General Software Discussion / Re: GemX - missing in action
« Last post by Darwin on October 05, 2007, 04:37 PM »
Heh, heh - thanks for the comments, guys! I was posting a bit tongue in cheek (though looking back at it it isn't really evident) when I complained about the exchange rate - Doublewitt, you're right getting 95% or so back is nothing to complain about. Carol - if you're right (and I will follow up on this) - then I REALLY have nothing to complain about.

Josh - no worries, things have sorted themselves out from my end. If you're interested in a refund yourself, this route should work for you as well, though there is a process that needs to be worked through (you contact GemX through the SWREG interface, wait for a few days, then write to SWREG via their interface, they write to GemX and give them 48 hours to reply. When they don't, you use the interface again to contact SWREG who then give GemX another 48 hours to respond before issuing a refund).

Hmmm... I'm starting to question the wisdom of having requested a refund: I paid $70US in August when the Canadian dollar sat around $.96US. If I get my refund over the weekend I'll be paid back with the US dollar worth $.98CDN! I''m going to be losing money on this deal... Not to mention that the credit card company charged me a fee to do the conversion from Canadian to US currency and will do the same again  :o

Are beards obligatory - I feel left out.

Maybe you could include one in the member pack in future.

Not to worry, Carol. Neither tomos nor I have beards (at least, neither of us did in July 2007!)!

PS No one ever made an effort to guess who is who in that picture...

I never did try the phone number/fax route. Once SWREG started working with me on this I couldn't see the point. Like Josh, I'm still going to monitor the forum and if it is ever revived I'll be making my displeasure known there...

For some perverse reason, I was a de facto beta tester as well (granted, it appears EVERYONE was). I say this because the download that I received after purchasing the upgrade was for 3.09. It was this anomaly that set me off down this path in the first place. My first DSM to them sought clarification about the version that I was running... I never did receive a response on that one, either...

cpilot  - It's not obvious from my posts above, but I agree with you completely. Future-proof (or cost effective) or not, this IS cool

I should have read the entire thread before making my first post here - Ralf's points about (in this post) are both spot on (in my opinion) and very funny  ;D

Gluteus, er, Ralf Maximus, this:

Although, it *would* be cool to use this technology to have software tatooed on my butt.

Makes for quite a mental picture!

Yes - this is a point I have made repeatedly via each of the avenues for communication available to us: at least post something on the homepage letting existing and prospective customers know how things sit. I *REALLY* didn't want it to come to this. As you say, though, time to move on.

Sadly, cultures that have adopted a farming or animal rearing (or combination thereof) way of life tend to view the land that sustains them as belonging to them (as a group or to individuals within the group) and thus have a clear concept of "ownership" of the land. Rather than being in tune with, or part of, nature, they tend to see themselves as masters of nature (both subsistence patterns require extensive modification of the landscape). Unfortunately, it's a short intellectual leap from "mastering" nature to "mastering" other people...

Well... an update of sorts: SWREG e-mailed GemX about three hours ago giving them 48 hours to contact me and advising them that failure to do so will result in SWREG issuing me a refund. I feel quite conflicted about this because I really was/am hoping that gemx hasn't gone away... Sadly, it seems to me that they have. To date, I have 7 unanswered DSM's with them, 3 unanswered e-mails, the blog comments, this thread, 5 messages through SWREG... Not looking too promising, folks  :(

App - your quick launch bars have always scared me - and continue to do so! Like Carol, I can't imagine remembering what all the icons are pointing to. To each his or her own though... Thanks for show us your desktop and thanks for the screencaps of your set up in the past - sort of cool seeing how it's evolved over time.

My XP notebook is running the Classic theme (with themes service disabled) so features a blue background and exactly one icon in the lower right of the screen: the recycle bin. Pretty boring. Sometimes I wonder why I bother doing this - what else is the desktop for but to provide quick links to oft used programs? I think I'm compensating electronically for the chaos in my (physical) office!

What I love about Dash is how resource light it is. Having said that, DirectAccess and FARR are much better at playing nice with other keyboard-centric programmes (Dash mangles a few features of SpellCatcher Plus. Fortunately, these are features that I don't use so I've simply disabled them). I actually have found that I am so conflicted now WRT which of the three* I like best that I'm not using anything at the moment!

Holy Carp, Armando! I've always steered clear of the GTD Add-On for Outlook because I thought the $70 price tag was excessive. But compared to the GANTT add-in, GTD is almost a bargain!
4391
The biggest caveat WRT Outlook is the fact that profiles are FLAKY. I've just had a bit of a merry go round with Outlook 2003 because it randomly removed all of my Rules and started placing multiple links to my main pst in the folder view on the left hand pane. Trying to fix these problems created more and more and more problems. Best plan: create a new profile, set Outlook to prompt you for the profile to open on startup and then open Outlook with the new profile. Import the old pst and reconfigure your e-mail accounts etc. This is actually A LOT quicker than fussing about with the registry, etc. That is, I could have spent 20 minutes following the route I've just outlined but instead spent over a week googling for fixes and trying them out before doing this.

Sorry, a bit tangential, but it needed to be said. I think Outlook is brilliant - like Armando, I've gone through similar quests for alternatives and always come back to Outlook. The above points are just "glitches" that have to be kept in mind...

Just to update everyone, SWREG, who handle gemx's online retail transactions have not had any response to their request to them for clarification on what's going on, either... They e-mail on my behalf on Saturday asking for a response within 48 hours and there's been nothing but silence since...

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried the latest beta of X1 v.6? I haven't as I am very happy with Archivarius 3000, but my wife loved X1 until it started messing up Outlook and I've tried her on both WDS (I hated it - she didn't mind) and Copernic (I like it a lot, she keeps complaining about it not indexing some of her files/e-mail). Just wondering if it is an advance over version 5.6x... the users forum isn't very informatiive on this.

« Last post by Darwin on October 01, 2007, 06:24 PM »
Assuming you're using Dopus 9, right click on the column headings in the lister, select More from the context menu that appears, under Columns in the dialogue should popup, select Music from the pull-down men and then select Bit Rate and click on the right arrow to add it to the columns that are viewed. Click OK out of there and you *should* have achieved what you are after...

Good grief Joe35, 3700 Mondays doesn't look like a lot when stated that way, but when you divide it by 52 it's a more impressive number than I was anticipating!
