Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: TELL me how many objects I am deleting!
« Last post by Stoic Joker on April 11, 2011, 07:03 AM »
-yes, nice one, Miles :-)

I don't know why some people want to decide if I should use Shift+Delete or not  [beep!][/beep!].  If you Delete a 10GB file, Windows will use a really long time to delete it. If you Shift+Delete the same file, it will be gone within a second. Other than that, I don't need to delete 45 files very often, but I need on a daily base to remove a few files, quite often one by one. This was my polite answer.

In situations like that where scrolling can compound the chance of a miss click. I usually highlight the files I want to keep first, because they're a much smaller group. Then use:

Alt + E (Edit menu)
Alt + I (Invert selection)
Shift + Delete

With practice it's much faster than it sounds ... and helps cut down on the swearing. :)

But oddly, from WP:

Mealworms are typically used as a food source for reptile, fish, and avian pets. They are also provided to wild birds in bird feeders, particularly during the nesting season, when birds are raising their young and appreciate a ready food supply. Mealworms are high in protein, which makes them especially useful as a food source. They are also commonly used for fishing bait.

...And that's why chewing is so important.

A zero tolerance policy for advertising (much as I like the idea) isn't going to help anybody. And OC seems to be doing a fine job of walking a very fine line ... At least to me.

So while it is not something I have any plans to use, it is also not something that would deter me from using a given piece of software.

Ren, if nothing else, you have convinced me of its innocence.

but there is no doubt in my mind that it is due to the option being ON in T-Clock.

I'm inclined to agree at this point. Can you think of anything that may be unique about your config? Any security or system management software that it may be interacting badly with?

Currently no, but I'll think about it (my to-do list is getting a bit out of hand... :)).

General Software Discussion / Re: How Apple “Lost” the PC Wars

"Apple won the war of ideas, which was what really matters."

Marvellous. Yet again, Apple is all about mind control. That quote sounds like a piece of propoganda from 1984.

It's all part of that Different Thinking they seem to want people to do. Take yesterday for example:

I'm on site trying to troubleshoot yet another Snow Leopard vs. a printer issue. All I wanted to do was open a pdf file, send it to the printer, and see how long it took...Along with what if any errors it thew.

This exercise took about 10 minutes. Windows or Linux, I could have done it in 7 seconds. But snApple ... Is Different...

The "Print" dialog, which seemed to only give layout bangles info ... Had a secondary dialog popup that actually required a tertiary popup to explain the fact that clicking on the 2nd dialogs Print button didn't actually print anything... Okay, then WTF did they call it a Print button for?!? Save Miscellaneous Print Related Settings Didn't quite fit on the button perhaps?

The best part was that the "explanation" dialog stated that "If you want to print or save the document you must go back to the first dialog and click print button". ...Now if I really wanted to save a document WHY for the love of doyc would I have selected PRINT? ...Is that just to help the completely stupid "save" things to paper?

Then ???.
So. the current discussion is about ADDITIONAL variables that can be put in there?

Yes.

Guess I'll have to go look at what can be put there now.

All the same format specifiers options as the main clock.

... I was thinking that the computer name & uptime combo might make a good default option for the tooltip popup that shows when you hover the mouse over the clock.

Or in options, have a place where user can select what he want to show on hover?

Already does that, bottom of mouse tab. ;)

Okay, I'm currently working on figuring out how the alternate language feature got broken. But when that's done I'll take a stab at doing the computer name option. I was thinking that the computer name & uptime combo might make a good default option for the tooltip popup that shows when you hover the mouse over the clock.

Actually the client did the install; straight through the defaults. Which should be fine as they were upgrading from the previous year, which worked fine, but I think was only the AV (now that you mention it).

It took them 3 days working with Panda's Tech Support to (fail to) get the license activated. However they did finally get it after doing a complete uninstall, running a (panda removal) cleaning tool, and then rebooting before the fresh install of the new version (my idea).

Then it hosed their network access  :wallbash: (hehe) *Sigh*

I don't know if there are plans to use the "GetTickCount64" function instead of the "GetTickCount" function in getting the uptime but it would be nice.

The new function does not have the 49.7 day limit.
It is supported starting with Vista.
(It does not require 64 bit OS).

http://msdn.microsof...724411(v=VS.85).aspx

Hm... (there are now) That is an interesting option. Actually I had been planning to try using the other method that leverages the info stored in HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA ... But this sounds much easier/simpler/quicker - Not to mention a 585 million year wrap/limit should be sufficient for most folks... ;)

Thank you!

Are there plans to use Environment variables for the display?
I would like to use the "COMPUTERNAME" variable in my display format, so I don't have to hard code the machine name.

This makes it easier for support when I need to know the computer name.

That's definitely an enterprise (only) level feature (me thinks). Are you from the company planing to do a T-Clock roll-out? Computer name shouldn't be difficult to grab/add, but what other environmental info bits (if any) might be good to toss in with it?

Last time I encountered this "Security Suite", I was troubleshooting a network performance issue. Browsing folders across the wire was taking about 1.5 minutes to load/display the contents.

After uninstalling Panda, network browsing was instantaneous.

I've got a Dell Inspiron Duo (Netbook/Tablet Convertible) here for one of our users. It's actually quite nice from working with it so far.
I'd heard it was pretty lackluster.

Me too, although it was mainly a the screen isn't as cutting edge breath taking as it could have (thoretically) been issue iirc. But after playing with it for a bit, it's really quite good. It is a bit dim on battery - to conserve said battery - but as I understand it, it will learn your behavior and dim the screen less often with use.

And the android 1.6 was the sticking point for me.

I'm not much of a "consumer"...So I like having an "full" OS to play with. My favorite toy is the command line.  *Shrug* :)

How is the weight in tablet mode?

Shit, were you under the impression it (came apart) made a difference too?!? ...I almost broke the friggin thing. It's heavy.

And how is the responsiveness?

It go zoom. I just installed Office 2010 std on it; install only took a few minutes ... and word etc pops right open in seconds (1 or 2-ish)

Being that I don't have a ton of experiance with touch screens (most piss me off) I'd say it's quite good. I managed to do the entire OOBE & setup via the touch screen without swearing.

It's just a casual, portable device to have with you.  Check time, check email (not necessarily write email), browse the web, watch some videos, go on facebook.

 A portable device to check the time with?!?  :wallbash: Yeah, if you're in the habbit of buying wrist watches from Flavor Flav...

And another Shoggoth springs into existence in our dimension.

I gotta go with barney here, much vehemence is coming from the pulpit ... but no details.

Sure specific general statements are made about do X not Y ... But no how is given.

Many of the concepts mentioned in this thread could take a great deal of time to explain, or research, I'm sure. But if (say) 3 - 5 lines of code were posted with them outlining what is to should be happening. Well... That could ge a long way towards being part-of-the-solution ...Don't Ya think?

While wraith808's example might not have been the most perfectly correct answer. It was at least one of the best attempts at a clear straight answer I've seen yet.

...I was/am shooting for either an incident (of black-out) where T-Clock's feature isn't enabled. Or a longer term episode like the one you mentioned having to shutdown to get out of.
I have had no incidents occur when Tcolock was not enabled.

The time I had to do the shutdown was when it was in one of the off-on blink manifestations.  The ones where it completely went to black and stayed there, I was able to get back in a normal way...though I do not remember now whether a log in was required for those.  Those happened first; the last 2 or 3 were the blinking kind.

Guess I need to do a bit of digging them ... Let me know how the test progresses.

Bug:

When using a negative width in the "Clock Text" tab, next time the hour changes the width will appear as if the width setting was double the amount I have chosen.
For example, if I set the width to -32, the next hour (or if I just change the system time manually) the width will go to and remain at -64 (even if it's impossible to set manually).
It's not really a problem as I can just set it to -16 to get -32, but thought I'd point it out.

If it matters (haven't really tested every possibility...), my time format is "yyyy-mm-dd hh:nn:ss".

Just so I can duplicate this properly (first try failed), you are saying that the setting in the properties dialog is doubling (which has a corresponding ill effect on the clock's display output), correct?

And would I be correct in assuming that you are using the latest released build (95) of T-Clock?

Just for education, when "monitor off" is commanded (by either Tclock's call or something else) are you saying it is just back light being turned off and the screen data is really still there?

No, the exact opposite is true. If T-Clock is guilty, then the monitor should shutdown completely (and logoff [caused by source unknown]). If the Backlight bulb is faulty, then the ghost image of the desktop should still be visible.

Your no. 1 will be hard to do as it is only off for a moment and actually there seems to be a "fade-to-black" transition going on, although very fast, as it goes into black.  But it comes back almost instantly, so seeing what is faintly still there during the off time, if anything, will be iffy.

I was/am shooting for either an incident (of black-out) where T-Clock's feature isn't enabled. Or a longer term episode like the one you mentioned having to shutdown to get out of.
