Living Room / Re: "HDD Not Included"
« Last post by cranioscopical on October 23, 2007, 05:22 PM »
A little thing like this on your desktop is sure to get knocked around. Maybe someone would even trip on the cord. Too great a chance for damage to consider any of the other benefits such a device might bring, in my opinion.

Well, it's weighted (which means the shipping cost just about doubles the price).
For those of us without rampant kids or pets (and with some compressed air handy) it could be a great way to swap in and out a bunch of different HDs.
The risk to me would be grabbing the HD before letting it cool (recalling a recent experience when I took something from the oven, forgetting to use an oven glove).

I think I'll get one of these and see how it goes.  Can't beat 200GB removable media!
If you do buy one, please let us all know what you think of it.
It looks like a quick and easy way to move offline data between machines.

This service would be more useful if there was some kind of USB device that could kill me if I fail to log in for a period of time.

Any pointers?

Some kind of track pall, perhaps?

I've never been very artistic with pumpkins, but I once made one of a logo for a website my brother and I started up.
It's nice that you kept a picture of that!

The picture is of what my wife just created from a pumpkin.

do they keep long - or get all distorted as they dry up (which would be interesting too!)
We're about to find out  :)
We sprayed it with some special fixative which ought to slow the rate of decay. Keeping it cold will help. To keep it cold will be more difficult than usual as we're experiencing temperatures around 18C at the moment. Typically we'd have had hard frosts by now, but not this year. That's very pleasant in the short term but kind of worrying in a wider context.

Living Room / Hallow-e'en
« Last post by cranioscopical on October 19, 2007, 09:18 AM »
Hallow-e'en is a big event here, in Canada.

It's also my son's birthday.
We didn't celebrate Hallow-e'en in the U.K. so, when we moved here my son, who was five at the time, was thrilled to find that everyone in his world would hand him a 'birthday' treat if he just knocked on their door.

The picture is of what my wife just created from a pumpkin.
We and others donate decorated pumpkins to a local organization that sells them and puts the proceeds towards food for some who are less fortunate than ourselves. It's fun and mildly useful at the same time.

Does anyone have Hallow-e'en favourite images/stories to share here?

Does Cody eat pumpkin seeds?

I am enduring a spell checker for now... What I hate about it is...
All you magical guys! I have to stumble along with my spelling checker ;)

Speaking of 'help' with language, try this:

From http://www.whitesmok...english-grammar.html

English Grammar software
The importance of proper English grammar usage cannot be
overemphasized. As we move through the beginning of the 21st
century, we are all becoming increasingly busier.

How would you like some help from that:)

That would be a cataclasm!

people tend to say "it's dead" instead of "It doesn't boot" :)

Most mornings I won't boot... but I'm not quite dead yet!

Living Room / Re: PocketPC or Palm?
« Last post by cranioscopical on October 13, 2007, 03:11 PM »
I am with you armando. My wife doesnt understand how I can justify spending money on this device when I can just use a notebook. To me, with the amount of stuff I add/delete each day, A portable organizer like this makes far more sense. Anyways, Does anyone else have any input?

I use an old Palm (IIIxe).  Keeps track of my life perfectly well.  Fits in a shirt pocket.  Uses over-the counter AAA batteries available just about anywhere I go.  Been using computers for a long time but this is a different animal.  Mind you, I have no need for more than basic calendar, notes, contacts.  Don't want web, e-mail, applications -- have other tools for that stuff.  No view on whether Palm/PocketPC is better.

Not I.  I don't use it a lot, but it's delightful to find what I want, starting from only the most hazy scrap of recollection.  Hmm <search for "Send key">
