General Software Discussion / Re: wanted: nice and small screensaver
« Last post by jgpaiva on February 13, 2006, 03:54 AM »
It allows me to auto-dim the screen to 25%, so I can still see what's going on in Miranda/irc
Yep, i love it because of that! And it's one of the only programs that i know of, that have a useful bug: The notification windows from msn messenger don't get dimmed, so, i leave the screen dim to 10%,but when someone speaks to me in msn, i can still see who's speaking :D
Thanks again for that great link!

Btw, why aren't you in the IRC channel? :)
I am... :)

UrlSnooper / For Opera users
« Last post by jgpaiva on February 12, 2006, 05:56 AM »
I just found this link, which adds more download links to the links pannel for opera users.
From the site,
this script adds invisible anchors for every image, embed, object, applet and iframe to the page. It works automaticly after the page loads.
It seems to be quite similar to urlsnooper's functionality, so, i thought i should post it here.
(i haven't tried it yet)

What is the currently best Desktop Search software?
Since you've got the word search in your question, i'd say it was google  :tellme:
I've only used google desktop search, and it's very good, is there anyone who uses another software like this?

Living Room / Re: Just installed new hardware... ahhh
« Last post by jgpaiva on February 11, 2006, 06:36 PM »
maybe it has something to do with the refresh rate, but i did have the CRT set to 85 which ought to be plenty
The explanation for that is scientific, and quite easy. The difference is that a CRT displays images by bombarding electrons against the screen, and some of those electrons go to your eyes, which originates the bleeding eyes and such.
With an lcd, the only thing that you have is light, and not even direct light, since the light bulbs are at the bottom or at the top of the lcd (or both, if you have a very good lcd :) ). But still, it might make your eyes hurt, it just will take longer ;)

nudone: you're not a opera user, are you?
Opera has serveral keyboard shotcuts, do use when navigating through pages.
In a forum, for example, you can even do "ctrl" + "right arrow" and it goes to the next thread :D

I can tell you mouser, that also happens with LCD's. I have a 15'' wxga screen (i know, it's got space for nothing, but i bet you can't put your computer on a backsack and take it when you go on vacations  :tellme: :tellme:), and after some time (a few hours ;) ) in front of the computer, my eyes and my head hurt.
And some time ago, i when to the ophtalmologist and i found out that i'll have to use glasses.. I hate the idea :'(

But, if simplicity and minimalism is what you're after, might I suggest PowerDimmer from WhitSoft development.
Thank you! :D

Congratulations for your moving, f0dder!

after all, what's more important, food or internet?
That's a rhetorical question, right? Everybody knows that internet is more important!
Come on, if you grow your own food, you don't pay for it, but internet, you've got to pay the isp's for it. So, as they say money is the most important thing in the world, internet is indubitably more important than food  :tellme: :tellme:

Not kidding, now, hope to see you soon, f0dder!
Good luck with the move :)

i could probably add this to process tamer without much trouble.

mouser: i think that the wiki is a good idea, but then, there would be no way to give distinction to the best apps, would it?
4418
In your last post, LuckMan212, i think i'm with you.
This new section could come as some sort of a "review", for those categories where there is too much material to do a review.

But i think it should have a different arrangement:
There would be a forum section for this, yes, but each of the categories, would have it's own section, with a few stickies with the "certified apps", that in the beggining would start by having no threads. Then, for each new app in that category, there would be one thread started, and after that thread had enough posts considering that app to be a good app, it would be made sticky. This would allow to have one moderator for each of the categories, would allow for a better organization, and like this, the moderator wouldn't have too much work copying the reviews, he would only have to make the thread sticky, if it deserves to be.
(i am sorry if this was your idea and i misunderstood you, i didn't understand some things in your post)

I think that there could be some honour given to the apps, maybe not the "DonationCoder Seal of Excellence", because that is reserved for apps that have been reviewed, but some kind of important distinction.

These super high level languages like FSBL, AHK, etc are just too far removed from the type of information needed to efficiently create such a tool.
Don't defy FBSL... I think that gerome will prove you wrong ;)

Mouser: i love that idea!
I think that it should be exactlly like you mentioned, every time someone ads some new software to the thread, that person should include a brief description, screenshots and links. Great idea!

LuckMan212: I think your idea is well-based, but doesn't have the best results. When you made that list, (which is a great list, btw) i'm sure you had the problem i'm about to mention too:
There is way too much opinions and possibilities to open a poll in some of those areas!
I did a similar thread here on dc, entitled "best video player there is". Just watch what happened:  https://www.donation...43.msg14469#msg14469 :(

I'd like to do it, but i think i could only use the data in Process manager, because ahk doesn't have any functions to access those kind of features. The implications would be the same that Skrommel's process guard has, you wouldn't have access to process manager from ctrl-alt-del, and you'd allways have another icon in the tray bar. For me, those are major disadvantages, i think it should be used another approach.
(maybe Fsbl? ;) )

I end up relying on my text's matching bracket highlighter.  If it matches with the wrong bracket or none at all, I missed something ;)
Exactly my point!

I know edvard, and believe me, i've tried them, but i found none that had the hotkey to move the active window to the next vd, a feature that i need very much.

Edvard, thanks for the links.
I was a bb4win user, and like the linux version, bb4win had multiple virtual desktops, and they worked awsomelly.
Since i left bb4win, i never more found another virtual desktops program that worked so well.
I tried every app on the wikipedia site, and found that none did what i was looking for. Some used too much ram, others had a hole lot of features that i simply didn't need, others didn't have configurable hotkeys, other didn't have hotkeys at all, it just drove me mad.
But now, mouser posted a great link! Virtuawin has a function that is not easy to find in this kind of programs: it has an hotkey to change a window from one desktop to the next. This is one of the features i need the most, since i use the keyboard a lot, and don't like very much using the mouse to send one window to another desktop.
For me, it has only one problem: you can't assign any key to do that function. But that's a problem that ahk solves very well ;)
