N.A.N.Y. 2015 / Re: NANY 2015 Pledge: Markdown Previewer
« Last post by wraith808 on October 08, 2014, 02:15 PM »
it should work with anything.  Basically, whatever file you have up, I'd hook into the filesystemwatcher for that particular file, and when it is changed (i.e. saved), I'd re-render it.  That way you can use any editor... and still have the benefit of preview as you go.

That's the idea, anyway.

NANY 2015 Release Information

Application NameMarkdownBuddy
Short DescriptionTool for viewing the parsed version of a markdown document
Supported OSesWindows 7 (Should work in Vista/8 also, but untested)
Web Pagehttp://thinkshui.net...tware/markdownbuddy/
Setup FilePortable
DescriptionMarkdown has taken off in a big way, and I use it in everything from publishing posts on websites to documentation in my code to writing fiction.  I love the descriptive nature of the formatting, and that all of the files are in plain text!  In many cases, however, I like to write in different barebones tools- but I can't see how it looks when it's formatted without opening it in some other editor.  I like the editors that have the real-time preview, but my favorite ones to write in don't have that facility.

On the mac, there is a application called Marked.  It is a Markdown Previewer. Now, you might think as I did- what is the use in having something that's not an editor?  It just previews?  But after you get further into markdown and the various tools out there, it quickly becomes evident that such a tool is invaluable if not essential.
FeaturesImplemented
  • Allows you to pick a file to be previewed
  • Allows the preview to be refreshed manually
  • Allow the export of the parsed document (HTML or PDF)
  • Specify an opacity of the window
  • Allow the changing of the background of the window
  • Allow the user to choose to update the document when it is saved

Planned
  • Allow the user to specify whether the window should always be on top or not
  • Allow the changing of options in the parsing of the document

InstallationWith .NET 4.5 installed, unzip application to location and run.
UninstallingDelete application install location.
NotesRequires .NET 4.5.

Original Precis:

I've gotten into Markdown in a big way, and one thing that I miss from my mac when I'm writing on windows is Marked.  So just like last year when I did the overlay tool from a tool that I found on the Mac, I'm going to do something similar to Marked for Windows.

From the Marked site:
Marked is a previewer for Markdown files. Use it with your favorite text editor and it updates every time you save. With robust features for previewing, reviewing and exporting beautiful documents, you can work in plain text while reveling in rich formatting.

Found Deals and Discounts / NaNoWriMo Scrivener Offer
« Last post by wraith808 on October 08, 2014, 09:54 AM »
From now until December 7th, use Scrivener for free.

NaNoWriMo 2014 Trial - for Mac and Windows
Scrivener's first users were Wrimos - I posted an early beta of Scrivener for the Mac on the NaNo Technology forums back in 2005, and those initial users kindly spread the word about Scrivener and provided feedback that has helped shape and improve the program. It has therefore been our great pleasure to give something back by sponsoring NaNoWriMo for the past few years, and so here we are sponsoring NaNoWriMo 2014, with some great offers for those taking part. We're also offering a special trial version that will last you all the way throughout November, even if you've tried Scrivener before - read on for details.

Special Trial Version
Scrivener's trial normally runs for thirty days of use, but so that you can start using Scrivener before NaNoWriMo begins without worrying about the trial expiring part-way through November, the special NaNo trial available on this page will run from the moment you start using it all the way up until 7th December. So you can download it, get used to its features, use it for your writing throughout November, and if you like it you can buy Scrivener at a discounted price using one of the special offers below.

50% Discount for All NaNoWriMo 2014 Winners
If you achieve your personal target to become a NaNoWriMo 2014 Winner, you will be eligible for a 50% discount off the regular licence of Scrivener (which is normally $45 for the Mac version and $40 for the Windows version). Details will appear on the Winner Goodies page at the start of December.

20% Discount for Everyone Else
Even if you don't reach your target this year, you can still get 20% off the regular price of Scrivener by entering the discount code NANOWRIMO into the coupon code text field of our online web store.

Quick rule of thumb: if you don't want anybody to know what you're doing online, at the very least don't do it at work or in school.

This!

In the case of Dr. Who or StarTrek ( and NG was far better IMHO) I think it's not so much we miss the old versions of the shows as much as we miss the old version of ourselves that got so much enjoyment from watching them.

Had to give a shout out for DS9, which was my favorite for various reasons.

There are ways around it... but in general, most workplaces frown on the things that would get around it.  Connect via https to secure communications.

That is what I'm thinking is the next step.  But this particular way- dishing the same content to all is easier to test.
4358
Well, I'm in that holding pattern.  It would seem better and more professional not to let you get this far... especially as it says 'Ping Someone!' with no inkling of whom to ping.

Not all of the Doctor's companions were hot babes.

No.  Really?!?   ;D

We should have another poll for companions.  For me it's between Martha Jones and Amy Pond.

Musician Shows How to Sing Two Notes at Once in Mesmerizing Video

in Music | October 6th, 2014

Anna-Maria Hefele, a musician based in Munich, has an unusual talent. She can sing two notes at once. In the music world, it’s known as polyphonic overtone singing, and it’s believed that the practice originated and still endures in Mongolia. Above, Hefele offers a pretty captivating five-minute display of her technique. On her website, she notes that she offers concerts, lecture performances, and workshops in overtone singing. In fact, there’s a workshop being held later this month near Salzburg, Austria. Find updates on Hefele’s Facebook page. Enjoy!

She's pretty amazing! (She's also rather pretty too.  ;) )

Avi Kaplan from Pentatonix can do this too.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight

His parts in this song merge throat singing with dubstep overtone.

Living Room / Re: Win10 Navigation Pane scrambled

As far as I know, each partition on a hard disk is assigned a volume serial code by the NTFS file system first, then a drive-letter is assigned. Possibly the sort order in the pane sorts on volume serial instead of the drive letter as you expect.

This is quite low-level and most likely to be altered in the registry. Fixing this could take as much as downloading a new fresh iso...which is most likely the better option as you don't trust the copy you have at hand. At least there is also a 64-bit iso to play with.  :)

That's the other option that I've seen- in the disk management utility, you can change that sort order.  Because I had an old drive with windows, and then installed another drive and set that to C, that drive was in the wrong order.  I was able to fix it in the disk management utility.

My Non-Vote
Tom Baker of the old school... but I didn't vote because David Tennant and Matt Smith firmly won me over.

No, not currently... but I could add that for a setting.  You can change the size of it manually, and then change the settings to stretch, so that it will always stretch the image to the size of the overlay rather than the other way around.

So why the hell would they powder caffeine if they didn't want you to snort it?

All I have to say is that I see these posts on the guitar, and realize how far I really have to go.  I just wish I hadn't taken so many shortcuts when I was younger on the piano... a lot of that would come in useful now  :-[

Either you give them what they ask for... or accept that they might wash their hands of the situation.
:D
If you read my original post to will see that I was asking for "ideas". I was hoping for a response from someone that had the same or similar problem which would indicate a flaw or a bug in the Win10 media. Instead I received a ridiculous request for a picture of the problem. That's when the hand washing started. Mine! I already knew the answer was worthless and washed my hands of it.
If you don't know the answer: don't reply  :-[
Thanks anyway  :D

Actually, I do know a possible answer, as I've had the problem in other versions of Windows.  But, as you're not interested...  :-[  Best of luck!

Just a reminder: The word 'free' is not part of Microsoft's vocabulary.  ;)

The word 'free' is not a part of any corporate entity's vocabulary.  People thought it was a part of Google's.  Look at where we are now.

If you're asking for help... and someone asks you for data, well it's at that point a decision has to be made.  Either you give them what they ask for... or accept that they might wash their hands of the situation.  Especially in the case of something as ... benign as a screenshot.

I think as long as it's not politico-religious based in an overt way, it's fine for silly humor.  The line isn't *that* fine that it's not obvious when something doesn't belong.

Sweet! Feels good to help out. Even if money is a bit tight at the moment, I would probably have just spent it on beer anyhow. So at least it's going to something a bit more productive than my inebriation!

And you saved some brain cells! :)
