However, recently I've been thinking a lot about DC needing to be reinvigorated and revitalized, and I've been considering all sorts of possibilities, including having areas focused on Linux, Mobile, Web (Android, iOs), Mac, etc.  That's surely for another discussion thread and not this one, but thought it was worth a mention.

Breaking things out by major OS (Windows/OSX and iOS/*NIX) plus a catchall for 'other mobile' (Andriod/WebOS/etc) would make good sense.

And yes, it's definitely something deserving a separate discussion. :)

what's that about? - you mean they offer you stuff and then blackmail (whatever) - or is it for people downloading (without paying) stuff that should be paid for?

I was referring to them going after downloaders who frequent file "sharing" sites.

In this case: [high numbers of searches for adult material on Google] + [high P2P activity on IP address] = [presumption of illegally downloading copyrighted adult materials]

Since most porn addicts tend to have low self-esteem (and would prefer not to have their hobby made public) a simple letter from an attorney threatening legal action and offering cash settlement terms can be quite effective. Especially since many people are also incredibly afraid of lawyers.

Sounds like either a video driver issue or a program bug stomping on explorer.exe. You'll also sometimes also get that when explorer goes out looking for nonexistent network drives. If killing and then reinvoking explorer.exe process using TaskManager clears the WSOD it's definitely an explorer issue.

+1! Waking almost always works the charm for me.

That and/or 20 minutes listening to Bach, Teleman, or Gregorian Chant.

I don't think anyone can really speak for the forum as a whole. There are as many differing opinions on just about everything as there are members here. Speaking for myself, I own and use an iPhone. And I don't think very highly of it.

But my criticisms and attitude toward it isn't much different than it is for any other smartphone since the telcos do their best to lockdown everything running on their networks. And they've been doing that since the days of the old Bell Telephone System who arranged to make it a federal offense to plug anything into the US telephone system that wasn't manufactured by Bell Labs - their captive manufacturing company.

If the forum has an overall attitude, it's that of basic geeks who don't suffer fools too gladly when they happen to be corporations that should know better than to carry on the way they do.

If Apple occasionally seems to get more than its share of criticism and put downs, that's only because Apple's condescending attitude towards the rest of the world in general invites an equally snarky response when they drop the ball or play games with their customers.

And that's not confined to just Apple. Microsoft has gotten its share of heat for where they're going with Windows 8. Linux gets its share of shots for the uneven level of quality among the various distros and GNU projects, and the GPL. So I hardly think there's a general feeling of knee-jerk unfriendliness towards iOS. It gets criticized for what it is as well as for what it is not. But I think most of the criticisms are valid and based on due consideration of the technical issues surrounding iOS as well as the corporate policies Apple is bent on pursuing.

At least that's what I think. (And you'll easily get dozens of people here who will disagree with me and/or characterize it differently.) That's a good part of what makes DoCo what it is.

Living Room / Opinions sought on the HTC One X (or other non-iOS smartphone)
« Last post by 40hz on December 12, 2012, 08:30 PM »
I'm at the point where I need to capitulate and get a new smartphone.

I've looked a quite a few. So far I like what I'm hearing about the HTC One X.

Anybody here use one?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Any other phone recommendation would also be appreciated - but I'd prefer to get off Apple and iOS if at all possible - even though it means walking away from a mildly substantial investment in iPhone apps.

Such is life. ;D

This just in: As of today Google no longer allows you to turn safe search off.

Screenshot from 2012-12-12 17:36:07.png

Checking settings confirms turning it off is no longer available as an option:

Screenshot from 2012-12-12 17:48:46.png

Here's Google's official statement about the change (emphasis added):

We are not censoring any adult content, and want to show users exactly what they are looking for — but we aim not to show sexually-explicit results unless a user is specifically searching for them. We use algorithms to select the most relevant results for a given query. If you’re looking for adult content, you can find it without having to change the default setting — you just may need to be more explicit in your query if your search terms are potentially ambiguous. The image search settings now work the same way as in web search.

I'm guessing this was done as a concession to the porn industry. People using Google for porn searches now have to go on record as specifically requesting "stuff" as opposed to being more general in their request and letting Google's fuzzy algorithms do the dirty work. Literally.

Possibly it will now be far easier for individuals to receive one of those blackmail "offer of legal settlement" letters from the porn industry's attorneys if their collection of images "for the discriminating and advanced connoisseur" gets a little too...um...swollen?

Oh well...

Some folks probably shouldn't be web cruising for that sort of thing quite so much anyway. ;D 8)

More about this change here.

They've already stated that they're making hardware.  Just saw an article on that a couple of days ago.

http://www.gizmag.co...box-confirmed/25378/

I'd really love it if they could team up with Roku. My GF bought one of their boxes last year and we've had phenomenal luck with it. If you could take what they've done and beef up the hardware for serious gaming I think it would be a real home entertainment box winner. Roku has the web infrastructure in place already. Steam would just have to add storage (and their DRM crap) and it should be set to go.

The most life threatening aspect of Apple maps, or GoogleMaps - or even paper maps - are the people who consult them while driving.

I'd bet drivers looking at smartphones resulted in more deaths than getting lost in a desert because of a faulty map ever did. Or will.

Be interesting (if true) to see how they can take something as intrinsically proprietary as a game console and run it on something as committed to openess as Linux and not violate the GPL.

Especially when you consider how often the GPL has been cited by game developers as the primary reason why they don't produce native Linux versions of their games.

Living Room / Re: A different perspective on the failure of a Kickstarter
« Last post by 40hz on December 11, 2012, 06:33 PM »
Platform? Let's get real.

Kickstarter is basically an unregulated forum for solicitation of investors.

You can call it whatever you like. And I'm all for what it attempts to accomplish. But it's still a mechanism for people to solicit money from the general public. And it's ripe for abuse because of it's current lack of regulation and status. So it's only a matter of time before the con artists start taking advantage of that.

We've already seen some amateur attempts at gaming the Kickstarter system already.

Anyone know any good secure, quick anonymizer-type services that act by proxy?

Have TAILS will travel. More about it here. 8)

I'd stick to TOR for the time being. The problem with any anonymizing proxy service is how much you can trust that service. I occasionally suspect more than a few of them of being fronts. And if they're not, they might be eventually.

What DMCA really means is "Destroy My Company, A$$h0le$"....
I'm no fan of DMCA or site takedowns in general - but let's be honest here, how much legitimate content does any of the usenet indexers or torrent sites have?

I think the point here is that it's more an issue of free speech and information sharing.

Time was when you actually had to be a perpetrator of a criminal act to be held culpable for something. That got expanded to people advocating criminal behaviors under the argument you were "aiding and abetting." Then the notion of "conspiring" entered the picture during the "war on communism" era. First, conspiracy required direct conversations. Later it was applied to people merely advocating for something, at which point you could be charged with conspiring even though you had never once met or talked to the person you supposedly were conspiring with. The US anti-war movement had "conspiracy" thrown at them constantly in the 60s and 70s. As did the civil rights movement a decade before.

With the indexers, what you're seeing is an attempt to destroy the ability of the general public to find things somebody with power finds objectionable. It doesn't go after actual perpetrators. It just attempts to block public discovery and awareness of it. (You can rest assured the government, however, maintains its own indexers for its own agendas.) It's a form of censorship. And a dangerous one. Because you can look at the news almost every day and see case after case of people being harassed or prosecuted, not for what they did, but for what they said - or even more alarming - for the questions they asked.

And that's a very bad thing.

Western democracy, in the classic sense, is founded on the key principles of free inquiry and open dialog. As one college professor I had once put it: At its core, Western Civilization is nothing more than an ongoing conversation.

And that conversation has made what progress we've achieved possible. And it's also arguably created one of the most progressive and open societies in human history despite all its flaws and missteps made along the way.

The problem with hitting a "soft target" like indexers is it doesn't go to the root of the problem. It simply attempts to hide it and stop people talking about it. And I think the desire to to hide it is motivated by the fact that people who grew up on a western style democracy have a bad habit of questioning officially sanctioned groupthink. Most people, who see a big rise in some illegal behavior, first side with "law & order." But after a while, they start questioning what is going on that so many people are suddenly breaking some law. And once they look more closely into it, their opinions on the matter often change.

Such changes in public opinion often trigger legal reforms. Or force changes government behavior.

Changes some elements in our governments and corporations (is there really any difference anymore?) wish to avoid at all costs.

Forget keyboards. I often wonder why it doesn't occur to some people it's possible to wash their hands in water. Y'know, like maybe once or twice a year - whether they need it or not?

I was at a client site last week that had a collection of the grungiest, dirtiest (and any other "est" you can think of) keyboards imaginable. And this was a...well let's just say they were in as "white collar" a profession as they come.

I was tempted to put biohazard warning stickers on these things - assuming I could get them to stick.

^Mandrake was (and it's successor is) a very fine distro. One of the best IMHO. Now that they seem to have gotten their management issues and differences under control it's yet another good option for a Linux desktop installation. I used to call it "RedHat done right."  It's still in the top 30 on Distrowatch's website. And with good reason.  :)

^ If you do a search in the Ubuntu website you get two links:

http://www.ubuntu.co...tu/ubuntu-and-debian

and multiple hits of this which is found in the installation manual:

https://help.ubuntu..../what-is-debian.html

I didn't see any way you can get to either of these pages from the homepage. AFAICT you'd need to do a search to find them. :-\
