N.A.N.Y. 2017 / Re: Donating Prizes for NANY 2017?
« Last post by mouser on November 17, 2016, 04:08 PM »
I figure these would be purely optional bonus little prizes.. so no one entering in NANY will be able to expect anything..  So if someone wants to offer up a prize it may be that no one will want it, and it may be that for cost reasons it can only be shipped within the same country.  They would just be some extras that might be available to spice things up.  Mugs (or tshirts) will go out to everyone who enters as normal.

N.A.N.Y. 2017 / Donating Prizes for NANY 2017?
« Last post by mouser on November 17, 2016, 10:05 AM »
I was thinking maybe we could have members donate some prizes to be given away to NANY 2017 coders.

I have a few older laptops that are in ok condition and are still quite usable that I could donate.  And possibly an android tablet or two.

Donors of prizes would choose who to give their prizes to, and donors would pay shipping costs (so it will cost you a bit to donate a gift!).

Thoughts?

It also offers visual embellishments such as borders and shadows, and automatic file naming. It offers easy watermarking, integration with image editing apps and Windows Explorer integration, and its microscopic system requirements mean you can leave it running all the time without worrying about a negative effect on your PC’s performance.. it’s much more useful than anything Windows itself offers.

I don't think anything has changed on the forum end of things for the last year.  What did it used to show? What url are you using for the feed -- there are lots of different urls that can be used on the forum to show threads, posts, etc.

You are correct, I will make it so that either alt button works in launching items with that option.

Developer's Corner / Blog Essay: H.264 is Magic
« Last post by mouser on November 11, 2016, 10:20 AM »
Nice long blog post about a ubiquitous video compression algorithm.

"H.264 is Magic"

H.264 is a video compression codec standard. It is ubiquitous - internet video, Blu-ray, phones, security cameras, drones, everything. Everything uses H.264 now.

H.264 is a remarkable piece of technology. It is the result of 30+ years of work with one single goal: To reduce the bandwidth required for transmission of full-motion video.

Technically, it is very interesting. This post will give insight into some of the details at a high level - I hope to not bore you too much with the intricacies. Also note that many of the concepts explained here apply to video compression in general, and not just H.264.

Living Room / 24hrs of live board game playing streamed by my favorite players
« Last post by mouser on November 05, 2016, 05:45 AM »
One of my favorite youtube board game channel is a group called "Game Night".  They are a bunch of nerds from board game geek (bgg) that do full playthroughs of board games.

They are going to play 24hrs of board games today (November 5) (noon GMT -8, 2pm forum time?) and stream it live.  Might be worth checking out:

Living Room / Re: computer not recognizing scanner

Well if it has a win10 driver then it should work, i wouldn't give up on it yet.  try another cable would be the first thing.

Now one technique that has worked in the past with usb devices is to connect it, go to device manager (show hidden devices), then find the entry for it, and DELETE the entry.  then remove and replug and let it find the driver again.  this can fix a problem where the wrong driver was associated with the scanner.

I don't think it's likely that the devices are bad.. but i believe i did have a good epson scanner that epson simply decided they didnt want to support anymore, and i could never get it recognized under win7/win10 because there was no updated driver for it.  there may be a generic solution to such cases but i never found one.

That's a pretty compelling argument.. Let me try to add it.
4292
It takes about 5 months to make a newsletter.

That's 4 months and 29 days of waking up and telling myself today will be the day I do it, and then one day of actually doing it.

The bulk of the work is in opening up every new thread since the last newsletter (which amounts to maybe 80 a month) and making a quick decision about whether it belongs in the newsletter.  So the longer I go between them the more daunting the task.  I've written some scripts to show me the new threads since the last newsletter, but it's still mostly a manual task of cutting and pasting links into the newsletter section where I think it belongs.  And then there is just a lot of little small tasks I need to do to send it to new members and to the mailing lists, update blog, forum settings, etc.

It's not actually a *lot* of work, but it is a bit tiring.
4293
The \n is a newline character -- a carriage return.
4294
ok i see the bug, will be fixed in next version. sorry for the confusion!
4295
hmm that's odd! looks like i need to figure out why it's showing in mine but not in yours.
4296
I see an option to "Delete all visible items", but not one to reset the values on them to 0.

You should see higher up "Reset all visible items"

I'd rather type a value to add to the score

You're right -- don't know what i was thinking.  Click on the number to show a little calculator screen where you can add any amount to the score (or subtract or reset) makes a lot of sense.  i will add it.
4297
And I too would like a feature that would reset all values within a group back to 0, so you can start again, without affecting current counts in a different group.

already implemented.  youll find reset option in menu.

What about making it less tedious for games that are not scored in very small increments?

yeah, i was thinking about this.. not sure the best way to handle it.. maybe an option to have additional buttons?  OR maybe better would be if you click on the actual score value, you get a popup dialog where you can quickly tap +5, +10, +25, +50, +100, RESET?  That would be easy to add.
4298
With nearly 20 years in web development, I know my stuff -- Mouser will vouch for me.

I can definitely vouch for allen's skill and speed.  You couldn't go wrong hiring him.

The portable version does not need to be installed in and of itself, but it still requires the WinPCap library to be installed.  That library is included in the portable download.
