Hmmmmmmm I used to stick in smileys from 3rd party smiley pages just by using image tags. Now it just shows the text.  For example

[image]http://smileys.smilchat.net/emoticon/expressions/surprise/3d-surpris.gif[/image]

Doesn't show the smiley.

General Software Discussion / chrome renderer process limit
« Last post by MilesAhead on June 02, 2012, 05:10 PM »
I'm running chromium 21.x
that was posted on Softpedia recently

Seems to run fine but it sure uses a lot of processes. I was looking through the chrome command line switches and noticed --renderer-process-limit and tried it.

By default Task Manager showed a process per tab plus a process per enabled extension plus 2 or 3 or even 4 more. With --renderer-process-limit=4  on the shortcut Target line, now no matter how many tabs I open I seem to max out at 7 copies of chrome.exe running.

So far I can't feel any difference.  Just wondering if anyone else is experimenting with this setting?

I must get the CPU cycles left after the temp files are all deleted. Guess it's smarter to ask somebody who will get good searches instead of doing it myself.  Improves the heuristic somehow. :)

btw you are right about change. I did hours of searching a couple of weeks ago. Google, bing, yahoo.. nuthin'.

Type in "ordinary man rules the world" in google just now. It's like the third in the list. This is really silly. It's like you only find stuff when you stop looking for it.  Ok, I'm sold. Google of evil incarnate inc. is now def. search. :)

Hate to say it but 10 seconds on Google ;)

Guess duck duck go and Bing just doesn't have the same coverage. I try to avoid google but maybe that's a lost cause. Like not using MS software. :)

When I searched with your phrase it came up immediately. But not with mine. So it begs the question how did you get your search phrase from what I wrote unless you happened to know something already? I just googled with what I posted originally and got some middle east terrorist mumbo jumbo.  Must be the search gods boycotting me.

In any case it's just vague memory left over from my H. G. Wells period. :)

Glad you like it. As I was messing around with several ideas I though why not just let people put the stuff where they want in the simplest way?

Me, I leave my screen res at 1280 x 1024 and I use the same work area. I don't use any apps that need to change the screen res. Just saving and loading the raw numbers is enough for my use. The fewer calculations the better.  Less likely to break. :)

If you change the size of a window ruining the centering just use TicClick to zap it to a centered position. Then you can use the Alt Arrow keys to move it a bit. I find I like a large centered rectangle for text editors, but I like the bottom to be closer to the taskbar.  Alt Down Arrow a couple of times and I'm lined up.  Then I just hotkey-z-ed it.  Now I can snap any editor from a tiny frame to this dominant position.  Nice. :)

Living Room / Movie Title question for film buffs
« Last post by MilesAhead on June 01, 2012, 06:14 PM »
I'm trying to remember an old black and white movie I saw years ago.  I can't remember the lead actor. It's an English language movie.  I have the impression it's an American film. It was probably made in the 1940s or 50s. All I can remember is the general plot:

An "ordinary man" is given absolute power to rule the world.  He tries to put several policies into effect that seem like good ideas.  But the effects are always contrary to his intentions. He seeks advice from famous leaders of history. From statesmen to tyrants they line up in the waiting room and he consults with them in turn.  That's about all I can recall. It's one of those "democracy allegory" flicks. It's the type of flick that should star Claude Rains. But I checked his filmography on IMDB.  No dice.

Anyone know this one? I posted on a film board with a sub-forum just for these types of questions. 2 weeks and no response.

MoveIt 1.0.4.0 Added Open Home Folder command to Tray Menu. It simply opens the folder that contains the running MoveIt.exe. Makes it easier to edit the .ini file.

General Software Discussion / Re: Shape Shift 1.0.9.0 and MoveIt 1.0.3.0
« Last post by MilesAhead on June 01, 2012, 02:11 AM »
MoveIt 1.0.3.0 Added 'z' Custom Save feature.  Size and position a window, then hit hotkey 'z' to get an InputBox.  There you may enter one of the t b l r c s   letters to save it for that section. It simply writes and reads a string of the raw numbers. But it should work well enough if you always use the same screen res and work area as I do.  To restore the built in default for any letter, edit the ini file.  The keys have the format Custom_n where n is the letter of the section.  Just rub out the string after the "=" or delete the line entirely.  Run MoveIt to load the new settings. If it's already running in the tray it will be replaced with a new instance.

Just got this going tonight so there may be a few quirks.

I got rid of the "Special" option as this is much better. Lets you size each area however you wish.

Not at all. You should have seen my ripping my hair out doing those "rotating grid" calculations!! :)

Now that I know how to check for resizeable window attribute I'm thinking of adding a shift key option to TicClick to have it resize as well as move, if the border allows it.  There's so many ways of doing this stuff. Wish I had a more modern multi-monitor setup so I could work that angle.  But I'm sure the majority still have a single monitor(although it's probably not a CRT like mine anymore.) :)

edit: Hmm, I find with MoveIt I don't really feel the need for TicClick. It's more flexible just to drag the window near where I want it, then use the Alt Arrow keys to snug it to an edge. It doesn't have to be in the middle or in a corner.

I don't have directory opus. I have no idea what it's hotkeys do. But just because you use a right or left Alt I don't see how it eliminates the conflict with Alt Arrow. DO is still going to do something when you hit Alt Arrow.

Try setting a completely different modifier key or combination.

UpdateEnv 1.0.0.4 Added an .ini file option ToastDirection.  The "Toast" is a slide panel that displays near the system tray by default. This is value 0. Center edge of screen left top right bottom corresponds to 1 2 3 4. This adjustment is mainly if you use other apps with the Toast sliding panel you can move it to avoid conflict. Or if you just don't like it sliding up over the system tray.

MoveIt 1.0.2.0 I made a few small updates to MoveIt and put it on my hotkey page. Same link as first post.

I changed the 't' and 'b' to use 25% of work area height for Top and 75% work area height for Bottom. Both use about 95% of work area width.  I added a tray menu option "Special" that also leaves a 5% gap at the bottom.. just for 't' and 'b'. It leaves about a 5% gap on the left so if you do have a few desktop icons you can still click them.

I made 'c' Center larger and centered it more accurately.
This app is simple but there's much less to go wrong. :)

The zip on the site includes custom icon and ahk_L source code.

Living Room / Re: Are we allowed to avoid the "My Docs" mess in Win7?
« Last post by MilesAhead on May 29, 2012, 07:33 PM »
Hmm, I should have thought of MyDocs a long time ago. I don't use My Downloads or My Videos or any of that. And it's really annoying when apps just stick the stuff there without asking.  It would be one thing if the stuff was consistent across OS versions but it seems they shift the stuff around with every major release.

I thought at first it might not be so bad. At least if the folder was Documents and videos were in Videos you might be able to double click down from Desktop and find stuff. No way. They stick the My prefix on so you have to wait 5 seconds for your eyes to focus and pick between My Documents My Videos and My Royal Pain In The Ass folders. :)

Right now I'm going to change the My Documents button in RocketDock to point to MyDocs folder!! :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Disk write cache (Windows XP)
« Last post by MilesAhead on May 29, 2012, 03:00 PM »
Just as an aside, I don't know if any MS servers are still configured this way, but I remember when I ran NT 4 Server I got a kick out of the fact that every little disk write I could hear the data flushed to the HD. If I wrote a 10 byte .ini file I could hear it write to the HD right away.  Made me laugh.

But like the other responses, I don't understand how you could cache disk data for hours. For one thing the file system cache would be using up most of the ram on the system. As for the UPS, only business industrial size could maintain power for a long period of time. The home use types typically can keep you going for several minutes. Long enough to save your data and shut down. If it took hours, none of those UPS would work.

I would invest in a UPS. Even with write caching disabled, it the power goes out in the middle of the disk write, it's going to scramble the data. It's worth it, even if you can only afford one of the cheapie brands.

edit: the only situation that comes to mind where losing a few seconds of disk write might "destroy hours worth of work" would be some long math calculation. Say if you were calculating an MD5 Sum for a 800 GB file. Unless you process it all, it's gone.  Seems it would have to be a pretty specialized circumstance similar to that case.

I cheated! :)  I surgically removed the grids from SectionAte.  Then I changed t and b keys to set up my browser on bottom and something like Notepad on top so they fit nicely together.

It still has the Alt Arrow keys. That's all I need with TicClick. Not really a grid type of guy. I tried GridMove just to check it out. Obviously a lot of work went into it. I'm just not enamored of grids. More curious than anything. :)

Anyway here's a screen shot of my "MoveIt" hack at work.

SectionAte gets the Section 8!!  After experimenting with various work areas I find that for me it's more hassle than it's worth.  I'm using a cut down version with no grids just to size stuff to convenient shapes.

Anyway, if anyone who already has the source wants to mod it, feel free. I'm taking it down from my site so I don't get support emails. Too much of a headache.  Sorry. :)
4372
I thought I had this stable but it turns out of you complicate the desktop setup, such as having a work area with numbers quite different from the screen res on several sides, the calculations get really hairy.  I'm dumping 'g' as it just confuses the issue.

I'll never stop messing with this unless I just switch to Grid A is it, and set your settings to move the dividers around.  All these rotations are insane!
4373
I did not want to sound rude or demanding, I was merely stating my observations. What you did here is great.

Not at all. I didn't mean to seem peeved. I just meant doing it this hotkey way is kind of a kludge. But you can get maybe 90% of what the sophisticated apps do with a few days of work. It's trying to monitor stuff and have everything automated that turns it from 6 days work to 6 months. :)

On the grid change hotkey, I suppos I could have an option for the user-defined hotkey.  Either user defined keyboard hotkey is for sizing, or for grid switching with A - F. That wouldn't be difficult. I prefer mouse based hotkey for resize anyway.  Those who wnat the keyboard hotkey, it would stay as is by default.  I could add another menu choice with check mark for "Keyboard Hotkey Switches Grid" or something like that.

I noticed I left a thing for 's' square when I moved it from the other app.. holding down Shift made the window a bit bigger. I like top and bottom size as is. But maybe I'll add the shift so if someone wants 1/2 screen without using the up/down grid they can just hold down shift. It will be like an Easter Egg or something. :)

I'll play around with stuff and see what the next rev. should be. Thanks for your thoughts. :)

@tomos do you think it would be useful to change 't' and 'b' so that they work like 'l' and 'r' and cover 1/2 the work area? Or is it better as is?
