I'm on Windows 7 x64. The program opened up, but the photo screenshot that was currently displayed was not in Photo Resizer. It had the default, blank interface.

^^ Good post!

Oh, but wait...maybe that explains why the DOJ dragged their feet so much over releasing the sealed seizure warrant documents...

What was it that the 'J' in 'DOJ' stood for again...

The obvious answer...

Perhaps the thing we are most guilty of on this forum is beating meta discussions to death  ;D

I think this needs a discussion! :P

Yeah, well, before we go off on a discussion about that, shouldn't we at least try to figure out whether we need to have that discussion or not? :P

(With due chops to Renny!)
This is clearly the important part of that original photo.
I have cropped it with ScreenShotCaptor and Stickies, and uploaded it to Social Media site DonationCoder.

Got a big version for you here. ;)

Looks terrific.  Can we get a commandline invocation method where we can pass it a file path? If so a .sctool could be created for my Screenshot Captor tool, which would be nice.

mouser, I can't seem to get it to work properly. I've got this:

title = Photo Resizer
app = %ProgramFiles%\Photo Resizer\PhotoResizer.exe
params = "%file%"
iconfile =

In app, I used the full path initially (with quotes). Am I missing something?

I've actually been using it inside of Screenshot Captor already, simply through right-clicking on the image.

Yuppers. Already in there:

C:\Some\Path>"C:\Program Files (x86)\Photo Resizer\PhotoResizer.exe" "C:\Another\Path\SomePhoto.jpg"

i.e.

PhotoResizer.exe photo.jpg

BTW - Where is the info to create a .sctool? Just found it...

Usage
Installation
Run the installer. No special considerations.

Using the Application
The easiest and fastest way to use it is to right-click on a photo, then choose the Photo Resizer context menu item.

Keyboard shortcuts are available in the help file.

Otherwise, you only need to look at the application to know how to use it.

DEFAULT PHOTO SAVE FOLDER - ORIGINAL PHOTO FOLDER

*** Photos are saved by default to the same folder as the original photo, and renamed with an easy to identify name. This is customizable in the preferences (F4).

Uninstallation
Run the uninstaller through the Windows Control Panel.

Tips
Use the free license key here:

ZQSZ-7VE4-F3UE-ZPM7-DG99-A2UN-K4BA-8FY8-Y6CJ-UZS6-PQ5A-BR8U-C783-ND45-DRRM-RG54-7HC4-YQBE-QW56-QUX8-TGKL-6SJ3-BGQX-K54W-KTD8-2QCV-435M-ZYJU-9GM5-9J26-6793-C7G6

Press CTRL + L to enter the license key.

TO CROP FAST
1) Resize first.
2) Position the upper-left corner.
3) Resize the Photo Resizer window for the lower-right corner.

Known Issues
The help file isn't perfectly up to date. Some images are older, and some functionality isn't documented, but all the most important ones are.

Facebook albums prior to timeline are not in the dropdown menu. This will not be fixed. This is Facebook breaking their own API. New albums appear as would be expected.

NO OPEN CANDY
Previously I received some fairly extreme criticism for having Open Candy in the installer of the last version. This version DOES NOT have Open Candy in the installer. However, to be perfectly clear, that decision had nothing to do with previous criticism.

Living Room / Your Smart Device Predictions?
« Last post by Renegade on November 18, 2012, 08:46 PM »
Looks like we've got a barrage of new smart devices coming our way, including TVs and cameras and cars.

Anyone have any ideas what they think will be coming out next? i.e. Devices with a more complex OS, and not just microcontrollers (MCUs).

I'm tending to think that the next generation of smart devices will shift from the personal device area to home appliances, e.g. washing machines, refrigerators, stoves/ovens, atmosphere control (air conditioners, central heating, etc.), etc.

I really have no 'evidence' for that, but just a gut feeling. I think it's still a few years away yet.

Thoughts?

On a more serious note, for the people in the US: it's about time to grab your torches, pitchforks and semi-automatics and overthrow your government the corporations.

Hmm... IIRC it's now illegal, under US law, for us to post a statement like that online... :tellme:

For what reason? Is it torches, pitchforks, or semi-automatics that have been patented? :P ;D

I suppose that I shouldn't be very surprised at people's reactions. I'm in the same camp for using Wikipedia as a springboard to start looking into something, or for a quick reference on a factoid that I know exists, but am not sure exactly what it is.

My answer was "it depends".

I've found some of the lists that have been compiled to be useful on occasion.

+1

I love the lists. They really simplify finding things, especially when you don't know what you're looking for. They don't even need to be objective, because you can just go off and find whatever you're looking for elsewhere. Well, if they're included in the list.

While reading an article in Wikipedia, I saw a "Good" article rating, and then following that link, found that they also have "Featured" articles.

Good: https://en.wikipedia...ipedia:Good_articles
Featured: https://en.wikipedia...ia:Featured_articles

I ran down the list of featured ones, and looking in on one (not at random), saw what appeared to be complete bunk. I couldn't help but think that Wikipedia has become nothing more than a shill. The Talk page was terrible. The editors simply ignored any contributions and basically just told people to buzz off. Typical sanctimonious blathering about "WP:RS" and whatnot, all the while never presenting a single reliable source themselves. And this is a "Featured" article? Huh?

I suppose that for things like mathematics and most areas of physics, I've got a high amount of confidence in Wikipedia, but for anything historical or political or even in a lot of areas of science (mostly the softer ones like medicine), I pretty much have zero faith anymore. Pretty much anywhere that there's a possible vested interest, I really don't have much faith.

FWIW - I like the idea of "Good" and "Featured" articles. Too bad that some really poor ones make it in there as it really diminishes the value of them by throwing others, that very well could be excellent, under suspicion.

Well, after looking into serializing controls in .NET, looks like a custom class is needed as the default controls are not marked as serializable. Not sure what that means for Delphi, but it is one thing to consider. i.e. Can the object be serialized?

There's quite a bit of information out there on serialization.

https://duckduckgo.c...+a+control+in+delphi

I don't know enough about Delphi specifically, but... the principles are pretty general.

If you have 2 objects there, I'd probably just create an:

object[2]

Then fill it like:

object[0] = obj1;
object[1] = obj2;

Then serialize that. It's very simple and uncomplicated, but certainly doesn't allow for changing "file formats" later on. Something like "filename.<version>.<extension>" could help solve that problem easily though. Not the neatest solution, but workable and certainly a lot less work than creating a customized file format.

However, looking at your code, you've got an array in there, so it might be just as easy to create an XML file with something like this:

Code: Text [Select]
  1. <Grid>
  2.   <rows count="2">
  3.     <row position="1">
  4.       <col position="1">
  5.         <data>blue</data>
  6.       </col>
  7.       <col position="2">
  8.         <data>red</data>
  9.       </col>
  10.     </row>
  11.     <row position="2">
  12.       <col position="1">
  13.         <data>green</data>
  14.       </col>
  15.     </row>
  16.   </rows>
  17. </Grid>

Or something like that. There are many ways, and that's just one very simple example. Not a very good one though... Just illustrating... The point is that you can create the entire grid in XML and pretty much do whatever you want. However, it is more complex than doing simple binary serialization. The good news is that there are lots of XML libraries to help out. :)

I like XML as it is very simple to use, and if designed right, is nicely compatible going forwards or backwards.

Supposedly, it's "first to file" and prior art doesn't matter. Not too sure on the details there as it's really just all complete insanity, and it's not really worth my time to figure out just *how* insane it all is.  :-\

Good article.

The proof really is in the pudding. 50 (or whatever you like) years ago the average family lived comfortably on 1 income. Today, families struggle on 2 incomes.

This is progress? This isn't a fixed/broken/corrupt/twisted/evil system?

Sadly, when trying to explain to some people about the mechanisms at work, people get angry at you for trying to help them. It's not as bad now as before, but still, there is a lot of resistance from people - they seem to prefer living in ignorance of the things that really do matter to them and that affect their lives in fundamental ways.

The measure of wealth of a society is how well its PEOPLE are doing, not its CORPORATIONS.

From the article:

SP: How could laws and rules have been written this way, and why wouldn’t people notice it all happening? Was it a gradual shift or a more recent trend?

DCJ: Amendment by regulation by rule, one step at a time over many years, corporate lobbyists rewrote the rules. Had they done it all in one big bill we would have noticed. But who pays attention to when two words are changed in subsection q or Section 6108 of some federal or state statute. But some of this was done in the open and no journalists reported on it and no politician had an interest in pointing it out. So five states have taken away your legal right since 1913 to telephone service and put in rules that can literally mean you can only get cell telephone service. Worse, 19 states let corporations pocket the state income taxes withheld from their workers’ paychecks — you read that right, 2,700 big companies in 19 states get to keep the state income taxes of their employees. The best part, from the companies’ point of view, is they don’t have to tell the workers. All of the shift I identify in THE FINE PRINT began in either the 1980s or later, meaning when we abandoned the New Deal for Reaganism, which both parties now embrace.

The "totalitarian tiptoe" in action.

While perhaps a bit messy, you may be able to simply grab the object and serialize it to disk, then open it, cast it to the right type, and assign it back. Not sure how you're working things there, but does it make sense for what you need to do?

Living Room / Patent on Turning Pages

Yes. You read that right. Turning pages has now been patented! Make certain to pay your royalties to Apple. :P

VIA:
http://www.techdirt....t-page-turning.shtml

ARTICLE:
http://bits.blogs.ny...-owns-the-page-turn/

If you want to know just how broken the patent system is, just look at patent D670,713, filed by Apple and approved this week by the United States Patent Office.

This design patent, titled, “Display screen or portion thereof with animated graphical user interface,” gives Apple the exclusive rights to the page turn in an e-reader application.

Yes, that’s right. Apple now owns the page turn. You know, as when you turn a page with your hand. An “interface” that has been around for hundreds of years in physical form. I swear I’ve seen similar animation in Disney or Warner Brothers cartoons.

(This is where readers are probably checking the URL of this article to make sure it’s The New York Times and not The Onion.)

 :o

Dunno. That just leaves me completely speechless...

It really is the kind of thing you'd see at The Onion. He nails it there.

The problem with plastic is that it can include toxins, like bisphenol A, which is linked to cancer and all kinds of nastiness. It gets worse though... While many manufacturers have eliminated it, they have replaced it with bisphenol S.

20 years ago, nobody really knew about the problems, but more recently, research has been published on it.

Well ewemoa, I have to say thanks for prompting me about the plastic issue.
So I'm retiring this kettle after many years of reliable service and moving on to stainless steel.

See if you can find a glass one. They're quite attractive, and probably even safer than metal.
