yeah, I meant the site. For some weird reason my Firefox won't respond to my applications' "look for update"-link-buttons and such. I have no idea what have caused this error. I cannot even register a new program if it is done from inside the program and then via Firefox.

Developer's Corner / Re: .NET Framework 3.0 Officially Released
« Last post by Curt on February 11, 2010, 12:12 PM »
.NET Framework 4 RC

Beta test the new Microsoft .Net Framework:
http://majorgeeks.co...work_4_RC_d5973.html

The Microsoft .NET Framework 4 provides the following new features and improvements:

- The .NET Framework 4 works side by side with the Framework version 3.5 SP1. Applications that are based on earlier versions of the Framework will continue to run on that version. Just a subset of functionality is shared by all versions of the Framework.
Innovations in the Visual Basic and C# languages, for example statement lambdas, implicit line continuations, dynamic dispatch, and named/optional parameters.

- The ADO.NET Entity Framework, which simplifies how developers program against relational databases by raising the level of abstraction, has many new features. These includes persistence ignorance and POCO support, lazy loading, test-driven development support, functions in model, and new LINQ operators.

- Enhancements to ASP.NET:
New JavaScript UI Templates and databinding capabilities for AJAX.
New ASP.NET chart control.

- Improvements in WPF:
Added support in Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) for Windows 7 multi-touch, ribbon controls, and taskbar extensibility features.
Added support in WPF for Surface 2.0 SDK.

New line-of-business controls including charting control, smart edit, data grid, and others that improve the experience for developers who build data centric applications.
Improvements in performance and scalability.
Visual improvements in text clarity, layout pixel snapping, localization, and interoperability.

- Improvements to Windows Workflow (WF) that let developers to better host and interact with workflows. These include an improved activity programming model, an improved designer experience, a new flowchart modeling style, an expanded activity palette, workflow-rules integration, and new message correlation features. The .NET Framework also offers significant performance gains for WF-based workflows.

- Improvements to Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) such as support for WCF Workflow Services enabling workflow programs with messaging activities, correlation support, durable two-way communication and rich hosting capabilities.

- Additionally, .NET Framework 4 provides new WCF features such as service discovery, router service, simplified configuration and a number of improvements to queuing, REST support, diagnostics, and performance.

- Innovative new parallel programming features such as parallel loop support, Task Parallel Library (TPL), Parallel LINQ (PLINQ), and coordination data structures which let developers harness the power of multi-core processors.

Additional Requirements for Server Installation:
If you have to perform a server installation, your computer must have the following software in addition to the basic requirements:
Internet Information Services (IIS) version 6.0 or later. To access the features of ASP.NET, IIS with the latest security updates must be installed before the .NET Framework is installed. ASP.NET is supported only on Windows XP Professional, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 R2 RC.
(Recommended) Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 or later
Note: Most users do not have to perform a server installation. If you are unsure whether to perform a server installation, just perform a basic installation.

General Software Discussion / Re: Batch photo filter software?
« Last post by Curt on February 09, 2010, 09:58 AM »
Hi folks, having just spent the last 2-3 days scanning 1800 slides I am in need of some software, (preferably free), to automate the next process.

All(?!) that is required is the ability to batch run a Photoshop compatible filter, (Polaroid's Dust & Scratch), over all the images and save to JPG output from TIFF input.

- so, what did you do, 4wd, to perform your task?  :tellme:

Another small speciality for W7 is thoroughly explained (better than by the program's author!) by 'Martin' at http://www.ghacks.ne...dows-7-library-tool/

I have never had any problems with the beta versions from True Launch bar.

True Launch Bar v4.4.4 beta released.
I have never had any problems with the beta versions from True Launch bar.

The current beta version 4.4.4 must be much faster especially if you are using the skins. We optimized the virtual folders processing, so TLB will load virtual folder faster then previous versions. Also we've redesigned the way True launch Bar working with the icons. Now True Launch Bar uses much less the GDI resources. This is especially important for Windows 7 users.

What's new:
* Added the options for minimum menu width and height
* 13 buttons can be added on the menu caption to perform some
operation with menu or to open the context menus
* Improved skins format
* Improved performance with the skin
* Some minor improvements

Fixed:
* Arrows now changes on the pressing the toolbar button
* Cut the text of the buttons on some conditions
* Crash on clicking the scroll bar when tooltips are disabled
* The last columns of the lists are zero sized by default
* The layout lost on renaming the subfolders inside the virtual
folders
* The bottom position of the scroll bar
* The "default columns" option is ignored

The search box
We've added the search box support. This looks and works like the search box in the Windows Vista/7. Press CTRL+F, type the part of the name you want to find and True Launch Bar will find the shortcuts

It may sound strange, but for this you can also use AnVir Task Manager Pro!!! I cannot remember if the free version has it as well. Edited: do they even have a free version?

As long as you still are using Vista, you may want to experiment with Quizo QTTabbar

http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/
http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/download

I use the Beta5 version, it is without any bugs. But Quizo was ill for a long time,  alas  it is not likely that the program will be updated for W7.

January 31st, 2010 . Filed under: Downloads. Tags: Services, TWC App

We are pleased to release SMART (Service Management And RealEasy Tweaking) Utility v 1.0 for Windows 7. SMART is a freeware utility which helps you tweak Windows 7 Services, based on the suggested configurations of BlackVipers.

smart-utility.png

It can simply be downloaded and used as a portable application to customize your  Windows 7 services settings, to meet your requirements. With judicious tweaking, it can make your system faster, as you will be disabling services which you do not require.

Tweaking a system has to be done carefully, and more so in the cases of Services. A  Windows service is a long running executable that performs specific functions and which is designed not to require user intervention. Windows services can be configured to start when the operating system is booted and run in the background as long as Windows is running, or they can be started manually when required.

You can always tweak your services manually individually, but what this utility does is automate the entire process to give you the desired settings. Based on the recommendations of the BlackVipers Windows 7 Service Configuration Guide, the utility offers 3 sets of pre- configured tweaks :

1. Safe
2. Tweaked
3. Advanced or BareBones

The utility has set the Presets to check for Service before applying Tweak. There is also a button to re-set services to Windows 7 Default Settings.

http://www.thewindow...-7-services-released

1. Click a Service to get additional information about it.
2. Double-Click a Service to Automatically Start or Stop it.
3. Right-Click a Service to View and set StartUp Options (Automatic, Manual & Disabled).
4. Select a Service and Click Open File Location to Locate Service Executable (Does not work on svchost, so if you happen to click a svchost and it opens up your Documents Folder, don’t be alarmed.).
5. Click Refresh To reload the list of Services.
6. Click a preset (Default, Safe, Tweaked, Advanced/BareBones), to set preconfigured Tweaks.
7. The Safe setting is (you guessed it!) safe! Tweak and Advanced settings, are for Advanced users to set their Services.

..., you can change things, but it's a bit like using peelable Letraset, or a kindergarten cut-and-stick job.  It isn't remotely like using a word processor.

so you feel sure it will treat the pdf as if it is an image and not a text file?

Found Deals and Discounts / $60 Online Armor++ for free!
« Last post by Curt on January 28, 2010, 11:32 AM »
http://techpp.com/20...friday-january-29th/ :

What’s with January 29th 2010? First it was WinPatrol Plus who announced an exciting deal where you could get the lifetime license for less than a dollar, and now, it is Tall Emu’s Online Armor ++, which is being offered for FREE via giveawayoftheday  on 29th Jan itself!

I wouldn’t dare to compare Online Armor with WinPatrol, but whenever I have used Online Armor Free it left me quite impressed with its leak-test and HIPS performance. Online Armor++ comes with all of the power of Online Armor, but additionally includes the award-winning dual Emsisoft/Ikarus Dual Antivirus and Antimalware engine!

Online Armor protects your passwords and private information from being stolen by blocking the keylogger as it tries to activate. Online Armor’s behavior detection ensures that even specially created or new keyloggers are detected and prevented.

If not for other things, I would recommend Online Armor for its Firewall capabilities.

You would never see me writing about giveaways on www.giveawayoftheday.com, but this time it is a fantastic offer that gives you a chance to own a premium security suite for free (normally costs $60), so don’t miss your chance on Friday, January 29th. Check out this page to know about Online Armor ++ features in greater detail.
-techPP

The free Online Armor has been recommended here at DC several times. In my opinion the ++ is better than techPP seems to be aware of or will dare to say, and being free tomorrow it is icing on the cake. Highly recommended!
