well... so far in my experience Copernic comes closest. Note, though, that my wife is convinced that it is missing messages and files in scanning. I ditched it from my own computer about a year ago in deference to X1 and then to Archivarius. The tragedy of X1 is that it's *almost* perfect save the annoyances Carol and I have highlighted. I can't uderstand why they can't iron these wrinkles out... The other issue for me with X1 that I've not yet mentioned in this thread is that it is glacially slow in displaying previews and often hangs while trying to preview files. When it's on, nothing can beat it for functionality, though... Too bad it's "off" more often than "on", though.
4277
Yeah, just to chime in here, Ralf, I've never had that experience, either.

WRT X1, it does wreak havoc with Outlook in my experience. When I was running it on my notebook, setting the system to either hibernate or go into standby on shutting the lid (pretty standard for most people using notebooks) caused X1 to crash and recover if Outlook is minimized to tray. Unfortunately, while X1 would recover, it would break the connection between Outlook and my pst so I'd have to shutdown and restart Outlook. This happened EVERY time and persisted through several builds and betas, including the latest full release. This behaviour was replicable on three different notebooks running XP Home, XP Pro and Win2k (now deceased, sniff). I've not bothered trying version 6 but haven't seen anyone raving in the forums about how it has fixed the Outlook problems. Anyway, the point is that Outlook frequently had to scan and repair my pst after these crashes, so I can undertand why Carol might have been experiencing corrupt pst's when she was running X1.

I *know* that all I needed to do was either disable hibernate and standby on closing the lid of my notebook or make sure that exited Outlook before closing the lid, but too often I'd forget to close Outlook and I hate having to boot my system everytime I want to use it (yes, I am a product of my generation - instant gratification required!).
4278
What about Lookout? I've no idea if this will do what you need it to do or not... Just throwing it out there as it suggested itself to me when I read that you are interested primarily in indexing pst files and not other file types...

Hi Carol,

Archivarius is not perfect in its Outlook support. The author is aware of the problems and has mentioned to me that he intends to remedy the situation in the future. You could write to him to add to the volume of people complaining and perhaps rouse him to action.

This is what he said to me (and I hope it's OK to quote him):

Currently A3000 use OLE to access Outlook mailboxes. A3000 also support
direct access (via "Custom mails"), it is useful if PST file is not
connected to Outlook (e.g. just stored somewhere as backup).
But OLE access is slow and not good for latest version of Outlook. We should
switch to COM method (it is used in other search systems). We are planning
to switch in the future.

In the interim, I save my e-mails using MessageSave - this provides me with my e-mail in a format that Archivarius can index and search very quickly as well as a tertiary backup for my PST's...
4280
Anyone else who has updated to Archivarius 3.93 getting malware warnings about it from their AV? I'm using SpySweeper with AV, which uses Sophos under licence, and it identifies the Archivarius exe as a virus. I've reported this to Archivarius's author and am still trying to figure out how to report it to Sophos. I am confident that it is a false-positive, but wondered if I am alone or not!

General Software Discussion / Re: GemX - missing in action
« Last post by Darwin on October 13, 2007, 10:34 AM »
I agree with you, Sigh... I'm less angry with them than I am sad. Such potential, such a big mess and all of it easily avoided by having placed a short note on the homepage a couple of months ago. They also could/should have left the forums in place with a note that said something like: "The development team will be unable to participte in these forums while GemX does x,y,z. Please excuse our absence. During this period, which will be as brief as possible, we have a diverse, knowledgeable and friendly user base that is very active in this forum. Post requests for help in the appropriate thread and we are sure that someone will be able to help you. Please feel free to continue to post bug reports and feature requests as well and we will attend to them as soon as we can".

Anyway, to get to the point, I have mixed feelings about how to respond to your question. I *did* request and receive a refund for Do-Organizer but that was more about 1. getting GemX's attention (I think it worked) 2. getting a refund while I could in case the company disappeared. I still have a licence for TexNotes Pro (not installed at the moment, though) and *might* be wooed back to GemX under the scenario that you've outlined. There is certainly nothing wrong with their vision and ideas for their products - they just need to work on managing the various projects they have on the go and balancing that with customer service. Customers (well, me  ;)) will put up with a lot as long as they get the sense that their voice is heard and opinions/wants valued. I can't stress enough how simply GemX could have kept my $70 upgrade fee for Do-Organizer... I'd have accepted the bugginess and waited for fixes if they had simply communicated to its customer base, as outlined above.

So, at this point, I'd answer your question with a qualified "yes" - there's a small chance that I'd return to the fold. By this I mean actively using TexNotes Pro. Parting with cash for Do-Organizer would take more than that. For a start, in the immediate future, it would be nice, as the person who started this thread and as someone who has requested and received a refund (I'm betting that I am not alone), if they contacted me directly to express their sorrow that it came to this and attempted to reassure me about the future. I'd also like to hear that Doublewitt had been directly contacted as well... At this point, I think that at least some of their energy should be devoted to re-building a positive relationship with it's existing userbase. As Josh noted, many of us will be posting on other threads in other forums recounting our experiences. This negative "word of mouth" advertising is going to make it difficult to build up a new userbase, let alone recapture/retain its current one.

As an aside (and with apologies for waffling so much), I wonder what became of Chessnia and Chris Tonchev?. I know there were many others who were active on the forum, but those two stick out in my memory. I'd be curious about their reactions to all of this. Chessnia wrote the e-book on Chess... I wonder if I can find him? I'll give it a go.

EDIT: That was easy - message sent!

Yup - you're right! How'd I miss that? Thanks, Masu

Thanks masu - I've voted! I'm curious, though, I've never been able to figure out how to add a poll to a running thread  :-[ - how'd you do it?

General Software Discussion / Re: Question: Quickest way to receive spam?
« Last post by Darwin on October 13, 2007, 09:45 AM »
Yes - I should have made that clear in my post, too. Although I get a ton of spam on one of the two GMail accounts that I have, almost 100% of it winds up in the Spam folder and I never see (though I always check to make sure nothing was placed in there by mistake)!

Yes - I agree Doublewitt. They seemed to my mind to keep up quite well for quite a while. Jon and Peter seemed in general to take criticism and suggestions well and to keep up with the pace just fine. I went away for June and July and when I returned in August the forums were still open (just, as it turned out) but "no one was home". A week or so later and they were gone... Given the grammar and style of the latest news post, I wonder if Peter Brooks is still around? The writing doesn't have his stamp on it, which I found odd.

BC will be getting this in the next version 3 due out within the next 3 months or so.

This native is well beyond "restless" waiting for BC 3 to come out. It's been "just around the corner" since I bought my licence for BC2 over two years ago. I'm no longer holding my breath waiting for it to ship. One of the reasons I bought BC2 was that I was assured that I'd get the upgrade to BC3,which was due out by the end of the year (2005 - admittedly, they qualified this by saying that all licences give the licensee one year's free updates and upgrades), for free. Clearly this is not going to happen and I expect that to get the feature that originally drew me to BC3 in the first place - 3 way file comparison - will be added to the newly defined "Pro" version and that it will cost me a substantial sum of money to get it... Yes, I know - sour grapes. It's been a long frustrating day!

You know... I've a GMail account that gets NO SPAM, EVER. I've another that gets 100's of SPAM e-mails a week. Go figure. The spam free account is set up as a [email protected] account. The spam magnet is a [email protected] account... I wonder if there is a correlation?

Just an update: GOMPlayer CANNOT play QT or RP files natively... After reboot I was no longer able to play either and for now have reverted to the "Alternative" versions. Might try the KLite pack later...

The wiki idea keeps coming up... However, (and I have no first hand knowledge of this) it seems that there are significant cost and labour issues that would need to be sorted out. Mouser has mentioned Reviews 2.0 a number of times as being intended to address the issues being discussed in this thread. Can't wait to see what it looks like!

Once again, Carol has managed to articulate my feelings far better than I was able to do so myself (over the course of two posts!). Thanks, Carol - that's exactly what I was trying to say

No worries, srdiamond. I was pointing out that a review being two years out of date is not a great reason to be complaining about them. I probably went overboard in doing so  :-[ and I apologize (I should have added your name to mitzevos in qualifying what I was saying, not doing so was an oversight). You're absolutely right that inaccuracies in a review should be addressed, irrespective of how old the review might be. Now, if a feature is added or corrected subsequent to the review being posted, that's a different matter. While I feel that it is desireable that reviews be updated to reflect these changes, I accept that this is not always feasible/practical.

Yeah, I'd be all over that, too. Of course, <sob>, I trod on my Linux notebook and created a charming squid ink coloured Jackson Pollock effect on the monitor  >:(  :D Oh well, just have to buy a new one and dual boot my current one... It's only money, right? Please, PLEASE, tell my wife that?

General Software Discussion / Re: What does software 'maintenance' inlcude?
« Last post by Darwin on October 11, 2007, 05:15 PM »
In my experience:

1. It's a pretty common term.
2. The maintenance contracts I've purchased (Acronis, Diskeeper, Raxco) have included premium level support and free updates/upgrades during the term of the agreement. They've also been significantly cheaper than the cost of a single upgrade - less than 50% - so even if no upgrades come out in a given year I'm still saving money if I pay for two years of coverage and only get one upgrade. I realise that this is not what you're concerned about, but wanted to provide an end-user's experience/perception.
3. Speaking as an end-user I would expect that during the period covered by the agreement, all updates and upgrades would be provided free (unless very prominently and clearly stated otherwsie)
4.  Can't help you with the legal references. Sorry.

Can you imagine going to buy a Mini Cooper and the dealer spending 30 minutes telling you how terrible BMW's are?

Sorry, Zaine, I can't resist: Mini Coopers ARE BMW's! Admittedly, the Mini Cooper S of yesteryear was a Britsh Leyland product (Rule Britannia!), BMW bought out the parent company a few years back...

In fairness, the review date is prominently displayed, along with the date of the last update to the review, in the left hand pane of each review. The version numbers of the applications considered in the review are also displayed - what's the problem? Complaining about inaccurarcies in a two year old review is daft, in my opinion. This is not aimed at you, mitzevo (you're right about people complaining); I just don't understand why people keep complaining about the reviews when they are clearly out of date. This just smacks of intellectual laziness and is symptomatic of the culture of instant gratification that we live in...

In a perfect, utopian world the reviews would be updated to reflect point change releases and major upgrades of each app reviewed. In the real world, this is an unrealistic goal. They'll get updated when they get updated. Until then, it's clearly stated when the review was done, when it was last updated, and what versions of the apps were at when reviewd. Why complain, it's not like they're being passed off as cutting edge?

Don't worry, it had nothing to do with apple. Just a random tasteless video.

It was certainly tasteless. At first I thought it was going to be a clever satire of the Mac/PC war (Tostido vs. doughnut) but it proved intsead to be unoriginal, scatalogical, and not funny   stopped watching when the kid with the Tostido was cleaning the toilet with it...
