Heh, heh, I haven't asked them to remove the claim about the support, but I've ranted at them numerous times about not living up to it!

Thanks for alerting us to that, borengate. I suspect you're right and that they have noticed this thread. At this point any signs of life are welcome.

Wow, Don. Thanks for the link to that part of the XYplorer FAQ. I won't be implementing the changes any time soon, but it's nice to know that it can be done

Ah. I see what you mean, justice. Thanks for clarifying - I suspected that that is what you meant, but wasn't sure.

I've bought three products from Xara online using the same e-mail address each time and have never received any spam from them. Odd. Follow Carol's advice - hopefully doing so will get you sorted out.

I note from having visited the Xara forum for the first time in ages that everyone seems to have moved on (from the paid update kerfluffle). Looks like business as usual now. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next couple of months (as it will have been a year since Magix bought them out). I wonder if we'll see v. 4 soon... and what the upgrade path will be...

Brilliant.

Are not Windows partisans just as bad?

Of course, but my perception is that they are, if not outnumbered, certainly out yelled...

Anytime I'm talking to someone and hear that they use a Mac I just cringe and hope that I'm not talking to yet another Apple fundamentalist Jihad psycho.

Ha, ha, I know exactly what you mean.

Just to note, RealDraw Pro is nice. However, from reading over the forum postings it appears to be abandoned at the moment. I'll keep my eye on it...

Jason Cross at ExtremeTech has posted a piece on what he likes least about Macs - the Mac faithful. Quite an interesting read - I found myself recognizing people and their behaviour in what he was describing.

*Darwin throws his cookies at his computer monitor. Feels sheepish*

Ha ha, Lashiec. No need to hide (projectile cookies notwithstanding). I didn't really have an issue with QuickTime (like you I quite liked it - I even have a licence for the Pro version), but I seized upon the opportunity to get rid of Apple software. iTunes was really getting up my nose and I ripped it out (all those services and tasks running in the background with no way to get rid of them). I decided to get rid of QuickTime as well because I simply do not use any of the Pro features and because an Apple-free Windows machine just feels right!  :P

Hmm... put like that, doublewitt, I can see why Beth is less optimistic than I am about what this portends for gemx. I honestly hadn't thought of it in those terms - was too busy being happy that there a actual signs of life. You're right, of course. Far better to reactivate the forum and let people say their piece. Mystifying.

« Last post by Darwin on October 10, 2007, 09:09 AM »
Heh, heh - I over-edited my previous reply as I speculated about the same connection between my refund and these latest moves at gemx. Prominent in ALL of my communications to gemx, including the messages sent through SWREG, was the point that they shouldn't be providing links to forms of communication that aren't supported. Of course, I also demanded that they update customers as to what's going on, at the very least via a news item on their home page. Note that despite the refund, my Do-Organizer registration file is still available to me for download and my DSM's remain unanswered. Crazy.

If this trully IS a response to my refund, they are off their rockers. They could have avoided, or at least delayed, the refund going out and possibly retained me as a customer by simply entering into a dialogue with me! Instead it appears that they'd rather lose money and a customer than explain themselves...

Bizarre. It's a step in the right direction, but why don't they go the extra INCH and post something, anything, in the News section on the homepage?

No no, I WANT that feature.  The ability to turn on a science-fictiony computer throbbing/chittering noise synced with CPU activity for a specific task.

Ah...

General Software Discussion / Re: Replace Windows XP's Icons
« Last post by Darwin on October 10, 2007, 07:51 AM »
Crap. I should have read Chaim's original post more closely. Chaim! Don't buy StyleXP! There are free alternatives that accomplish the same thing. StyleXP just replaces your Uxtheme.dll and provides you with an alternative front end to the default Windows Themes interface and charges you $19.95 for it. You can patch Uxtheme.dll yourself for free and use non-MS Windows themes.

Alternatively, Stardock's Windowblinds (or the Object Desktop suite which includes Windowblinds but adds a lot of additional functionality, including icon editing and replacement) accomplishes the same thing without touching the uxtheme.dll and is much more configureable...Of course, like StyleXp these are shareware alternatives.

Interesting fodder. I wonder how GOMPlayer is handling these file types? The Preferences section allows the user to opt to associate QT and RP file types with native GOM codecs and as mentioned removing both QT and RP Alternatives also ridded me of Apple and Real settings folders. Still, I suspect that GOM is using the official codecs as well. I don't care, it works, it's two fewer programmes installed on my machine and I am happy!

OK, thanks guys. I'll have to check this out for myself.

EDIT: Actually, no need... This thread got me thinking and I took a look at GOMPlayer, which is my favourite media player - it has its own codecs to handle both QT and RP files. So... I uninstalled both QT Alt and RP Alt and associated GOMPlayer with all of their respective file types. Not only do I no longer have any Apple or Real components installed (as evident from the fact that the Apple and Real folders are now absent from Program Files and the various Application Data folders under Documents and Settings) but all of their files play just fine in GOM

Well worth the price! Even at $49.95 (which is what I *think* a lifetime licence will cost after today), it's a bargain - but if you can get in for $29.95 now, I wouldn't hesitate.
4323
Disturbing thrumming/humming/grinding noise that rises & lowers in pitch with CPU activity.

Wouldn't this be more likely to be due to disk or fan activity? If so, I don't see how ProcessTamer, a software solution, would be able to do much for a hardware problem.

Hi Jim - yes, I was aware that you can keep the last version that was released within your subscription beyond the end of your subscription (I should have mentioned that!). My main beef with Stardock is that there is no mechanism to simply download the installers and archive them; you have to use Stardock Central, which is actually fairly convenient but represents a software installation that to my mind is unnecessary. Anyway, I'm not planning on renewing, either. Like you, I don't think that $34.95 is very attractive AND I simply don't use enough of the suite to warrant it anymore... FWIW WB 6 seems to be a big improvement over WB 5. Like you, I found that 5 didn't play nice with my system and I could never get the developers to acknowledge that there was a problem with WB - they always insisted that it was my system. However, like you, removing it always made any problems I had disappear. WB 6 doesn't have those problems, for me, under WinXP Pro. Just a head's up... YMMV!

Interesting, I was unaware that Microangelo handled icon replacement (thought it was simply an editor). It fared well in Carrol's (Hamradio) Icon Tool Shootout and would definitely be worth a look. The attraction of Stardock's Object Desktop is that it really is ridiculously cheap (though be warned that you're on a yearly subscription treadmill - $34.95 a year, though I renewed recently for $20 or something - they had a special on) and handles everything you can imagine in terms of modding Windows.
