Post New Requests Here / Re: Windows Shortcut transformation
« Last post by 4wd on February 28, 2011, 08:46 PM »
I understand the possibility to rewrite shortcuts not in the original folder, only in the target folder. That's the transformation.

This was in the case where you wanted to shift all the targets of shortcuts to somewhere else so you could delete the files in their original locations.

I understand the possibility to delete shortcuts in the original folder, but for me is not interesting this thing.

This was so you could use it like a simple backup/organisation kind of thing.  eg. You could collect shortcuts to various files/folders on your drives into one folder, (without having to physically move them), then later, (say once a week/month), just run the program to copy them all to one place without doing it one at a time.  The shortcuts are deleted ready for the next time you want to do it for a different set of files/folders.

I had to add the shortcut deletion anyway for the rewriting section so I made it a separate option.

One thing I forgot to do was check to see if there's enough drive space on the destination, so I think currently if you run out it'll just show up as failed copies in the log.  Calculating total copy size is something I can add but it would probably slow down the operation if there's folders with lots of files.  Something I'll look into.

Crap, I just noticed you could change the subject
I thought you could only do that if you're the thread starter?

You're right, just tried it.

It only changes the subject of your reply, so if you didn't start the thread it's useless in respect to what I'm suggesting.

Living Room / Re: Help with Win7 Multi-Monitor problem
« Last post by 4wd on February 28, 2011, 08:00 PM »
I just plugged a Dell 1704FPT via a DVI->VGA adapter into my HD4850, (main monitor is a ViewSonic via DVI), and rebooted.

Both monitors displayed BIOS info, the ViewSonic displayed Windows 7 startup, and then when the Desktop came up on the ViewSonic it was extended to the Dell.

Using Catalyst 10.12 here on 7HP x64 but not SP1.

You haven't said whether the Sony will function if it's the only monitor plugged in.

Have you checked the Sony website for monitor drivers?
Windows might not have correct/up-to-date drivers with the right frequency characteristics for the monitor.

According to Sony, Windows 7 is not on the list of supported OS': SDM-HX93

A combination of both could also be quite user-friendly: Update the original release-posting with all the extra features and options you have (you have it summed up in a readme, right?) *and* make a new post with just the stuff added this time.

The reason I thought the last post was because when you hit the Last Post icon, that's where you go.  Whereas, if you modify your release post, people would still need to jump to the last post and then back to the release post.

I'm sure there's a compromise/rational solution in here somewhere, just not sure what it is.  Maybe like skwire has done it with his Launching Pad except instead of a forum per coder, just a general forum where anyone who has written a program can start a thread with his/her own Launch Pad and can update it which would trigger it into being a New Post but users would reply back at the original thread.

(you have it summed up in a readme, right?)
Sorry, being a typical male I'm instruction-agnostic - just ask my other half ;D

What's the logic in not doing this if someone else was the last poster?

Because alternating posts read more like a conversation.

Current method for with OP replying to himself.
OP: I've release project X v0.1, see if there's any bugs.
(Couple of days later with no reply)
OP: Update X v0.02, fixed yaddayadda.
(Still no comment a few days later)
OP: WTF, it just nuked my drive!  Don't use it!

That reads like a monologue, no indication of anyone taking any interest.

What I suggest.
OP: Release project X v0.01, have fun.  (Modified a couple of days later after no posts and promoted to New Post status)
Release v0.02, fixed drive nuking bit.  Surprised no one caught it.
New poster: Hey thanks for that, you saved all my backed up GMail.  (Maybe a month later)

That reads more like a conversation, interaction between users.

I don't know about you but if there is a string of consecutive posts from the same person, I tend to read the first and then jump to the next person unless there's something interesting referenced back to one of the first persons' other posts.  (Read it slowly, it does make sense......kind of.)

this is what i do, i update the first post and change the subject to signify the current release version number and date, and then make a reply post with the changelog for the latest release.

Crap, I just noticed you could change the subject - still it's not something I like doing unless I'm the one who started the thread.
Remember I was talking about this more for the Coding Snacks area where the threads are started by others.

Site/Forum Features / Suggestion for Modify of your last post
« Last post by 4wd on February 28, 2011, 03:15 PM »
This is possibly of more use in the Coding Snacks area but I'm wondering how hard it would be for a feature to be added to the post modification function which would check to see if any posts had been made since your last in the thread and if it was none it would treat your modification as if it were a new post.  ie. It would only work if the last post in the thread was being modified by the poster.

My thinking is that currently you have to bump a thread with a reply in order, for example, to announce an update to a program, so that it's moved to the top of the forum so that anyone interested can take note.

My idea is if you were the last poster, you could change attachments, feature list, bug extermination, etc and this would be seen by the system as a new post and bump it automatically to let people know.

It just seems neater than having a run of posts by the same poster saying there's a new update.

An arbitrary expiry date on the feature would probably also be advisable, eg. 14 days, after which any modifications don't automatically bump the thread.

Does this make sense?

I hope so, it would be so good if queued copy/move finally made it into DOpus without having to use third party software, eg. TeraCopy.
4283
Just download the x64 installer, the license is the same for both.  You don't need to ask, you've paid for a license to install one instance on one computer, it doesn't matter if it's x86 or x64.

Also, remember your license currently gives you the right to install it on a laptop you own and use.  eg. A single instance license lets you install it on your desktop and your laptop concurrently.

Single, Dual and Five Install Licence packs include one free personal laptop Licence for the registered owner. In addition to the number of licensed installs the registered owner may install Opus on a single, personal laptop owned by the registered user.

Could you tell us the model of HDD and OS?

A lot of new 1TB and bigger now use Advanced Format, (basically 4kB sectors instead of 512B), you may need to jumper the drive to enable it to work correctly on XP, (if it's single partition), or use software from the manufacturers site.

Still, that shouldn't affect the ability to format it.

Have you tried Parted Magic ?

Living Room / Re: Gmail accidentally resets some accounts
« Last post by 4wd on February 27, 2011, 11:03 PM »
I have 7 GMail accounts, I only use GMail accounts, I have no other email accounts.

If any or all of them got wiped of emails it's not a problem because any of the accounts I use for important stuff are POP3 accessed and downloaded to my local machine and then backed up.

Non-important accounts are IMAP and as such I don't really care if all the emails in them are lost.

Honestly, if your emails are that important to you, then it doesn't matter who is providing your email service - you should be providing a backup for them.

If you're [dumb|naive|uninformed|silly|blase|etc] enough to leave anything that's important to you solely in the hands of another then ultimately you are responsible for what happens to it, not them.

PS. Considering the amount of crap one of my friends collects in his account, wiping it would be the best thing.   :P

Now repeat after me: ImgBurn, ImgBurn, ImgBurn.........

Extract with UniExtract and delete everything except:
ImgBurn.exe
ImgBurnPreview.exe
ReadMe.txt

does that mean it's then portable?

Just extract the installer and keep the three files above, it has been able to be run that way since a very long time.

I've never installed it and I've been using it since 1.???, I don't use a /PORTABLE switch either but the ini has 'PortableMode=1' as the second line.

I noticed that with the last two releases. 2.4.4.0 didn't have that junk, but 2.5.2.0 and 2.5.5.0 both have Ask Toolbar and Uniblue apps. They DO honor the deselection during installation though at least.

Since I've never used the installer it comes packaged in, I have to say I've never noticed these :)

  • Winning the lottery.

Do you need beta testers?

If you mean by 'beta testers', someone who'll buy the tickets and then give me all proceeds of winnings, (I'd reimburse you the ticket cost - I'm not that much of a skinflint), then the answer is yes  ;D

OK, on with the perpetually evolving piece of randomly generated code: Short2Real v0.19

2011-02-24_21-18-42.jpg

Since you last possibly downloaded it:
  • Added: Option to just duplicate the folder tree, no copying is done.  Selecting this will disable the Delete and Rewrite options - makes sense once you think about it.
  • Added: Option to rewrite the original shortcuts to point to the new file/folder location.  Only done if the copy was successful because it has to delete the original shortcut first.  The Delete and Rewrite options are mutually exclusive, selecting one disables the other.

The next time you might download it:
  • Progressbar - still a definite maybe.

Feel free to test it out on your most prized files, files where if they disappeared you'd run around the house screaming, "I'll kill him!  Honest to <bleep> I'll kill the <bleeping> <bleep>!!!"

BTW, I have no idea if this will work on a computer using strange foreign characters, (foreign as in non-English).

See here.

Here's a mostly finished version, there's a couple more things I want to do/cleanup but it seems to work OK - it hasn't formatted my drive so that's a bonus.

2011-02-24_14-15-24.jpg

What's been done:
  • Added: A real GUI
  • Added: Duplicate folder tree option.  It obeys the state of the Recursive copy option, ie. it'll only work on the source directory unless the Recursive option is selected.  Empty folders will be copied if this option is enabled.  It will duplicate the folder tree even if no shortcuts are found.
  • Added: Delete shortcut option.  It will only delete the original shortcut if the copy was successful, (that's the theory anyway), the existing source folder structure will be left intact.
  • Added: About button

Thinking of doing:
  • Adding an option to just duplicate the folder tree.  ie. Not to copy files/folders linked by a shortcut.
  • Adding an option to rewrite the shortcuts to point to the destination copy.
  • Adding a progressbar, (but don't count on it).
  • Winning the lottery.
  • Going on holiday to Tenerife :D

You can refresh the display by using F5 after the copy has finished.

NOTE: This program only acts upon shortcuts, (*.lnk), therefore it won't copy real files and it'll only copy the folder structure if the Duplicate folder tree option is selected.

See here.

You got that one too?!? I thought I was special...  :(

You are!

To Microsoft you are a highly valued wallet...customer.  :D

It showed up on my Win7 x64 Pro dev machine about the same time, but revalidated after a reboot or two (I'm thinking at some point it reinstalled part of the WGA stuff, but I wasn't really paying attention).

Yes, it was a WGA update so after I re-installed I did every update except that one.  After about a week it disappeared from the list of updates, (I only get notified, not auto-update), so I could have possibly waited to see if my machine came good but I took it as an opportunity to fix some other things that had gone screwy in the OS, (eg. VSS wasn't working anymore).

The program only works on shortcuts, if a folder has no shortcuts in it then it won't be replicated in the destination because it was empty.

I think you might have to do what I suggested back here so I know exactly what the before and after is supposed to look like.

OK, found a bug that was turning folders into files, (kind of like wine into water ;) ), so that will fix that problem.  However, it still won't recreate folders that are empty, (no shortcut in them), because it only works on shortcuts.

They had an update mid way through last month that suddenly decided my Win7 computer was suddenly non-genuine.

I took it as an opportunity to re-install the computer but decided against installing that particular update and lo and behold, it was removed a week later.

I think I'll be waiting until SJ has been running it a month or so before I install it :P

Never mind, it was because I didn't allow System or Hidden folders.

I'll put another up in a  couple of hours.

I have seven in the portatil

Is that like a porta-potty ?   :P

There seems to be a problem with the function to display folders so it may take a little while to find it.

So in the meantime, here's the no gui version.

Living Room / Re: SSD usage recommendations
« Last post by 4wd on February 22, 2011, 04:48 PM »
Security concerns, 4wd? It's simple: if you are going to toss out the SSD, put a hammer to it. Or, if the SSD supports the ATA "secure erase" command (and does it properly), that'd be safe.

I wasn't specifically talking about EOL of the product, eg. you're silly enough to leave your laptop on display in the car or someone nicks your PC from home.

I thought one of the points of the article was that Secure Erase wasn't properly implemented in some controllers and there was no way you could verify it had done it.

“The danger, however, is that it relies on the controller to properly sanitize the internal storage location that holds the encryption key and any other derive values that might be useful in cryptanalysis,” the researchers wrote. “Given the bugs we found in some implementations of secure erase commands, it is unduly optimistic to assume that SSD vendors will properly sanitize the key store. Furthermore, there is no way to verify that erasure has occurred (e.g., by dismantling the drive).”

And that's even using drive encryption, at least with a HDD I can verify to a very high percentage that any data I wiped using one of the many secure wipe programs will indeed be unrecoverable to the general public.

I'll have to fully read the pdf but do they specifically mention any SSD controllers to either use or avoid?

Sorry, I know the random access will give the SSD the advantage over the HDD, I was just wondering if it was worth it in my case.

It's amazing, I was thinking of exactly the same thing re. the security of SSDs, a few months ago when there was a thread here about the merits of SSD for a new system.

I'm wasn't sure I was interested in going for SSD for my main system drive back then given the security concerns.  Now that they've been confirmed, I'm even less inclined.

After all a 150GB Velociraptor is the same price as a 64GB SSD and given that I don't have a pagefile, (which I wouldn't have with an SSD either), I'm wondering just how beneficial the SSD would be given I currently have a 50GB OS partition and the rest of the drive, (590GB), is given over to relatively infrequently accessed data.

Maybe I would be better off with a 'Raptor.
