later.

Very true! Just checked this out and you're right (I always use Details view) - it works in thumbnails view... Nice!

Funny, Curt. That one doesn't work for me. I use the F12 key to toggle between the info panel and a full screen length file list. I almost always have Preview tab on the Info panel selected, wonder if this has anything to do with it? Anyway, can't reproduce that one, but it sounds sweet!

Thanks for the thread, nite-monkey. I've just been rationalizing taking the plunge and doing a clean install myself. If nothing else it will clear up some minor (but big to me!) problems that I've been having. We've been kind of spoiled with XP in that I've not done a complete format and fresh install of XP in literally years whereas I used to have to do one regularly (every 6 months or so in 9x). Might as well bite the bullet and do it and this thread has given me some ideas  :)

Hi Selkie,

Welcome to Donationcoder! Thanks for stopping by and posting about your product - it does sound quite a bit different from the other products discussed in this thread so far... Worth a look!

No problem, Curt! I love XYplorer - but admittedly, it has taken me quite a while to appreciate how powerful it is... Don Lessau, the developer, is really thinking outside of the box a lot with it, which I see as a strength. Look at the fact that his implementation of tabs, as opposed to a dual pane setup, once you get onto it is really as easy to use as a dual pane manager - easier in some respects. You can have two (or more) tabs open and drag a file or folder from one tab onto another and the file will be moved there, or you can select a file and bring up the context menu and select "move/copy/send to" - and then select the open tab or a folder from a list to send it to. Nice. Simple.

Yes - re: XYPlorer, there is literally a new build everyday. It's really quite incredible. I've yet to have a problem with one of the beta builds  If it is going to be $49.95 for a lifetime licence (like mwb100 I'm not sure) it's still a bargain.

Hi beldeamon - hadn't thought of phoning the company. I think I'll give it a try after the weekend (have a meeting to attend out of town - leave this afternoon). I seriously doubt that I'll get an answer but you never know...

Yeah... I could have claimed "Ne How" as meaning that I have some level of Chinese proficiency. However, this would have been a phenomenal "whopper" in my case!

xbeta, please don't take my comments as meaning that I think that Chinese language only applications are not worth looking at/I won't look because it's not in English. I am no linguistic chauvinist, I just have never had any reason to try WPS given the English language alternatives. I've actually downloaded the installation file you pointed us to (a year ago I could not figure out how to download the installer) and may give it a go when I have some time.

Well... I'm still using Dopus 9 and love it. I need to get that out of the way/out in the open up front. TC is amazing because there is little that it can't do, it's pretty convenient/intuitive to use and the price is amazing ($34 for a licence that is good for upgrades until further notice. That might sound scary, but no charge has been made for an upgrade in years). Anyway, I run WinXP Pro in Classic mode and don't mind the look of TC in the slightest. It runs off a USB stick, too - without the necessity of buying an additional licence - and you can take all of the plugins with you as well. Look at XYplorer as well... You'll probably like the GUI better than TC and it, too, comes with USB compatibility for "free" and features a lifetime licence. It doesn't feature dual pane viewing but it's use of tabs and the context menu makes moving/copying files around between folders as convenient as a dual pane manager anyway. It's an excellent alternative to both DOpus and TC. As noted elsewhere, though, the price is going up on Oct. 1 so check it out now - it's currently $29.95 going up to $49.95 and I am not sure that the new price will include lifetime licencing...

Wow! I'm impressed - I just received a receipt, mini-manual, and a CD ROM containing the latest release and my registration file for Total Commander! My $34 investment is looking better and better all the time. The file manager is awesome and this kind of attention to detail is phenomenal  Christian Ghisler is a class act.

I wrote a lengthy reply earlier this morning and didn't post it... Suffice it to say that xbeta you obviously read and write English at a high level while my Chinese reading and writing (not to mention speaking) ability is absolutely nil. Thus, there is little attraction in using software that I can't read any of the documentation, options, or shortcuts for when the FOSS Office suite market is pretty competitive with a number of English language options.
